Background / History
Ace entered the Grand Line as the captain and overwhelming main combatant of the Spade Pirates. His crew's combat ability lagged far behind his own, leaving him to protect them in most dangerous encounters. Even before mastering Haki, his physical strength and Flame-Flame Fruit placed immense pressure on Yota. 12 14 22
He recruits Yota after bringing the ill Deuce to Drum Kingdom for treatment. Ace recognizes Yota's fighting ability, medical skill, and Munch-Munch Fruit as assets too valuable to overlook. 13 14
Ace initially sails to prove himself and surpass his father, but repeated encounters with New World powers force him to recognize the gap between himself and the Four Emperors. Whitebeard's paternal treatment and the Moby Dick's family-like atmosphere eventually lead Ace and the Spade Pirates to join the Whitebeard Pirates. 40 44 46
Appearance
Ace first appears as a bare-chested young man in a hat who can condense from a mass of flame into human form. 12
- Wears a hat. 12
- Commonly manifests flames around his hands, feet, and body in combat. 19 37
- Later receives fingerless gloves marked with a sun pattern. 147
Personality
Ace is bold, impulsive, and intensely confident in his own strength. He repeatedly seeks out overwhelmingly powerful opponents—including Kaido, King, Jinbe, and Whitebeard—rather than avoiding them. 24 34 40 41
Despite this recklessness, he is protective of his crew and takes his role as captain seriously. Yamato's strength initially pressures him because he believes the captain should remain the crew's shield, motivating him to train rather than rely on his crewmates for protection. 31 32
He is compassionate toward people in need. He warms Deuce when the New World's cold nearly freezes him, befriends Tama in Amigasa Village, and has Yota heal Jinbe after defeating him. 22 25 40
Abilities & Skills
Flame-Flame Fruit
Ace's original Logia Devil Fruit allows him to create, control, and transform into fire.
- Elementalizes to avoid physical attacks and reforms his body from flames. 12
- Can block naval cannon fire and unleash attacks such as Fire Fist and Divine Fire: Shiranui. 15 37
- Uses flames to warm allies, including Deuce during the New World's sudden freeze. 22
- Developed palm-based flame propulsion for sustained aerial flight and high-speed maneuvering. 37
- His flames are disadvantaged against large quantities of seawater and were dispersed while facing Whitebeard's tsunami. 41
Haki
Ace develops all three major forms of Haki through battle and training.
- Learns Observation Haki after Yota introduces him to the concept. 19
- Awakens Armament Haki after fighting Vice Admirals who can strike Logia users. 22
- Uses Conqueror's Haki to incapacitate hostile villagers in Wano. 24
- Learns Conqueror's Haki Infusion and uses it against Kaido after Yota's final attack. 161
Fused Magma-Magma and Stone-Stone Fruit
Yota later replaces Ace's original fruit with a fused Devil Fruit combining Magma-Magma and Stone-Stone abilities. 282
- Produces magma with greater raw power than his former flames. 282
- Manipulates rocks directly and turns them into magma. 282
- Creates super-sized magma golems. 282
Close-Quarters Combat
Ace combines his Devil Fruit power with physical strength and Haki rather than relying solely on elemental attacks.
- Fought two Navy Vice Admirals and defeated one during the clash. 19 20
- Trained under Sea Stone restraint with Yota and Yamato for more than two months. 33
- Identified King's flame-based defense and speed-switching combat pattern during their aerial battle. 37
- Defeated Jinbe, then later overwhelmed Jack during the Wano conflict. 40 160
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Flame-absorbing gloves — Fingerless gloves that absorb and condense Ace's fire, substantially increasing the temperature of his flames. 147
- Flame Ship — A small, alloy-built vessel designed by Deuce and powered by Ace's flames; exceptionally fast but vulnerable to large waves due to its size. 147 148
Relationships
- Yota — Recruited Yota into the Spade Pirates after recognizing his combat and medical value. Yota supports Ace's growth, heals his injuries, helps develop his flight, and later gives him a fused Devil Fruit. 14 21 37 282
- Deuce — Ace's first mate and initially the Spade Pirates' doctor. Ace brings the ill Deuce to Yota for treatment; Deuce later designs the Flame Ship for him. 12 14 147
- Yamato — A fellow Spade Pirate who becomes Ace's training rival and combat partner after gaining freedom from Kaido's Sea Stone restraints. 31 32 161
- Whitebeard — Initially Ace's target as a rival, then his adoptive father after Ace joins the Whitebeard Pirates. Whitebeard's strength and paternal treatment reshape Ace's goals. 40 41 46
- Shanks — Meets Ace because of his connection to Luffy. Shanks recognizes Ace's heritage and sends Whitebeard a letter about him. 39
- Jinbe — Challenges Ace to stop him from reaching Whitebeard; Ace defeats him but has Yota treat his injuries afterward. 39 40
- Tama — A young Wano girl whom Ace befriends and teaches to weave straw hats. 25
- Luffy — Ace's younger brother. Shanks shows Ace goodwill because of this connection, and later discusses Luffy's freedom and resilience with Ace. 39 292
