Background
Leonidas was the King of Sparta and its strongest warrior. At Thermopylae, he led 300 Spartan soldiers and other allied troops against Persia rather than submit to Xerxes, who offered him rule over Greece in exchange for surrender. Leonidas fought for the freedom of Sparta and Greece, refusing to become a ruler under Persian control. 20 59
When the Persian army attacked Thermopylae from both sides, Leonidas dismissed the allied forces so they could survive and fight later battles. He ordered his injured companion Dithys to retreat and carry word of the Spartans’ stand back to Greece, despite the disgrace that command would bring. 161 211
He was summoned by Abner through a catalyst connected to Thermopylae and the Winifred family crest. Although their initial compatibility was poor, Leonidas accepted their contract: Abner would provide power, while Leonidas would repay him with his shield, sword, and spear. 20 21
Leonidas ultimately confronted the Demon God Surtr to prevent him from reaching Abner and the surrounding people. Abner used a Command Spell and all of his available magical power to let Leonidas deploy his Noble Phantasm, summoning two Spartan companions to support the charge. Leonidas was killed by Surtr’s flaming sword, but later rose once more to strike Surtr before sacrificing himself. 210 211 212
Appearance
Leonidas manifests as a towering, heavily muscled young man with tanned skin, a clean-shaven face, and the physique of a warrior in his physical prime. 21 35
- Around two meters tall. 37 144
- Has a sturdy, masculine face and tiger-like eyes. 20 35
- Wears golden Spartan armor, a crimson cape, helmet, and large round shield marked with Sparta’s inverted-V emblem. 21 212
- Fights with a dark-blue spear, shield, and sword. 21
- His build is repeatedly compared to steel or a living war machine rather than ordinary human musculature. 35
Personality
Leonidas values freedom above titles, hierarchy, and personal comfort. He rejects being called “King” or “Lancer,” insisting that he is simply Leonidas and that neither he nor others should be treated as slaves. His belief in freedom extends beyond Sparta: he argues that free people have no right to interfere with the choices of other free people. 20 21 61
He initially despises mysticism and resists relying on magecraft, even when magical reinforcement would improve his odds of victory. Nevertheless, he honors his agreement with Abner and gradually comes to respect both Abner’s wisdom and his support as a Master. 21 145 154 210
Despite his appearance and love of direct battle, Leonidas is a disciplined commander and tactician rather than a simple brute. He reads terrain, adapts to opponents, recognizes when retreat is necessary for a larger victory, and can set aside a duel to fulfill his duty as a guardian. 35 45 161 199
- Fiercely proud, stubborn, and competitive. 35 61
- Enthusiastic about worthy opponents and glorious battle. 40 123
- Calm under pressure; does not let anger override battlefield judgment. 35
- Harsh toward enemies, but consistent in applying his principles. 61
- Willing to die when duty requires someone to hold the line. 210 212
Abilities & Skills
Spartan Martial Arts
Leonidas is an elite close-quarters fighter whose strength, speed, endurance, and combat experience make him exceptionally dangerous in direct engagements. He was Sparta’s greatest warrior and combines refined weapon technique with overwhelming physical force. 37 44
- Uses spear techniques beyond simple thrusts, including chopping, slicing, lifting, sweeping, and close-range strikes. 122
- Employs his shield offensively through throws, shield bashes, crushing charges, and improvised attacks. 39 122
- Can react to and counter ambushes, substitution techniques, and fast-moving opponents. 37 39
- Uses terrain strategically, including shattering ice to restrict mounted movement and exploiting Abner’s traps. 45 199
- Can fight unarmed or improvise with objects such as stones, trees, ice weapons, and enemy equipment. 132 133 150 201
Battle Continuation A+
Leonidas can continue fighting after sustaining otherwise fatal injuries. This ability originates from his refusal to stop fighting until complete death at Thermopylae. 48
- Can remain active for more than five minutes after receiving a fatal blow. 48
- Survived having his heart pierced long enough for Abner to heal him with a Command Spell. 47 48
- Allows him to remain a threat while severely injured or impaled. 159 208
- Does not prevent injury or eliminate the need for magical healing afterward. 47 49
Unleashing the Spartan Spirit / Unyielding Will
Leonidas gains power in death-match conditions, particularly when injured, surrounded, ambushed, or facing desperate odds. The ability reflects his three-day last stand at Thermopylae. 38 109
- Activates when he is in dire straits or senses a hidden danger of being surrounded. 38 109
- In extreme death-match conditions, his parameters can reach EX rank except for Magic and Luck. 38 48
- Lets him ignore pain and continue fighting through severe wounds, including a broken arm. 38
- Makes him especially dangerous against enemies who expect injuries to slow him down. 150
Will of Sparta
Leonidas possesses a Noble Phantasm associated with the resolve of the Three Hundred Spartans who marched to Thermopylae knowing they would die for their homeland and the freedom of their people. 48 191
