| Affiliation | Clock Tower under his assumed identity; Mage's Association assassin program, Camp X 6 275 298. |
| Occupation/Role | Assassin, Reinforcement specialist, and Master of Caster Da Vinci in the Sixth Holy Grail War 27 115 275. |
| Claimed Position | Sole survivor and head of the Winsted family; later exposed as an impostor 7 163 184. |
| Magical Affinity | Spiral, capable of producing a tenfold amplification through intertwined magical power 249. |
| Status | Alive after completing his revenge against Matou Zouken and Matou Aya's possessed body 268. |
| First Appearance | Intervenes in Tsukahara Meiji's bullying at the Clock Tower 6. |
Power Progression
Karl's documented development consists of equipment upgrades and increasingly dangerous Reinforcement techniques, rather than named cultivation realms.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Reinforced close-combat style | 13 14 | Reinforces muscles, bones, and skin through his Mystic Code. His punches threaten Assassin, although he cannot reliably follow the Servant's movements. |
| Da Vinci's upgraded gauntlets | 27 28 | Optimized circuits amplify his magic to approximately three times its usual power. A test punch dents a doorway through wind pressure alone, with an estimated output comparable to B-rank Strength; the strain makes full output a trump card. |
| “Chronos Manipulation — Double Speed” | 114 115 | Demonstrates doubled physical performance to evade a bullet and close on Elena. This is Reinforcement, not genuine time manipulation. |
| “Chronos Manipulation — Triple Speed” | 128 130 | Overloads his body and nervous system to escape Elena's ambush. Prolonged use produces mounting fatigue. |
| “Quadruple Speed” | 174 176 | Uses a forbidden level of acceleration during Velvica's pursuit. Even fourfold speed cannot outrun the heat of a nearby explosion. |
| “Double Helix” | 176 | Reveals another reserved trump card while escaping his own grenade's explosion; survives with severe injuries. |
| Fivefold visual and reflex Reinforcement | 182 | Separately enhances visual nerves and reflexes while moving at triple speed to intercept wind blades. Fivefold output is sustainable only for an instant and leaves him temporarily blind and unable to control his body. |
| Command Spell-powered “Spiral” | 184 249 | Uses two Command Spells to fuel a spiral attack that penetrates Velvica's defenses and kills her. His right hand is severely injured; the later explanation establishes the technique's tenfold amplification and the gauntlets' protective role. |
Background / History
Camp X
Before adopting the name Karl, he was X, a trainee in the Mage's Association's attempt to produce assassins modeled on Emiya Kiritsugu. The program operated twenty-six camps, designated A through Z, with the intended survivor taking the camp's designation as a codename 275.
Training combined extreme physical conditioning, unarmed and dagger combat, magecraft, and survival trials. After two years of basic training, the children received transplanted Magic Circuits and sharpened hunting knives before their first jungle trial. A later trial required half the trainees to die 275.
X met Matou Aya during this period. She admired his speed and skill, but he initially remained cold and dismissed her attempts to converse. Their education eventually included extensive material on Kiritsugu and his methods 278 292.
Escape and Employment
X and a companion killed the camp instructors and escaped together. He later justified the action by pointing out that the instruction “One of us must die” had not excluded killing the instructor. The Association regarded this interpretation as evidence of the flexibility expected of an assassin 298.
Another camp survivor, L, intercepted him during his escape. Subsequently, an Association magus offered X a choice between working as an assassin and death. X accepted employment; the same interview questioned his involvement in the Winsted family's destruction 296 298.
The Winsted Identity
Karl publicly presented himself as the sole survivor of a prosperous, seven-generation German magical family destroyed two years earlier. His stated ambition was to rebuild the Winsted lineage 7.
Under that identity, he discovered Tsukahara Meiji's magical talent while Meiji was performing street card tricks in Japan. He introduced Meiji to magecraft and became his benefactor and close friend 7.
The identity was later exposed as false. Abner identified inconsistencies in Karl's name and detected strong mental suggestion affecting Meiji. Karl's own thoughts subsequently confirmed that he was an impostor, and his European appearance was revealed to be a magical disguise 163 184 214.
