He values strength above rules. When Fu Ming challenges the Fate Crane Sect's order, Old Man Fate Crane dismisses the importance of rules and claims that true supremacy belongs to the strongest 164. He is calculating rather than impulsive: he studies Yang An's unusual body, considers preserving his soul for trade, and later decides Yang An is useful as a tool for probing the Earth Celestial Method Stele 56 148 150.

The Crane Head embodies his more openly cruel and ravenous side. It delights in insults, bloodshed, and watching disciples fight, frequently mocks the human head, and presses for victims to devour 28 29 161. Their meeting establishes the contrast between his two heads: the human head retains the actual authority, while the Crane Head relentlessly insults Mother Diviner despite her status and hospitality 28 29.

He discovers that Yang An has impersonated one of his disciples after learning the Fate Crane Sect's Lighting Method. Rather than immediately killing him, Old Man Fate Crane accepts Yang An as his thirteenth disciple, gives him the Flesh-Buried Talisman, and has the Crane Head provide him with a cultivation method 31 34. He later reveals his own Stiff God Realm cultivation and allows Yang An access to the Earth Celestial Method Stele through the sect's resources 35.
