Power Progression

Joker and Buggy share a body and Devil Fruit, but Joker’s willpower allows him to draw out substantially greater power from the same physical foundation 141 220.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Rapid physical and Devil Fruit development 59 Nightly training and criminal battles greatly improve Buggy’s body and Chop-Chop Fruit development while Buggy remains unaware of Joker’s activities.
Observation Haki, Armament Haki, and Chop-Chop Fruit awakening 70 Confirmed after roughly a year of Joker’s training and Buggy’s repeated escapes from danger. Buggy believes Joker is stronger than an ordinary Navy Vice Admiral.
Advanced Armament Haki and near-limit crushing application 141 Combines projected Armament Haki, internal destruction, and awakened division power to defeat Queen with one palm strike, reproducing a Tremor-Tremor Fruit-like effect.
Finer medical application of the Chop-Chop Fruit 324 Cures Platinum Lead Disease. His development has advanced beyond what Doflamingo knew about him.
Atmospheric Oscillation 355 Fractures the surrounding air with the Chop-Chop Fruit, producing a violent atmospheric blast that hurls Ace and Sabo away.

Background / History

Joker is one of the soul clones split off from Doflamingo. Doflamingo injected him into Buggy, who subsequently interpreted the possession as a split-personality condition. The encounter left Buggy with an instinctive fear of Doflamingo, although he did not understand its cause 59 219.

Initially, Joker took control at night. Buggy experienced these episodes as unexplained sleepwalking and assumed his sudden growth in strength reflected exceptional natural talent. Doflamingo could sense Joker’s activities and thoughts, but Joker later became the clone with the least contact with his creator and the weakest degree of control 59 324.

The connection between Joker and Doflamingo remains a closely guarded secret. Even Robin knows only that Doflamingo and the Joker Party have an understanding 484.

Appearance

  • Face: Pale white skin, blood-red lips, an exaggerated grin stretching toward his ears, and Buggy’s large red nose 67 324.
  • Hair: Cuts Buggy’s long blue hair into a rough, weed-like style and dyes it green; later described with dark green hair 67 324.
  • Clothing: Uses a clown outfit when a purple suit is unavailable 67.
  • Eyes: Described as yellowish during his confrontation with Queen 141.
  • Removable features: Can detach his facial skin and nose, exposing crimson muscle before restoring his familiar appearance 354.
  • Presence: His chaotic, sinister demeanor makes him seem entirely different from Buggy, despite sharing the same body 67 101.

Personality

Joker prioritizes amusement over survival, loyalty, or material gain. He willingly endangers his host—and therefore himself—for a joke. Of the more than one hundred million Beli obtained during his early crimes, he burns, squanders, or uses everything to provoke conflict, leaving Buggy nothing 59 67.

His theatrical behavior conceals considerable intelligence. He presents threats as performances, calls victims his “audience,” and treats terror as comedy. Knowledge interests him chiefly as a means of making the world more chaotic, while other people’s desperation provides opportunities for recruitment and experimentation 67 68 324 355.

He distinguishes himself from Buggy whenever shared identity would imply obligation. During Oden’s battle, he insists that Buggy—not Joker—is Oden’s friend. He later applauds while Inuarashi and Nekomamushi are brutally injured, and abandons Little Sadie when running Impel Down becomes boring 122 141 470.

His madness does not prevent careful planning or disciplined research. He maintains a spotless laboratory within the otherwise gaudily transformed prison and understands the need to keep scientific work separate from the surrounding disorder 427.

Abilities & Skills

Awakened Chop-Chop Fruit

  • Division and reassembly: Separates himself and other people into pieces, then restores them. His dismemberment does not necessarily kill the target, as demonstrated with Ohara’s scholars and Ulti 69 140 201.
  • Surgical manipulation: Opens skulls, removes brains, and rearranges bodily tissues without immediately ending the subject’s life 123 207 426.
  • Medical treatment: Removes the embedded ship’s wheel from Shiki’s head and later cures a patient’s Platinum Lead Disease 123 324.
  • Destructive division: Tears through rooms and walls, and can split an opponent’s Haki coating when his Devil Fruit development exceeds its strength 138 200.
  • Atmospheric Oscillation: Breaks the air around his hand to release a destructive gale 355.
  • Limit: Stronger Haki can suppress his division power; the interaction depends on the relative strength of Haki and Devil Fruit development 138.

Haki and Combat

  • Armament Haki: Uses projection and internal destruction together with awakened division power 141.
  • Observation Haki: Can vaguely assess an opponent’s strength. A detached eye retains a much weaker version of this perception 336.
  • Willpower advantage: Under identical physical conditions, his Haki and Chop-Chop Fruit output can reach several times Buggy’s level 141.
  • Host development: His stronger Haki also nourishes their shared body, accelerating Buggy’s physical growth even after control returns to Buggy 220.
  • Combat assessment: World Government intelligence considers Clown Buggy capable of exchanging moves with a Navy Admiral and lasting at least half an hour 335.
  • Limit: Joker is explicitly no match for Kaido alone during the Wano events 141.

