Background / History

Saint Dili Welfare Home

Ji Minghuan lived at Saint Dili Welfare Home in Li Jing and had never truly gone outside before his abduction. His closest companion there was Kong Youling, an albino girl who communicated nonverbally and could enter other people’s Spirit Worlds 1 3 50.

Two months before the main story, Kong Youling accidentally brought him into his own Spirit World while they were playing a two-player computer game. Ji Minghuan’s Spirit World took the form of a library, but he soon discovered he could reshape it by “splitting” off new mental spaces, creating places such as beaches, televisions, and game-filled rooms for them to explore together 50.

Imprisonment and Prophecy

About a month before Chapter 1, Ji Minghuan fell asleep at the welfare home and woke up inside an Imprisonment Room in an experimental facility. The staff repeatedly called him a Restricted Superhuman and research subject, claiming a prophecy predicted he would destroy the world 1 15.

The Instructor treated him as a child to be guided, while the Military Officer played the harsher role; Ji Minghuan recognized both as captors using “whip and sugar” tactics 1. Despite constant interrogation, he initially insisted he had no superpower and compared himself to an ordinary “Muggle” or stray dog 1.

Awakening the Game System

Ji Minghuan’s consciousness later loaded into Gu Wenyu, a high school student in Li Jing, as “Game Character #1.” Gu Wenyu’s memories entered his mind, and Ji Minghuan gained access to panels such as the Attribute Panel, Task Panel, Character Exclusive Training System, and Skill Tree System 3.

The system pushed him into investigating Gu Wenyu’s family and friends. His first major discovery was that Gu Wenyu’s elder brother, Gu Qiye, was secretly the famous Li Jing Esper “Blue Arc” 6 9.

Black Cocoon and Outside Operations

Using Gu Wenyu’s restraint-band superpower, Ji Minghuan adopted Gu Wenyu’s mask and windbreaker and appeared publicly as Black Cocoon. He became known for wrapping himself in black restraint bands like a hanging chrysalis, and the Esper Association quickly assigned him the codename “Black Cocoon” 8 13 18 19.

Ji Minghuan used Black Cocoon to gather leverage, build covert relationships, and push Gu Qiye toward deeper involvement with Rainbow Wings. He also planned to use Gu Qiye’s future access to investigate Sodalitas Salvifica and Rainbow Wings member Urushihara Ruri 44 147 256.

Xia Pingzhou and the White Crow Troupe

For his second game character, Ji Minghuan chose Xia Pingzhou, a rare Exorcist character tied to the White Crow Troupe and the “Wild Hunt” questline. Xia Pingzhou’s background centered on betrayal, revenge against “Jack the Ripper,” and a dangerous Heavenly Drive 34.

As Xia Pingzhou, Ji Minghuan entered the White Crow Troupe as the replacement for No. 12 and later received the codename “Chess Player.” He used the troupe’s chaos and reputation as a path toward Rainbow Wings, Sodalitas Salvifica, and stronger enemies needed for his cultivation missions 36 40 69 130.

Later Developments

Ji Minghuan later created Yagubalu, an Eternal Abyss Shark magical creature whose quest involved the Whale Garden Box and revenge against the Legendary Whale 131.

In the laboratory, he also grew closer to the other captive children. On his birthday, he wished for everyone’s survival; the Instructor then revealed the children had been raised to stop Ji Minghuan if he ever lost control 258.

When the Prophet finally arrived, Ji Minghuan was already aware that the greatest danger was not to himself but to the fragile people around him 378. After partially merging with Restricted Class 1001, he gained memories, mental stability, and the location of Sodalitas Salvifica’s base 383.

Appearance

Ji Minghuan’s true body is a thin, gaunt twelve-year-old boy usually seen in a hospital gown inside the Imprisonment Room. Prolonged confinement leaves his hair untrimmed, often falling over his eyes 1 149.

  • Thin body and gaunt face 1
  • Hospital gown while imprisoned 1
  • Overgrown fringe from long confinement 1
  • Black Cocoon outfit: black mask with blood-red eyeholes, built-in voice changer, and black swallowtail windbreaker 8 13
  • Black Cocoon combat silhouette: body wrapped in black restraint bands into a suspended chrysalis 18

Personality

Ji Minghuan is sarcastic, observant, and difficult to intimidate. Even while imprisoned, he jokes about his captors, questions the logic of his arrest, and treats the Instructor’s soft approach as another form of manipulation 1 15 31.

