Background / History

Hiruzen was one of Senju Tobirama’s five foremost Ninja Academy disciples alongside Shimura Danzō, Mitokado Homura, Utatane Koharu, and Fu Ino-Shika-Cho. He and Danzō trained and grew together as rivals and friends, though Hiruzen’s mastery of all five elemental transformations left Danzō unable to match him directly. 176

When Tobirama stayed behind to cover the retreat during the First Shinobi World War, Hiruzen was selected as the Third Hokage. His succession was tied in part to his strong circle of disciples, including Tsunade, Orochimaru, and Jiraiya. 74 176

As Hokage, Hiruzen maintained Konoha’s balance among the clans and was regarded as impartial in civilian affairs. Hyuga Ningyuan’s Medical Training

Hiruzen recognizes Ningyuan’s unusual genjutsu aptitude and agrees to support his placement at Konoha Hospital to study Medical Ninjutsu. He privately investigates Hyuga chakra traits through Konoha’s archive of clan techniques, discovering the conventional conclusion that Hyuga chakra is unsuited to genjutsu. 37

He later gives Ningyuan Konoha-Style Swordsmanship rather than further medical support. Ningyuan interprets this as an attempt to direct his growth into a less threatening path. 58 66

Monitoring Ningyuan and Kurenai

When Ningyuan and Yūhi Kurenai begin accepting paid dance performances, Hiruzen first disapproves, then recognizes their potential influence and profitability. He assigns an Anbu operative to monitor them on weekends. 99

Minato’s Rise

After losing contact with Shinnosuke and numerous Sarutobi Clan jonin in the Land of Rain, Hiruzen assumes Hanzō is responsible and seeks retaliation. He sends further investigation teams, including Ino-Shika-Cho and Aburame operatives, all of whom disappear. 179

Hiruzen calls a clan-head meeting to support war against the Land of Rain, but Kakashi’s open refusal prompts the other clan heads to withdraw their support. Once calm, Hiruzen abandons the attack rather than risk Konoha’s military position and moral standing. 180 181

Downfall and Death

The reformed Security Bureau exposes embezzlement within the Mission Management Office, including Sarutobi Clan members. Hiruzen publicly expresses shame and hints at resignation as his authority weakens. 190

After Orochimaru’s agricultural research gains public and clan support, Hiruzen’s attempt to accuse him over the disappearance of nine thousand people fails. He resigns as Hokage amid a corruption scandal involving himself and four other officials. 193 194

Uchiha Nanato later arrests Hiruzen for corruption and embezzlement. Abandoned by Koharu and Homura, Hiruzen makes a final stand against Nanato, Tsunade, Hatake Sakumo, Orochimaru, and Ningyuan. 198 199

Hiruzen battles Uchiha Nanato’s Susanoo with his Golden Staff and an extensive arsenal of ninjutsu, but cannot breach Susanoo’s defense. Nanato catches him in genjutsu and impales him through the chest, killing him. 200