Joker Virus / Joker Poison

Joker develops successive versions of a substance that induces madness, alters personality, and eventually enhances its subjects. Exposure does not produce identical results in every victim 140 141 332 356.

Version / Stage Chapter Documented Effects
Early virus 140 141 Gas bombs cause uncontrollable laughter and loss of reason. Ordinary pirates lose combat skill and strength, while the Numbers become violently aggressive.
Revised virus 324 332 Used on Flevance survivors; alters values and makes personalities resemble Joker’s rather than simply producing mindless lunatics.
Joker Virus No. 3 355 356 385 Incorporates artificial Devil Fruit factor. Improves physique and recovery, unleashes growth potential, and produces rational lunatics who can eventually appear normal.
Fourth stage 425 Used to infect numerous Impel Down prisoners and guards, including Domino.
Fifth generation 427 Revealed in the prison hospital and used during Magellan’s conversion.
  • Delivery: Uses gas bombs, injections, and intravenous experiments 140 324 355.
  • Resistance: Queen’s Ancient Zoan constitution and antidotes prevent complete madness, but do not eliminate dizziness and impaired will 140.
  • Willpower resistance: Hannibal delays the infection through determination, then kills himself rather than become a Joker Party member 426.
  • Recruitment distinction: Most Joker Party members are genuine admirers rather than virus victims. The organization later distinguishes poison-enhanced inner members from recruited outer members 326 384.

Disguise and Infiltration

  • Personality imitation: Can reproduce Buggy’s temperament so precisely that observers cannot reliably identify which personality is controlling the body 191.
  • Physical disguise: Uses detachable skin and body parts to impersonate Dr. Clover, prison guards, and Hannibal 72 424 426.
  • Suspended death: Drinks poison to make his apparent dying condition convincing during his encounter with Kuzan 72.
  • Sea Stone contingency: Replaces body parts with those of a non-Devil Fruit user, rendering his Sea Stone shackles ineffective during his initial Impel Down escape 425.
  • Reconnaissance: Uses an eye transplanted into a bird to observe Imu 336 340.
  • Allied decoys: Employs Drawing Fruit creations as substitutes, including a false Joker destroyed by the Five Elders 335.

Science and Technology

  • Brain interfaces: Keeps Queen’s separated brain connected to machinery that supplies intelligence, including information about World Government negotiations with Kaido 184.
  • Cyborg construction: Combines Queen’s mechanical expertise with separated organs and tissues to create a jet-propelled Brachiosaurus cyborg 207.
  • Mechanical workaround: The cyborg retains mechanical propulsion even when seawater drains its Devil Fruit user’s strength 207.
  • Devil Fruit insight: Explains how the Eight-Headed Serpent Fruit’s decay-like power can be incorporated into Haki, swordsmanship, and other attacks 145.
  • Strategic guidance: Challenges Doflamingo to develop the Illusion Space beyond a training environment rather than relying solely on increased physical stamina 144.

Manipulation and Strategy

  • Psychological leverage: Exploits Shiki’s need for restored strength and Poneglyph translations to secure cooperation 123 183.
  • Hostage control: Plans to take over Oden’s surviving forces through control of their ruling figure rather than personal legitimacy 123.
  • Deception campaigns: Uses infiltration, substitutes, betrayal, and false identities to conceal responsibility for his operations 239 335 406.
  • Opponent enhancement: Strengthens prospective enemies of the protagonists instead of teaching the protagonists directly, forcing harsher trials without concern for whether they survive 356.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Candy Bombs — Remote-detonated explosives placed inside the Ohara scholars’ heads to force cooperation 69.
  • Gas bombs and remote controls — Release Joker Virus across battlefields 140 141.
  • Throwing knives and daggers — Used for acrobatics and dangerous practice involving his crew 239 355.
  • Detachable facial skin — Serves as a reusable physical disguise 354 427.
  • Poneglyph translation dictionary — Obtained through coercion and used to influence Kuzan and Shiki 69 72 183 191.
  • Den Den Mushi — Used to summon Shiki and monitor the Brachiosaurus cyborg’s viewpoint 123 207.
  • Hot-air balloon and trained seabirds — Transport him toward Wano before his encounter with the Golden Lion Pirates 101.

