Ever since Kitagawa Gen had gotten his "exclusive" Byakugan, he had yet to find a chance to use it in actual combat.
This was a good opportunity. Kakashi had been drawn away by Obito Uchiha, and Guy had to deal with Hidan. Neither of them was close.
But to make sure nothing went wrong, he still covered his entire body with Purple Lightning, making his Byakugan less obvious.

Using the Eight Gates Release Formation was partly to test how high his limit was, and partly to accelerate.