He views the world through a player’s mindset: efficient, utilitarian, and willing to use quests, identities, and factions as tools. He explicitly sees Gu Wenyu’s world as something like a game screen controlled from a higher dimension 7 40 69.

His morality is flexible. He can stage plans through others, kill Superhumans as part of White Crow Troupe operations, and show little guilt when treating enemies as “NPCs” or necessary resources 44 83 86.

Despite that, his attachment to specific people is genuine. Kong Youling is his clearest emotional weak point, and he lies to protect her, plans to rescue her, and reacts strongly to news about her condition 1 18 149 356. He also worries about the captive children and the people around him because they lack his Restricted-class durability 258 378.

Abilities & Skills

Reality Alteration Game System

Ji Minghuan’s core ability manifests as a game-like system with characters, quests, attributes, skill trees, and rewards. The Instructor predicted this form because Ji Minghuan liked video games 1 3.

  • Creates and controls “Game Characters” or Units, beginning with Gu Wenyu 3
  • Loads character memories directly into his mind 3
  • Uses panels such as Attribute Panel, Task Panel, Character Exclusive Training System, and Skill Tree System 3
  • Gains Split Points, Skill Points, and Attribute Points from main quests 6 9
  • Game UI elements are invisible to others, allowing public use without detection 6
  • Characters act autonomously when not directly controlled, following a “Code of Conduct” inferred from his role-playing logic 19
  • Constant 24-hour control can overstrain him and risks “Mental Split” 19
  • Can synchronize with different units and multitask across perspectives 31 61 98

Spirit World / Splitting

Ji Minghuan’s Spirit World is a library, and his unusual control over it predates the visible game system. He can reshape it by splitting off new mental spaces and overlaying them onto the original world 50.

  • Creates environments such as beaches, televisions, computers, and games 50
  • Stores character memories as books and photo albums in the Spirit Library 49
  • Can observe mental intruders from a higher-dimensional perspective inside his own Spirit World 50
  • Uses fake “True Self” disguises to mislead the Mentor’s probes 50
  • His real “True Self” is an empty shell he discarded in a corner of the library 50
  • Partial fusion with Restricted Class 1001 improves his mental stability and grants 1001’s memories 383

Restraint Bands / Black Cocoon

Through Unit 1, Gu Wenyu, Ji Minghuan controls black restraint bands that act like living strips or bandages. They form the basis of his Black Cocoon identity 4 18.

  • Absorb and share force to reduce physical impact 4
  • Assist high-speed movement and gravity offset 4 13
  • Provide sensory input for surveillance, tracking, and night vision through Restraint Belt Senses 7 9
  • Read a humanoid target’s data through Restraint Belt Detection after touch contact 14 26
  • Change color and camouflage his body for invisibility-like stealth 29
  • Suppress and steal abilities through later Malice-branch skills 48 129
  • Form a humanoid Restraint Belt Avatar with human-like appearance and weight 75
  • Avatar limits: one avatar at a time, cannot create another avatar, has 30% of the main body’s attributes, and lasts up to 12 hours 75
  • Learns Restraint Belt Blade to attach sharp black blades to the restraint bands 129

Heavenly Drive — Chess Player

Through Unit 2, Xia Pingzhou, Ji Minghuan uses a chess-themed Heavenly Drive that materializes combat pieces. The ability is tactical and minion-based 37.

  • King: provides protection 37
  • Soldiers / Black Iron Soldiers: block attacks and execute kills 37 83
  • Rook: fires cannonballs 37
  • Queen: assassinates targets and can carry/protect Ji Minghuan as Queen Colossus 37 61
  • Spirit increases the strength of chess-piece constructs 79
  • Evolves after killing nine Chief Grade Superhumans, increasing the number and power of the minions 99

Yagubalu / Eternal Abyss Shark

Yagubalu is Ji Minghuan’s third game character, a rare magical creature rather than a human unit 131.

  • Species: Eternal Abyss Shark 131
  • Extraordinary category: Magical Creature 131
  • Base attributes include S-Rank Spirit 131