Appearance
- Assumed appearance: A handsome, model-like European man with blond hair, sea-blue eyes, fair skin, almond-shaped eyes, and a habitually furrowed brow 7 27.
- True appearance: An ordinary-looking Eastern face and dark hair with a slight blue tint, revealed when his facial disguise melts away 214.
- Physique: Years of training give him well-proportioned, explosive muscles specialized for offense 130 172.
- Hands: Calluses at the thumb webbing and index-finger pads betray longstanding experience gripping weapons and pulling triggers 28.
- Clothing: Favors practical attire, including a white trench coat over a custom azure-and-indigo magical outfit, and black coats for covert movement 9 165.
- Signs of overuse: Extended Reinforcement leaves him with dull skin and hair, sunken eyes, dark circles, and pronounced exhaustion 140.
Personality
Karl is meticulous, cautious, and intensely pragmatic. He prepares concealment before sensitive conversations, investigates summoning conditions, and prefers securing an advantage before entering combat. He treats pride and dignity as expendable: he is willing to flatter, submit, or disparage his own profession if doing so helps him win 7 12 182.
His apparent acceptance of Meiji despite a weak magical lineage distinguishes him from the Clock Tower's elitists, but his helpful exterior conceals manipulation. He exploits Elena's dependence on the Kiritsugu identity and uses mental suggestion on Meiji. Nevertheless, his determination to recover Meiji is unusually urgent, even when it requires surrendering valuable resources or accepting elimination from the war 7 163 168 207.
His composure is not absolute. Defeat by Elena frustrates him, and her ambush briefly induces panic before his rehearsed activation phrase restores his response. In his earlier life as X, he also admits that he dislikes dying and finds combat boring 128 131 298.
Da Vinci's enthusiasm unsettles him. Karl recognizes the happiness of someone devoted to a purpose, while struggling to find a comparable certainty in himself 135.
Abilities & Skills
Reinforcement Magecraft
Karl's principal combat magic strengthens his body and nervous system, allowing a human assassin to threaten Servants under suitable conditions 13 14 249.
- Reinforces muscles, bones, and skin for powerful strikes and improved durability 13.
- Enhances speed, perception, and reflexes independently or together 115 182.
- Reinforces external defenses, including Elena's thread shield against Leonidas's spear 200.
- Cannot compensate indefinitely for the body's structural limits or technical shortcomings 172.
- Prolonged use overheats his circuits and exhausts his body; excessive nerve enhancement risks blindness and paralysis 115 140 182.
“Chronos Manipulation”
Despite its name, Karl's technique does not control time. It reproduces the visible effect of Kiritsugu's acceleration through physical Reinforcement 115 131.
- Double and triple speed improve movement and reaction time in assassination combat 114 128.
- Faster mental processing makes surrounding movements appear slower to him 128 176.
- Enhanced sensitivity also magnifies pain perception 115.
- Triple-speed processing accumulates fatigue at triple the rate 140.
- Quadruple speed is barely maintainable; fivefold nerve enhancement is limited to an instant 182.
Spiral Affinity
Spiral intertwines two sources of magical power so that they suppress and reinforce one another. Releasing the compressed power produces an attack ten times its original strength 249.
- Uses Command Spells as an external source of power rather than solely as orders to a Servant 184 249.
- Penetrates Velvica's Jörmungandr defense and kills her 184.
- Supports another decisive attack against Assassin 249.
- Would ordinarily destroy Karl's arm; Da Vinci's gauntlets act as a buffer, but do not prevent severe injury 184 249.
Assassination and Weapons Training
His training follows Kiritsugu's principle of attacking an opponent through the field they are least equipped to counter: science against magecraft, or magecraft against science 275.
- Skilled with pistols, daggers, grenades, stealth, and attacks aimed at vital points 115 121 127.
- Uses camouflage and concealment to evade observation and approach targets 26 115.
