Background / History

Gong Niang’s original body was the young mistress and Sect Master’s daughter of the Southern Dipper Heavenly Sect. During the Five Great Heavenly Sects’ contingency involving the Twelve Instruments of the Imperial Kui, her soul was divided: most was refined into a replica of the Wei Dang Xie Arrow, while the smaller remaining portion was forged into the bow that became Gong Niang. The artifacts were intended to suppress Kui, also known as Miao Ye. 328 412

As a separated remnant soul, Gong Niang drifted to the Western Regions and was discovered by Forbidden Calamity. He brought her to Great Virtue Temple and confined her in the Immeasurable Prison, where demons repeatedly killed and regenerated her. The torment awakened her independent sentience, formed her forceful personality, and gave rise to her ability to devour souls. 329 330 333

Forbidden Calamity eventually sealed her memories and transferred her to Zhe Han, the Workshop Master of the Jade Lang Artifact Forging Workshop, as payment for forging a difficult magic artifact. Zhe Han later gave Gong Niang’s bow to the younger Yang An. 332 333

After Gong Niang sacrificed her accumulated souls to save Yang An, her weakened condition activated Forbidden Calamity’s hidden technique. Yang An entered her consciousness domain to awaken her, witnessing her past and helping her confront the trauma of the Immeasurable Prison. She recovered after receiving a Ghost Dao Realm soul and regained much of her sealed memory. 317 327 333

Gong Niang ordinarily exists as a longbow carried by Yang An. Her bow form has a small grimacing ghost face on its grip; it was initially black and fanged, though its luster later began shifting toward pure white. 189
