Background / History

Amber was created in the Shadow Fortress during the ancient Gondor Empire’s Shadow Project. The project sought to transform humans into Shadow Creatures as part of the Defiance Plan; its artificial humans combined altered human bodies with Shadow Dweller souls. The project was abandoned after it caused reality fragmentation, and the artificial humans were ordered destroyed. Amber survived as Artificial Human No. 36. 681

She was found in a crystal container by Salilendorf, a Shadow Stealth Expert searching the Dark Mountains for Gandor legacy. He named her Amber, cared for her in the Shadow Fortress, taught her about the outside world, and eventually escaped with her after discovering her ability to open rifts. 678 679

Salilendorf became Amber’s adoptive father. His later death in a remote Southern Territory village, following a joint judgment by the Church and local nobility, left Amber with few answers about either him or herself. 650 Her only early clue was a damaged Shadow Seal Ring that had been left with her; she later obtained a matching active ring from Francis II. 388 678

While initially believing the rings might lead her to her biological parents, Amber eventually learned the truth of her artificial origin through Salilendorf’s diary. 388 678 680 Later evidence connected her to the Night Lady: Gawain theorized that Amber was an erroneous copy of the Star Chart Custodian’s data, while the Night Lady ultimately identified Amber as her “extension” and “instance.” 1468 1563

Appearance

Amber is a small, slender half-elf woman with long hair, amber eyes, and pointed elven ears. Her apparent half-elf body conceals her origin as an artificial human. 388 1234 1468 1487

  • Her upward-curving ear edges indicate an elven paternal line under half-elf inheritance customs. 388
  • She can make her body fade from sight or enter the Shadow Realm, often leaving only her voice behind. 339 1144
  • When using Shadow Vision, her eyes become golden and shadow mist gathers around her, resembling a controlled “Shadow Sprite” form. 712

Personality

Amber is boisterous, playful, and chronically prone to slacking off, theft, and impulsive troublemaking. She has a large appetite, enjoys games, and is known to become overexcited enough to provoke punishment from her companions. 153 232

Her recklessness is tempered by an equally strong instinct for self-preservation. She will flee through a Shadow Rift at the first sign of real danger, yet may attempt absurd risks—such as climbing the Night Lady’s throne—when she believes the area is safe. 1383 1487

Despite her unserious facade, Amber is observant, intelligent, and increasingly responsible. She carefully studies records concerning her past, recognizes subtle intelligence patterns, protects her subordinates’ interests, and prepared contingency plans for the Intelligence Bureau in case her own instability worsened. 665 847 1493

Abilities & Skills

Shadow Affinity

Amber possesses exceptional affinity with the Shadow Realm, inherited from the Shadow Dweller soul within her artificial body. Even Salilendorf, himself a Shadow Supernatural Being, struggled to follow her movements. 679 1234

  • Performs high-level Shadow Leap to cross spaces, evade attacks, and enter sealed areas. 233 679
  • Opens and travels through Shadow Rifts, allowing rapid infiltration and escape. 1242 1469
  • Can become difficult to perceive or vanish from sight while moving through shadows. 6 339
  • Communicates with Shadow Dwellers, who responded to her despite ignoring Salilendorf. 679
  • Sees clearly in darkness and can activate Shadow Vision to perceive hidden shadow-related phenomena. 712
  • Her conventional combat ability is considered comparatively low despite her extraordinary mobility and stealth. 232 1249

Stealth, Espionage, and Intelligence Work

Amber’s underworld experience, shadow techniques, and sharp memory made her central to Gawain’s intelligence network. She can infiltrate locations unnoticed, assess people’s reactions, and rapidly retrieve detailed intelligence. 232 491 758

  • Recruited former criminals and tavern contacts into a lower- and middle-class intelligence network. 232 233
  • Entered the Black Whistle tavern without being noticed and immediately reasserted authority over its regulars. 232
  • Evaluates behavior and emotional responses to identify inconsistencies, such as recognizing genuine fear and shaken faith among priests. 491
  • Demonstrated enough investigative ability to serve as the Empire’s Head of Intelligence. 847

Ranged Weapon Proficiency

Amber’s half-elf bloodline gives her natural aptitude with ranged weapons. 152

  • Can conduct sustained-fire tests with ranged weapons. 152
  • Her aptitude is presented as an innate advantage of her half-elf heritage. 152

Shadow Dust Manipulation

After entering the Divine Kingdom of Shadow, Amber brought back gray-white Shadow Dust that she can summon, shape, and control. 1237 1242

  • Summons sand capable of blinding targets. 1242
  • Detects Shadow Dust mutations and hidden conditions invisible to others. 1249
  • Identified that half of Modir’s body was composed of Shadow Dust. 1249
  • Extracted a controlled sample of Shadow Dust from Modir with his consent. 1249
  • Retrieved a memory from Shadow Dust and used her power to temporarily stabilize Modir’s condition. 1251
  • Her perception and control of the dust are uniquely tied to the Divine Kingdom of Shadow. 1249 1253

Connection to the Night Lady

Amber has an anomalous bond with the Night Lady, later revealed to stem from her status as the deity’s extension and instance. 1468 1563

  • Can enter the Divine Kingdom of Shadow and perceive objects or entities normally hidden from her. 1237 1241
  • Reacts to the Anchor Generator and its patterns, receiving visions of ancient events connected to the Voyagers and the gods. 1467 1468
  • Brought back an “error replica” of the Shadow Scepter after touching the original in the Divine Kingdom. 1492
  • Was warned that her incomplete replication could eventually undermine her independent stability. 1539
  • The Night Lady later created an Anchor Generator specifically for Amber, establishing her as a complete and independent individual. 1563
