Background / History

Elena was created by the Einzbern family as an exceptional homunculus model. Unlike standard Einzbern homunculi, which were modeled after the Winter Saint and intended as Holy Grail vessels, Elena was altered to carry Emiya Kiritsugu’s personality, ideology, physical conditioning, and training. The Einzberns regarded her as a substitute upon which to vent their hatred of Kiritsugu after the Greater Grail’s destruction. They denied her the Einzbern surname, calling her “Emiya-Elena” instead. 8 99

Before becoming a Master, Elena was confined within the Einzbern castle and subjected to repeated physical and magical abuse. Her scars—whip marks, cuts, burns, and scalds—remained even after magical treatment. She later saw other failed Kiritsugu substitutes stored like broken dolls, understanding that failure would leave her among them. 8 102 178

When Command Spells appeared on her hand, the Einzberns deployed her in the Sixth Holy Grail War with Berserker, Fenrir. Her orders were to secure the Holy Grail; should victory become impossible, she was to use Berserker to destroy the war rather than allow another faction to win. 8 101 171

Elena initially defined herself entirely through Kiritsugu’s name and the family’s accusations against him. Her need to know why he “betrayed” the Einzberns became her personal reason for seeking the Grail, eventually developing into an identity crisis when Karl Winsted claimed to be Kiritsugu’s true successor. 102 167 168

Appearance

Elena resembles the Einzbern homunculi: an otherworldly, doll-like young woman with silver-white hair and ruby-red eyes. She commonly dyes her hair black and conceals her eyes behind dark goggles to avoid being identified as an Einzbern artificial human. 98 99 104

  • Her body is extensively scarred from torture, including whip, blade, burn, and scald wounds. 8 102
  • Her right hand is unusually large and strong for her frame. 8
  • She often wears a white leather outfit over a red vest, with weapons concealed beneath it. 8 104
  • Her signature white scarf is woven from artificial-human hair and serves as both armor and magical medium. 8 114
  • When operating in public, she uses temporary black hair dye, crimson windproof goggles, and a motorcycle outfit to obscure her features. 104

Personality

Elena was raised to be a compliant weapon. Early in the war, she follows Einzbern orders with little outward emotion, treats her own body like a machine requiring inspection, and prioritizes efficiency, preparation, and intelligence gathering. 8 101

Beneath this controlled exterior, Elena possesses empathy that conflicts with her intended role. She patiently washes and grooms Fenrir despite knowing a Servant does not need such care; doing so gives her comfort and fulfills a personal desire to care for another being. 99 102 178

Her fixation on Emiya Kiritsugu is both her central motivation and greatest vulnerability. She struggles to distinguish her own identity from the personality imposed upon her, becoming distressed when Karl’s connection to Kiritsugu challenges her belief that she herself is Kiritsugu. 102 168 178

  • Methodical and cautious; she evaluates threats, maintains weapons, and fortifies her residences. 101 103 166
  • Pragmatic in combat, favoring surprise attacks, firearms, traps, and retreat over honorable confrontation. 103 170
  • Capable of playfulness, including crudely editing Matou Aya’s photograph and stubbornly following instant-noodle instructions to the second. 101 178
  • Inexperienced in independent life despite her extensive combat conditioning; Karl notes that inherited knowledge is not the same as practical experience. 178

Abilities & Skills

Einzbern Alchemy and Magic Threads

Elena channels Magic Power through silver-white artificial-human hair, primarily her scarf and strands taken from similar homunculi. The threads can become hard as steel wire while remaining flexible, allowing them to function as concealed weapons, armor, sensors, and tools. 114 115 129

  • Creates nearly invisible wire traps capable of severing a rushing opponent. 115
  • Forms shields, nets, barriers, wind blades, drills, and cutting whips. 120 129 174
  • Uses threads to sense enemy positions through sound and heat, even through walls. 173
  • Animates thread-based Familiars, including a sparrow for reconnaissance and a snake for misdirection. 101 127
  • Can manipulate concealed weapons beneath her clothing, including remotely pulling a pistol trigger. 170
  • Her threads lose much of their stealth advantage once opponents know they exist. 179
  • Corrosive venom can dissolve her thread constructs. 183

Pseudo-Origin Bullet

By infusing cut hair with reinforcement magic and firing it from a shotgun, Elena creates a spiraling, drill-like projectile. It is designed to bore through magical barriers in an imitation of Emiya Kiritsugu’s Origin Bullet. 120

