Background / History

Obito initially monitors Kakashi after learning that his former teammate survived an encounter with Itachi Uchiha. He becomes interested in Kakashi’s student, Kitagawa Gen, after hearing that Gen protected Kakashi and forced Itachi’s group to retreat. White Zetsu’s remarks about Kakashi’s changed fortune visibly affect him 14.

While secretly observing Gen outside a Konoha izakaya, Obito decides to test him both out of curiosity and as a warning to Itachi. He frames the test as a means of obtaining information on Sasuke and enforcing Itachi’s agreement not to interfere with Konoha 20.

Gen discovers Obito during the attempt and identifies the link between Obito’s right Sharingan and Kakashi’s left Sharingan. Obito is forced to retreat after Gen exploits his Kamui, damages his mask, and exposes enough clues to threaten his false identity as “Uchiha Madara” 22 23 24.

Obito later admits that Rin’s death drove him away from Konoha. He concludes that reviving her would only expose her to further tragedy, and commits himself instead to creating a new world through the Infinite Tsukuyomi/Eye of the Moon Plan, where Rin can exist forever 53 54 26.

Personality

Obito is deeply fixated on creating a world free of tragedy, particularly tragedies resembling Rin’s death. This conviction allows him to justify manipulation, mass violence, and the destabilization of entire villages as necessary steps toward the Eye of the Moon Plan 26 45.
