Background / History

Lu Bu manifests as Rider after being summoned by Tohsaka Mina, immediately identifying himself as “peerless under heaven.” His summoning in China grants him an exceptional Fame Bonus: widespread recognition of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms version of Lu Bu corrects his manifestation toward the legendary “foremost fierce general of the Three Kingdoms.” 22 41

The Servant is explicitly based on the fictionalized Lu Bu of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, rather than a certain historical truth. This interpretation retains his famed martial valor alongside lust for women, wine, and riches; a readiness to place profit over righteousness; and a reputation for betrayal. 66

Initially bound to Mina, Lu Bu repeatedly tests the limits of their Master–Servant relationship. He considers provoking her into wasting a Command Spell, remains with her only provisionally, and later plans to abandon her if a more advantageous Master becomes available. 76 119 162 Nevertheless, he intermittently protects Mina, including rescuing her from thugs and declining to pursue Loxia when Mina’s safety becomes a concern. 83 134

After Mina uses her final Command Spell against him, Lu Bu resists it through Tiger Wolf Owl General A and accepts Matou Aya’s offer to change sides. 231 Under Aya’s stronger magical supply, he can more fully wield abilities that Mina’s weak magecraft had left unavailable, including Dynasty Warriors A. 237 238

Appearance

Lu Bu is an exceptionally tall, powerfully built Han Dynasty warrior whose ordinary facial features contrast with an unmistakably arrogant, battle-hardened presence. When mounted on Red Hare, the pair stand nearly four meters tall. 41

  • Black hair secured by a purple-gold crown. 41
  • Sharp brows and an untamed, condescending gaze. 41
  • Ornate beast-head armor, steel bracers, and a crimson battle robe or cape. 22 40
  • Wields the crescent-bladed Fangtian Halberd. 40
  • Emits overflowing crimson Magic Power, particularly when enhanced by Red Hare. 41 237

Personality

Lu Bu is proud, combative, and exhilarated by worthy opponents. He openly seeks one-on-one fights, considers powerful enemies achievements to add to his record, and develops mutual respect with warriors such as Leonidas despite their repeated clashes. 41 42 44

His tactical ability is strongest in immediate combat. He rapidly adapts to weapon disarms, terrain, mounted maneuvers, and an opponent’s attack patterns. However, he lacks long-term vision, often focuses only on his own intended actions rather than his enemy’s plans, and repeatedly underestimates foes such as Leonidas and Loxia. 43 47 126

Though opportunistic and willing to betray Masters for sufficient benefit, Lu Bu holds genuine regard for his mounts—especially Red Hare. Injury to Red Hare provokes intense fury, and he refuses to abandon even a motorcycle during a race because he views it as a Rider’s partner. 106 118

Abilities & Skills

Fame Bonus

Lu Bu’s manifestation is heavily strengthened by being summoned in China, where his Three Kingdoms legend is universally recognized. 41

  • Raises his base parameters from Strength B, Endurance A, and Agility B to Strength A, Endurance A+, and Agility A. 46
  • Reinforces the popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms image of Lu Bu as an unmatched warrior. 41
  • Does not remove his reliance on Red Hare for peak combat capability. 46

Among Men, Lu Bu; Among Horses, Red Hare

Lu Bu’s Self-Enhancement Noble Phantasm is the perfect union between himself and Red Hare, rather than the horse alone. While mounted, all of his abilities receive a major enhancement without sacrificing his rationality. 42 46

  • Raises Strength, Endurance, and Agility to A+++ while mounted in China. 46
  • Grants a combat increase described as superior to Berserker-class Mad Enhancement while preserving tactical thought and refined riding technique. 46
  • Requires Lu Bu to remain mounted; dismounting removes the corrective enhancement and sharply reduces his effectiveness against elite opponents. 45 46
  • Enables seamless dual pressure: Lu Bu attacks while Red Hare independently positions him for optimal offense. 160
  • Provides abundant residual Magic Power after his parameters reach their enhancement limit. 238

Dynasty Warriors A

A combat-intuition skill unavailable under Mina’s inadequate magical supply but usable after Lu Bu gains Aya as Master. 238

  • Provides an exceptionally strong instinct similar to precognition. 238
  • Identifies and executes the most appropriate attack method based on an opponent’s weapons and openings. 238
  • Unlike Artoria’s Instinct, it is offensive rather than a comprehensive defensive ability. 238
  • Allows him to target Artoria’s weaknesses while berserk. 270

Tiger Wolf Owl General A

A hidden skill born from Lu Bu’s repeated betrayals in life. 231

  • Allows him to resist a Command Spell when he has decided to betray his Master. 231
  • Is automatically concealed from Masters at Rank A; Mina did not know it existed. 231
  • Let him reinterpret and break free from Mina’s unspecific command to “Stop.” 231