  • Combines a hair drill with shotgun pellets to breach defenses and devastate the exposed target. 120
  • Wraps bullets in sharpened threads to increase penetration and cutting force against magical barriers. 170
  • Successfully pierces a barrier made from vengeful spirits and kills a green-clad Mage’s Association representative with a shot to the heart. 170
  • It does not possess the true Origin Bullet’s ability to destroy Magic Circuits. 120

Enhanced Homunculus Physique

The Einzberns repeatedly modified Elena into a combat weapon, giving her physical abilities near the human limit. Her arm strength, reflexes, training, and operational mindset were made closely comparable to Kiritsugu’s. 99 107 174

  • Uses enhanced strength and agility to contend with Karl Winsted in close quarters. 115 121
  • Rides a motorcycle at extreme speed through unfamiliar terrain by using a Familiar’s Empathic Vision to see the route ahead. 107
  • Can move and flee at speeds far beyond ordinary humans. 174
  • Her body remains vulnerable to sustained magical-energy overload. 133 203 218

Firearms and Assassination Tactics

Elena is proficient with both magecraft and conventional weapons, adopting an assassination doctrine centered on reconnaissance, information control, ambushes, and targeting Masters rather than Servants. 101 103 140

  • Maintains her own firearms and ammunition to prevent jams, barrel damage, and accuracy loss. 103
  • Uses Familiars and attendance data from the Clock Tower to identify potential Masters. 101
  • Employs disguises, hidden weapons, false negotiations, mines, smoke screens, and escape routes. 104 170 171
  • Failed to kill Matou Aya with a sniper shot, but learned that Aya was Assassin’s Master and possessed an abnormal survival ability. 103
  • Defeated Karl in their first extended duel by using a flashbang, thread defenses, and a thread-wrapped blade to capture and disarm him. 130 131

Master of Fenrir

Elena is Fenrir’s Master and supplies the Berserker with Magic Power through her Command Spells and circuits. She freed Fenrir from the chains used in his summoning, earning its gratitude and loyalty. 99 102

  • Can summon Fenrir and direct its combat deployment. 102
  • Uses chains, including a Concept Lock, to restrain Fenrir and forcibly dismiss its Spirit Form. 186 187
  • Fenrir’s Mad Enhancement EX makes it uncontrollable once fully berserk. 176
  • Berserker’s immense Magic Power consumption repeatedly drains Elena, leaving her unable to properly fight or use her thread magecraft. 99 133
  • Continued use ultimately turns Elena into a channel for Fenrir’s Magic Power, eroding her body beyond magical healing. 218

Story Role / Major Arcs

Einzbern Deployment

Elena receives the Einzberns’ order to win the Holy Grail War or destroy it, enters the conflict as Fenrir’s Master, and begins operating as an assassin in Qianxi. She disguises herself, builds arms caches, investigates prospective Masters, and prioritizes killing Masters over confronting Servants. 8 101 104

Conflict with Karl Winsted

After tracking Rider, Elena encounters Karl in the forest. Their conflict escalates from a simultaneous pistol exchange into a prolonged contest of reinforced bodies, firearms, blades, traps, and thread magecraft. Elena gains the advantage with a flashbang and captures Karl, but releases him because she needs answers about Kiritsugu. 114 115 120 131

Alliance and Pursuit by Velvica

Karl presents an Origin Bullet and claims Kiritsugu’s legacy, destabilizing Elena’s sense of self. She accepts an alliance to infiltrate Abner’s temple and rescue Tsukahara Meiji in exchange for Kiritsugu-related information, the Origin Bullet, and Command Spells. 168 169

Elena kills a Mage’s Association representative through a disguised Pseudo-Origin Bullet attack, then fights alongside Karl against Velvica. They coordinate their traps and attacks effectively, but are forced to destroy one of Elena’s bases and flee when Velvica’s Growth Magic proves too difficult for Elena’s threads to overcome. 170 171 173 174

Fenrir’s Burden and Death

During later fighting, Elena must use the Concept Lock to bind Fenrir and draw Magic Power from him. The burden of sustaining a divine Berserker overwhelms her modified body, transforming her into a channel for Magic Power rather than blood. The resulting magical-energy erosion cannot be healed with magecraft, and Elena dies. 187 203 218

Trivia

  • Elena prefers instant noodles despite the Einzbern family’s wealth and the availability of better food. 100 177
  • She follows instant-noodle instructions exactly, timing the required 180 seconds down to the second. 178
  • She briefly edits Matou Aya’s profile photo into a crude purple-haired, red-lipped image before undoing most of it. 101
  • Grooming Fenrir’s fur is not practically necessary for a Servant, but Elena finds the act personally calming and meaningful. 99 178
