First Appearance Chapter 1

Background / History

Kakashi leaves Anbu to lead a newly formed squad. His first day goes disastrously when two students are hospitalized after infighting, leaving Kitagawa Gen as the sole remaining member. Though discouraged, Kakashi defends Gen before Hiruzen Sarutobi, emphasizing the boy's concern for comrades and the village; Hiruzen permits the team to continue and encourages Kakashi to begin a new chapter outside Anbu. 1 3

He becomes Gen's primary mentor after recognizing his extraordinary aptitude for ninjutsu, swordsmanship, and Lightning Release. Kakashi compensates for Gen's lack of field experience by taking him on missions and training him directly, even as Gen's rapid progress repeatedly exceeds his expectations. 5 8 44

Kakashi visits Obito Uchiha and Rin Nohara's graves and tells Gen about his former teammates. Obito's reappearance as an enemy forces Kakashi to confront the possibility that his presumed-dead comrade survived and was responsible for catastrophic attacks on Konoha. Kakashi resolves to investigate Obito and stop him rather than be paralyzed by the past. 7 24 29 53