Mounted Combat and Riding

Lu Bu is an elite Rider whose horsemanship and mounted weapon techniques are considered his greatest martial specialty. 41 112

  • Uses Red Hare’s mobility for hit-and-run assaults, feints, charges, and attacks from unexpected angles. 45 110 271
  • Keeps pace with a high-end motorcycle on a mid-tier used bike through superior route selection, cornering, and throttle control. 106
  • Can control a motorcycle hands-free while cornering and materialize his halberd mid-ride. 106
  • Is notably weaker in foot combat, as the Fangtian Halberd’s long shaft is optimized for mounted fighting. 124

Martial Arts and Weapon Mastery

Lu Bu is proficient with more than his signature halberd and can transition between weapons and styles during combat. 40 204

  • Uses deliberate weapon releases to disrupt enemies attempting to disarm him. 43 205
  • Employs bracers, punches, kicks, and grappling alongside halberd techniques. 43
  • Wields dual projected swords with formidable swordsmanship when separated from the Fangtian Halberd. 204 205
  • Possesses exceptional archery, famously capable of striking a small branch of a halberd with one arrow. 203
  • Can evade firearm attacks and traps through combat instincts and rapid movement. 134

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Fangtian Halberd — Lu Bu’s signature crescent-bladed mounted weapon; can be materialized or dematerialized and thrown like a javelin. 40 125 205
  • Red Hare — His crimson warhorse and Noble Phantasm partner. 42 46
  • Armor and bracers — Ornate beast-head armor and steel bracers used defensively in close combat. 22 43
  • Dual projected swords — Weapons projected by Shirou and wielded by Lu Bu during his battle with Leonidas. 204

Relationships

  • Red Hare — Beloved warhorse, Noble Phantasm, and inseparable combat partner; Lu Bu is fiercely protective of it. 42 118
  • Tohsaka Mina — Original Master. Their relationship is strained by Lu Bu’s insubordination and self-interest, though he sometimes protects her; he ultimately betrays her. 76 134 231
  • Matou Aya — Later Master and ally. Lu Bu joins her after resisting Mina’s Command Spell, seeking stronger magical support and a more advantageous partnership. 231 237
  • Leonidas — Recurrent rival and respected opponent. Their battles test Lu Bu’s mounted supremacy against Leonidas’s resilience and tactical adaptability. 41 47 111
  • Loxia — Archer opponent whose traps, firearms, and evasive tactics frustrate Lu Bu; her injury to Red Hare intensifies his hostility. 118 126 134
  • Artoria — Saber opponent. Lu Bu recognizes her strength and fights her through high-speed mounted maneuvers, eventually retreating from her Noble Phantasm. 238 245

Story Role / Major Arcs

Battle with Leonidas

Lu Bu meets Leonidas in China and challenges him to battle, initially exploiting his superior mounted speed to wound him. 41 Their prolonged confrontation becomes a contest of terrain, weapon control, endurance, and mutual adaptation. Lu Bu remounts Red Hare to regain his full Noble Phantasm enhancement, but Leonidas repeatedly punishes his overconfidence. 46 47 111

Conflict with Loxia

After Red Hare is injured, Lu Bu relentlessly hunts Loxia through the forest. 118 Without his mount’s enhancement, he struggles against her traps and unconventional firearms, suffers major Magic Power loss from a machine-gun shot, and eventually abandons pursuit due to concern for Mina. 124 126 134

Defection to Matou Aya

Lu Bu privately plans to exploit Mina’s death or survival for a more beneficial arrangement, but later intervenes to aid Mina and Shirou against Leonidas when circumstances demand it. 162 Mina’s final Command Spell gives him the opening to invoke Tiger Wolf Owl General A, resist her authority, and ally himself with Aya. 231

Battle with Artoria

With Aya’s magical supply allowing greater access to his capabilities, Lu Bu faces Artoria while mounted on Red Hare. 237 238 He uses his Noble Phantasm, mounted mobility, and offensive intuition to pressure Saber, but retreats after Aya spends a Command Spell to save him from the Sword of Promised Victory and Abner bluffs him into withdrawing. 243 245

Berserk Rampage

Insects invade Lu Bu’s body while he is ordered to destroy a workshop, causing him to lose consciousness and rampage as a Berserker. 269 He devastates the city with Red Hare and his halberd, fights Artoria through streets and across buildings, and retains enough martial instinct to exploit her blind spots and disorient her with circular mounted movement. 270 271

Trivia

  • Lu Bu’s ordinary appearance is contrasted with his overwhelming presence; the text notes that historical records do not describe him as unusually handsome. 41
  • His breath-like exhalations are actually overflowing mana; Servants do not need to breathe. 41
  • He considers a motorcycle a “partner” in the same sense as a mount. 106
  • Despite his reputation for betrayal, Lu Bu’s attachment to Red Hare is portrayed as sincere and unusually steadfast. 118
