Ye Chen grew up in Huagang Village, formerly called Ye Family Village, alongside Ye Qiu and Ye Feng. His parents left him a Dragon Pattern Jade Pendant when he was young; he was later told they had died in a distant place. Before learning martial arts, he lived in poverty, scavenging to survive, and lacked even formal identity documents. 408 409 410

He initially wanted to become a martial arts master who protected the weak and punished bullies. After Ye Chen and his friends save the injured Chen Haotian, Chen Haotian recognizes his exceptional bone structure and accepts him, Ye Qiu, and Ye Feng as students. 409

While studying through the night, Ye Chen dreams of the Ye clan ancestor, who confirms that the jade pendant has recognized him as its master. The ancestor grants him beginner-level knowledge of cultivation, medicine, Daoist arts, martial skills, divine abilities, and other crafts, and charges him with returning to Sunset Island to restore the hidden Ye lineage. 410