- Employs Muay Thai punches, knee strikes, footwork, and evasions in reinforced close combat 14 172.
- Muay Thai also conceals his deeper specialization in firearms and blades, which Da Vinci deduces from his calluses 28.
- Eventually prioritizes killing Masters instead of confronting their Servants directly 249.
Utility Magecraft
- Healing: Treats his shoulder wounds during the Assassin encounter and heals Meiji after his own rescue 14 19.
- Sound concealment: Inscribes runes on doorframes and erects soundproof barriers for confidential discussions 7 56.
- Concealment rituals: Helps hide Da Vinci's warehouse workshop from ordinary observation 27.
- Charm Magic: Controls stray dogs to engineer an attack intended to provoke an official crackdown on them 26.
- Mental suggestion: Alters Meiji's perception and loyalty; Abner identifies the interference, and Karl's manipulation is later exposed 163 196 207.
- Appearance disguise: Maintains the blond, European appearance associated with his stolen identity 214.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Custom magical outfit — Azure clothing edged in indigo, worn beneath his trench coat and designed to maximize his magical performance 9.
- Original bracers/gauntlets — His second Mystic Code, inscribed with enhancement and anti-magic incantations for rushing enemy magi through their spellcasting 12 13.
- Da Vinci's gauntlets — Custom-fitted mechanical Mystic Codes combining magecraft and electrical science. Amplify Reinforcement, deploy defensive barriers, and counter Elena's cutting threads 27 28 120 129.
- Spirit-body dagger — A retractable blade built into the gauntlet, modified through Da Vinci's analysis of his own spiritual body to harm Servants 28.
- Firearms and grenades — His concealed specialties and recurring tools in assassination battles 115 127 268.
- Origin Bullet — A single-use trump card made from Emiya Kiritsugu's bone dust. Its severing-and-connecting effect disrupts magical circuits; Karl reserves it for his Matou target and eventually uses it against Zouken 135 168 268.
- Command Spells — Expended as fuel for Spiral attacks. Elena also transfers her Command Spells to him before dying 184 249.
- Leonidas's short sword — Retrieved after the battlefield encounter and delivered to Da Vinci for analysis toward a stronger Servant weapon 131 135.
Relationships
- Tsukahara Meiji — Friend, magical pupil, and ally. Karl introduces him to magecraft, protects him at the Clock Tower, and supplies power to Loxia through him. Their relationship breaks down when Meiji learns of Karl's mental manipulation and asks to leave the war 6 7 140 207.
- Da Vinci — Karl's Caster Servant. Helps save his life, develops his gauntlets and anti-spirit weapons, and uncovers his concealed combat specialization. Karl's initial disappointment gives way to respect for his inventiveness 18 19 27 28.
- Loxia / Archer / Robin Hood — Meiji's Servant and Karl's uneasy ally. Distrusts his closeness to her Master and refuses to accept his assurances at face value, but cooperates in intelligence gathering and battle planning 23 53 54 56 207.
- Elena — Rival assassin turned transactional ally. Initially defeats him; later agrees to help rescue Meiji in exchange for Kiritsugu-related information, the Origin Bullet, and Command Spells. Entrusts her remaining Command Spells to him before her death 131 168 169 249.
- Matou Aya — Fellow trainee and central target of his Holy Grail War plans. His final confrontation with her possessed body is framed as both revenge and an act showing affection toward her 278 168 268.
- Emiya Kiritsugu — The model for Karl's training and assassination methods, not his confirmed personal mentor. Karl invokes his name and techniques while bargaining with Elena 115 168 275 292.
- Abner Fergus Winifred — Enemy Master who exposes his false identity and influence over Meiji. Karl allies with Elena to infiltrate Abner's castle and recover his captive friend 163 168 206 207.
- Velvica — Assassin magus who pursues Karl and Elena. Karl exploits her pride and ultimately kills her with a Command Spell-powered Spiral attack 172 174 182 184.
- L — Another survivor of the Association's training camps. Intercepts X during his escape and obstructs him during the subsequent Association interview 296 298.