Relationships

  • Doflamingo — Creator and main body. Uses Joker for actions he cannot openly undertake, but occasionally vetoes plans whose consequences are too dangerous 356 408 428.
  • Buggy — Possessed host who mistakes Joker for a second personality. Benefits from his training while suffering his pranks, enemies, and criminal obligations 59 67 325.
  • Golden Lion / Shiki — Uneasy collaborator. Joker restores his injured head and Haki, but repeatedly manipulates him; Shiki treats Joker far more cautiously than Buggy 123 183.
  • Nico Robin — Recognizes Joker as Buggy during the Ohara incident. Later knows of his connection with Doflamingo’s organization, but not his true origin 68 484.
  • Kanjuro — Devoted admirer whose Drawing Fruit supports Joker’s disguises and substitute-body schemes 203 239.
  • Shimotsuki Ushimaru — Trusted with supervising Buggy and later managing the Clown Pirates after Joker’s departure; uncomfortable with Joker’s betrayal of World 219 239.
  • Queen — Defeated enemy exploited for scientific expertise and intelligence 141 184 207.
  • Byrnndi World — Manipulated ally recruited through the prospect of attacking the World Government with amplified Dyna Stone; later betrayed when he becomes inconvenient 194 239.
  • Little Sadie — Infected follower and romantic partner at Impel Down. Joker abruptly breaks up with her and leaves the organization there in her hands 426 470.
  • Garp — Pursuer repeatedly misled by traps and false intelligence. Joker steals his warship and impersonates him to loot Navy bases 406.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Early Crimes and Ohara

While controlling Buggy at night, Joker obtains more than one hundred million Beli, ruins two pirate crews, and drives a Navy lieutenant commander into piracy. He later ships Buggy to Ohara in hundreds of separated pieces packed into boxes 59 67.

At the Tree of Omniscience, he demands a Poneglyph translation dictionary. When the scholars resist, he separates their heads, opens their skulls, and implants Candy Bombs before reassembling them. His objective is to turn their forbidden knowledge against the World Government 68 69.

During the Buster Call, he impersonates a dying Dr. Clover and gives Kuzan the dictionary and translated Poneglyph material. The disguise involves genuine suspended death, leaving him unable to defend himself; Doflamingo judges his survival chance below one percent. Buggy nevertheless awakens amid Ohara’s destruction 72.

Wano and Oden’s Successors

Buggy seeks Oden’s help in restraining his supposed second personality. Joker instead takes over the journey and persuades Shiki to carry him to Wano by revealing the presence of a Red Poneglyph 101.

Joker watches Oden’s battle without intending to save him, treats Shiki’s head injury, and plans to seize Oden’s surviving organization. At Oden Castle, he takes Hiyori hostage and shoots Toki when she offers herself in exchange 122 123 138.

He then spreads Joker Virus among the Beasts Pirates and Numbers, defeats Queen, and appropriates his scientific knowledge. With Kaido absent, Joker leads an alliance of the Nine Red Scabbards, Wano swordsmen, Oniwabanshu, and World against the Beasts Pirates; on Onigashima, he also offers to help the imprisoned Yamato escape 140 141 184 194 201.

Dyna Stone and Departure

Joker proposes combining Dyna Stone with the Chop-Chop Fruit and World’s More-More Fruit to devastate the World Government. The earlier massive explosion at Mary Geoise is later identified as his work 194 204 227 334.

When World becomes an obstacle and a risk to Joker’s secrets, Joker arranges betrayal through two of World’s officers and a CP0 agent. He leaves the Clown Pirates to Ushimaru and departs with Kanjuro to seek an archenemy 239.

Flevance and Mary Geoise

In Flevance, Joker offers treatment for Platinum Lead Disease while using patients as experimental subjects. He covertly assembles a force of deranged survivors, avoiding attention from both the authorities and Doflamingo 324.

Two years later, Joker Party attacks have killed numerous government officials, and his bounty exceeds two billion Beli. During a joint Mary Geoise operation with the Sun Pirates and Revolutionary Army, his faction spreads destruction while he pursues intelligence inside Pangea Castle. A painted substitute confronts the Five Elders, and his transplanted eye observes Imu 325 326 332 334 335 336.

East Blue and Goa Kingdom

Under the name Hisoka, Joker experiments on his own crew while completing Joker Virus No. 3. Ace and Sabo discover his identity and narrowly survive his atmospheric attack 354 355 356.

Doflamingo vetoes Joker’s plan to convert all of Uncertainty Terminal into an Arkham headquarters. The Joker Party nevertheless infiltrates and ravages Goa Kingdom, then escapes to sea. Garp’s subsequent pursuit repeatedly fails to corner Joker 356 384 385 406.

Impel Down / Arkham Asylum

After being sent to Level Six, Joker immediately escapes his restraints and infiltrates the prison staff. He infects guards and prisoners, exploits Magellan’s vulnerability with a Sea Stone toilet seat, and ultimately removes Magellan’s brain for conversion 424 425 426.

He renames Impel Down Arkham Asylum, establishes virus production in its hospital, and plans additional underground levels for secret bases. The takeover leaves the World Government unknowingly delivering newly captured pirates into his organization 427 428.

The Straw Hats’ Journey

Joker enhances Kuro with poison and plastic surgery, creating a more dangerous opponent for the Straw Hats at Syrup Village. Doflamingo approves the broader idea of strengthened enemies but considers Joker himself too dangerous to use as a controlled obstacle 469 470.

Bored with Impel Down, Joker abandons Little Sadie and returns to the outside world. At Sabaody, he operates through an auction house, manipulates slaves, and intends to capture the Straw Hats after their conflict with Celestial Dragons draws Kuzan and Borsalino 470 483.