- Requires an immense supply of magical power from his Master to activate fully. 210
- With Abner’s Command Spell and magical power, summoned two Spartan warriors equipped with shields, spears, armor, and crimson cloaks. 210 211
- The summoned warriors acted as a protective phalanx, using their bodies and shields to create an opening for Leonidas to attack Surtr. 211
- Abner could only sustain two summoned companions before the burden nearly destroyed his body. 210 211
Equipment
- Spartan spear — Leonidas’s primary weapon; capable of harming Servants, though not itself a Noble Phantasm. 21 144
- Golden great shield — A heavy Spartan shield used for full-body defense, bashing, throwing, and charging. 21 122 144
- Sword — A secondary weapon manifested alongside his spear and shield. 21 144
- Golden armor and helmet — Defensive equipment that can be damaged and repaired by Abner’s magecraft. 144
- Crimson cape — A defining part of his Spartan appearance. 21 212
Relationships
- Abner — Master and eventually trusted companion. Their relationship begins with tension over Leonidas’s hatred of servitude and mysticism, but develops into mutual respect, battlefield coordination, and willingness to sacrifice for one another. 21 47 154 206 210
- Dithys — Close friend and loyal Spartan companion. Leonidas ordered the injured Dithys to retreat from Thermopylae so that Sparta’s story and will could endure. 161 211
- Lu Bu — Rival Servant and fellow direct-combat warrior. Their battles are marked by mutual respect, tactical adaptation, and repeated attempts to outmaneuver one another. 42 45 205 208
- Fenrir — Berserker opponent whose primal ferocity challenges Leonidas’s refined martial skill. Their repeated battles push Leonidas to fight barehanded, improvise, and reconsider his ideas of glory. 122 123 132 201
- Surtr — Demon God and Leonidas’s final opponent. Leonidas confronts him despite knowing the battle is likely unwinnable, prioritizing the defense of free people over survival. 210 211 212
Story Role / Major Arcs
Summoning and Early Holy Grail War
Abner summons Leonidas as his Servant, but their relationship begins poorly because Leonidas refuses the implications of being called a “Servant.” Abner avoids using Command Spells to force obedience and instead establishes an equal-footed agreement with him. 21
Leonidas accompanies Abner in public to draw hostile Masters toward their workshop. During this period, the pair watch a film about Thermopylae; Leonidas critiques its inaccuracies and demonstrates a strategic understanding of warfare. 34 35
Battles with Hattori Hanzo and Lu Bu
Leonidas protects Abner from Hattori Hanzo’s assassination attempt, disarming the Assassin and blocking shuriken intended for his Master. When badly injured, he activates his death-match power and overwhelms Hanzo through sheer endurance and aggression. 37 38 39
He later fights Lu Bu across an ice field. Leonidas uses the environment in a manner reminiscent of Thermopylae, breaking the ice to limit Red Hare’s mobility and force Lu Bu into less favorable routes. 42 45 47
Battles with Fenrir
Leonidas fights Fenrir in several intense engagements, contrasting his deliberate spear-and-shield techniques with Fenrir’s instinctive ferocity. Fenrir destroys his shield more than once, forcing Leonidas to rely on his spear, fists, trees, ice weapons, and Abner’s support. 122 124 132 133 201
Although he becomes absorbed in the thrill of battle, Leonidas ultimately prioritizes guarding Abner’s Ice Castle over pursuing a duel. He intercepts intruders and confronts Elena and Karl after using Fenrir’s charge and Abner’s traps to move through the castle. 197 199
Defense of the Ice Castle and Final Battle
During the Ice Castle conflict, Leonidas withstands attacks from Fenrir and Lu Bu while injured, buying time for Abner. He reaches the height of his power in a desperate state, mauls Fenrir, bends Lu Bu’s halberd, and drives the Rider back. 204 205 206 208
When Surtr approaches, Leonidas chooses to stand and defend rather than flee. Abner uses a Command Spell to support the activation of Leonidas’s Noble Phantasm, allowing two Spartan companions to join his doomed assault. Leonidas dies fighting Surtr, then returns briefly to deliver a final blow before sacrificing himself. 210 211 212
Notable Quotes
“Spartans are free men in life, and free men in death. You will never ‘enslave’ me, the leader of free men—Magus.” 20
“I am merely a warrior; I have no need for such empty titles.” 21
“This time... I won't fail this expectation again.” 109
“I am not here because I can win. I am here because I must stand here.” 210
Trivia
- Leonidas dislikes being addressed as either “King” or “Lancer,” preferring simply “Leonidas.” 21
- He has a large appetite and encouraged Abner to eat more meat to become stronger. 60
- At a modern gym, he defeated every challenger in running, push-ups, squats, and strength contests; he used a barbell like a war hammer. 61
- His standard spear, shield, sword, and armor are not Noble Phantasms, making them comparatively straightforward for Abner to repair with magecraft. 144
- He considers Abner something like a blacksmith because Abner repeatedly repairs his damaged arms and armor. 144
