Background / History

At age twenty-four, Abner became the eleventh head of the Winifred Family and a foremost magecraft specialist at the Clock Tower. Despite those credentials, he serves only as a junior lecturer because he is Lord El-Melloi II's disciple; magi associated with El-Melloi II face institutional obstruction following their teacher's dismantling of the Greater Grail. 2

Abner inherited El-Melloi II's belief that a magus's level is determined by combat experience rather than bloodline alone. He applies this philosophy to his own teaching, encouraging flexible thinking, scientific methods, and efficient combat applications rather than rigid adherence to traditional magecraft. 7

Initially skeptical of the Sixth Holy Grail War because the Greater Grail had supposedly been dismantled before his birth, Abner begins investigating after Command Spells appear on his hand. His lack of information about the War unsettles him more than the danger itself. 2

He enters the War intending to reach the Root, but treats investigating the War's impossible resumption as a higher priority than winning the Grail. 73 190 He summons Leonidas using a Thermopylae memorial inscription and the Winifred Family's magical crest, choosing a defensive Servant so he can engage opposing Masters directly with magecraft. 20

Appearance

Abner is a pale, blond European man with sea-blue eyes and a refined bearing. He is usually portrayed as composed and well dressed, though Surtr's flames leave him severely burned and force him into a simple shirt and bandages. 144 240

  • Sandy-gold or blond hair, often falling across his face. 144 232
  • Sea-blue eyes. 144 240
  • Pale complexion; his dark-blue Magic Circuits become visible when he releases significant power. 240
  • Normally wears white gloves and can conceal his mercury defense as clothing. 2 148
  • Sustains extensive burns and Magic Circuit damage during the conflict with Surtr. 240 272

Personality

Abner combines the pride of a young family head with unusually cautious, analytical habits. He prefers preparation, terrain control, and calculated engagements over gambling on raw power; even his conspicuous public appearance with Leonidas is a deliberate attempt to lure enemies into a prepared defensive position. 34 57

Although regarded as an eccentric within mage society, he is gentle, socially perceptive, and careful with others' dignity. He adapts his speech to Leonidas's dislike of being treated as a subordinate, framing their alliance as a joint pursuit of victory rather than issuing imperious orders. 21

His morality distinguishes him from many magi. Abner voluntarily draws hostile attention away from Tohsaka Mina, worries about her safety, and prioritizes eliminating Fenrir and its Master after learning of their indiscriminate violence. 34 95 This decency can coexist with ruthless pragmatism: he uses mind control to interrogate Tsukahara Meiji, though he later removes it and attempts to guide his student rather than simply exploit him. 194

Abilities & Skills

Water-Attribute Magecraft

Abner possesses exceptional water-attribute magical energy and specializes in precise manipulation of fluids. His control extends to freezing water, shaping ice, redirecting attacks, and exploiting moisture in the environment. 2 49

  • Forms ice plains, spears, blades, axes, barriers, and traps. 35 153 156
  • Can freeze individual leaves into concealed projectiles with high precision. 241
  • Uses water nets to arrest a falling Artoria's momentum. 244
  • Creates layered ice mirrors to redirect Artoria's Noble Phantasm away from civilians. 245
  • His strongest large-scale applications require a suitable water source. 240

Mercury Mystic Code

Abner developed a mercury-based Mystic Code by integrating the theories of Lord Kischur Zelretch and the El-Melloi lineage's mercury armaments. Mercury's dual qualities as metal and fluid allow it to serve as both armor and weapon. 49 133

  • Normally forms inconspicuous protective clothing around his body. 148
  • Generates mercury barriers, spears, cones, and a layered Mercury Suit. 152 155 206
  • Defends against sniper fire through successive mercury barriers. 152
  • Countered Hicks's magic-nullifying Blood Sword by relying on mercury's physical properties after its magical manipulation was canceled, causing the sword to break. 155
  • Was destroyed by Surtr's demonic flames. 240

Composite Magecraft and Magic Optimization

As a lecturer in Magecraft Engineering Optimization, Abner can connect multiple magic circles into composite spells. His optimized three-section formula can produce effects comparable to a five-section incantation. 133

  • Activates multiple barriers of different attributes with extreme speed. 154
  • Uses large-scale composite circles to launch ice-spear barrages. 152
  • Can combine defensive, mobility, and offensive spells in immediate succession. 154
  • Complex composite defenses sacrifice the strength of each individual layer. 154

Flowing Workshop and Ice Castle

Abner's principal fortress is an Ice Castle built around flowing water. It converts the river's potential energy into magical energy through a colossal Mana Reactor, allowing the structure to continuously repair itself while supplying him with power. 190

  • Controls the castle's layout, walls, floors, passages, and traps. 169
  • Can force intruders through maze-like routes while tracking their positions from within the structure. 202 206
  • Reconstructs damaged sections as long as the water source continues flowing. 190
  • Supports Leonidas by creating and replacing ice weapons during battle. 201 202
  • Must divide his focus between maintaining the fortress, defending himself, protecting others, and supporting his Servant. 202

Forest Workshop

Abner can expand the principles of his Flowing Workshop to vegetation, using the water and life force within plants as a magical energy source. 240

  • Converted an entire forest into an ice-based workshop. 240
  • Replenished Artoria's Magic Power through the workshop's energy supply. 240
  • Used the terrain to counter Matou Aya's insect magecraft. 241 242
  • The technique severely strains his already damaged body and Magic Circuits. 272

Physical Combat

Despite primarily being a magus, Abner has boxing training and uses reinforcement magecraft to protect his wrists and body during close combat. 61

  • Employs practical footwork, including boxer-style retreat steps. 148
  • Retains trained jab combinations and fighting muscle memory. 61
  • Does not possess the physical abilities of a Servant and relies on magecraft, positioning, and guardianship against stronger opponents. 156

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Winifred Family magical crest — Used alongside his catalyst to summon Leonidas. 20
  • Thermopylae stone tablet — Catalyst bearing the commemorative inscription for the Spartan dead. 20

  • Leonidas — First Servant and closest wartime partner. Their initially strained compatibility becomes deep trust, with Abner supporting Leonidas's battles and carrying on his courage after Leonidas's death. 21 201 233
  • Artoria Pendragon — Later Saber contracted through a special summoning circle; Abner supports her with his workshop, Dragon Vein connection, and tactical planning. 234 243 244
  • Tohsaka Mina — Allied Master whom Abner repeatedly tries to protect, including by drawing enemy attention onto himself. 34 95
  • Tohsaka Rin — Ally who trusts Abner with Mina's safety and lends him a gem communicator. 73 192
  • Tsukahara Meiji — Student and later captive. Abner treats him with concern, protects him during the Ice Castle assault, and tries to make him reconsider Karl's influence. 190 194 196
  • Tohsaka Shirou — Initially an enemy due to misunderstandings over Mina; later an ally who helps Abner summon Artoria. 158 232 233
  • Matou Aya — Hostile Master whose insect magecraft and intentions toward Mina disgust Abner. 237 240
  • Karl — Enemy whose theft of the Winsted Family's Magic Circuits angers Abner; Karl participates in the assault on the Ice Castle. 206
  • Hicks — Holy Church Agent who attacks Abner with the Blood Sword; Abner breaks the weapon through his mercury defense. 154 155

Story Role / Major Arcs

Sixth Holy Grail War participation

After gaining Command Spells, Abner investigates the inexplicable return of a Holy Grail War that should have ended with the Greater Grail's dismantlement. He summons Leonidas and establishes a strategy centered on defensive workshops, scouting, and defeating enemy Masters through magecraft. 2 20

Public declaration and Ice Castle defense

Unable to keep Leonidas concealed, Abner deliberately publicizes their presence to draw enemies toward his workshop. He constructs disposable and permanent Ice Castle defenses, uses decoys, and turns his apparent exposure into a controlled battlefield. 34 40

Protection of Mina and conflict with rival Masters

Abner protects Mina from external factions and confronts Tsukahara Meiji, Hicks, and Shirou amid competing attempts to take her. He defeats Hicks's Blood Sword through an unconventional mercury-based countermeasure, but his conflict with Shirou begins from a mistaken assumption. 149 152 155 158

Ice Castle siege

After capturing Meiji, Abner uses the Ice Castle to shelter him and prepare for the wider conflict. Karl and Elena infiltrate the fortress while Leonidas battles Fenrir; Abner maintains the castle, arms Leonidas with disposable ice weapons, and attempts to protect both his Servant and student. 190 201 206

Surtr's attack and Leonidas's loss

Surtr's appearance overwhelms the battlefield. Abner supports Leonidas until his Magic Power nearly runs out, then accepts Leonidas's determination to face the threat. The experience leaves Abner badly injured and determined to continue fighting in memory of his first Servant. 210 233

Alliance with Shirou and Artoria

After reconciling with Shirou, Abner concludes that the Holy Grail itself does not exist and that the War is being powered by another source, likely the Imperial Seal of China. Together, they summon Artoria through a special circle that separates magical supply from Command Spell authority. 232 233 234

Forest Workshop battle

With his Mystic Code destroyed and burns still limiting him, Abner confronts Matou Aya by turning the forest into a Flowing Workshop. He coordinates with Shirou and Artoria through communication and terrain control, but the exertion worsens his physical condition. 240 242 272
