Background / History
Wanda was born in Sokovia and grew up with Pietro. A Stark Industries bomb destroyed her home and took her family; her father's limited-edition watch remained a particularly painful memory. The event left Wanda with lasting hatred toward Tony Stark and a desire for revenge. 53 553
Her innate Chaos Magic was limited until Hydra recruited her for Baron Strucker's experiments. Exposure to the Mind Stone greatly increased her ability to draw upon Chaos Magic, turning what had been a narrow source of power into an almost inexhaustible flow. Pietro gained super-speed through the same experiments. 34 216
As Scarlet Witch, Wanda and Pietro initially confronted Michael Passo. Michael recognized Wanda's magical nature and the exceptional potential of her Chaos Magic, but outmaneuvered the twins in battle. He later saved Pietro despite their hostility and offered both siblings positions in his organization, proposing to help Wanda master her power while studying it. 27 28 32
Wanda accepted Michael's guidance and trained extensively in magical control, weapon shaping, and close combat. Over time, she came to trust him, recognizing his concern for others despite her initial belief that he sought power as Strucker had. 53 97
After rescuing Lorna Dane's captive mutant group from Krakoa Island, Wanda learned through testing that she possessed the X-Gene. Michael reassured her that the origin of her abilities did not change who she was or his trust in her. 311 314 315
Appearance
Wanda is a fair-skinned young woman with reddish-brown to vivid red hair and dark eyes that can become covered in a crimson glow while she channels Chaos Magic. Her magic commonly manifests as dark-red waves, ripples, and a swirling aura around her body. 26 27 53
- Often wears black clothing during her early appearances. 26 27
- Has worn a red coat with black stockings while operating as Scarlet Witch. 145
- Her hair and clothing are frequently lifted by the pressure and wind generated by her own magic. 27 222
- Can appear to float or descend on a cloud-like mass of crimson energy. 290 311
Personality
Wanda is diligent and self-demanding in training. She actively seeks to improve her control, asks Michael thoughtful questions about combat and Sky Sword, and continues refining her technique even after becoming one of the group's strongest members. 53 97 323
She can be cautious around unfamiliar magic and threats, but is resourceful under pressure. Rather than relying solely on overwhelming power, she adapts her tactics—such as using close-quarters combat against Amora's superior traditional spellwork or exploiting her connection to the Mind Stone to track the Enchantress. 191 216 220
Wanda is protective of others and willing to intervene even when ordered to leave matters alone, as shown when she saves Jessica Jones from Venom and investigates the surrounding black-magic activity. She also takes personal initiative in helping Lorna's mutant group find safety. 145 146 314
Her resentment toward Stark gradually becomes more complicated after Iron Man saves her during the World-Burning War and she later fights beside him against Red Hulk. 53 408 410
Wanda is initially hesitant and anxious about expressing her feelings for Michael, seeking Pietro's advice and becoming visibly nervous before accompanying Michael to a formal banquet. She eventually confesses her feelings to him. 359 381 382
Abilities & Skills
Chaos Magic
Wanda possesses an innate ability to draw upon and command Chaos Magic, a form of dark magic associated with Chthon. Her magical reserves are normally described as nearly limitless, allowing her to wield power without the conventional cost faced by other mages. 27 139 352 415
- Projects destructive crimson energy waves and concentrated blasts. 27 82
- Creates barriers capable of intercepting shockwaves, magic, weapons, and physical attacks. 82 220 524
- Moves, restrains, redirects, and accelerates objects remotely. 81 146 361
- Forms magical weapons, including throwing knives, short staffs, daggers, and whips. 53 97 139 220
- Can lift and propel herself through the air. 290 602
- Manipulates the Chaos Magic of less-skilled users, including Eli Morrow's Darkhold-created constructs. 348
- Can overwhelm large groups and clear battlefields with wide-area magical output. 223 323
- Her strongest output can damage or dismantle Kree technology remotely. 568
Mental Influence and Magical Senses
The Mind Stone's influence broadened Wanda's ability to sense and affect minds. Her training later made telepathic probing a routine skill. 216 337
- Senses magical residues, including black magic and unfamiliar spell signatures. 142 146 195
- Perceives events and energy traces left at a location through retro-cognitive sensing. 142
- Probes memories and minds, including the human brains of cybernetically enhanced impostors. 310
- Released Erik Selvig from the Mind Stone's mental control. 226
- Remotely activated the Mind Stone within Amora's Scepter to send a traceable signal to a satellite. 218
Spatial and Defensive Magic
Wanda can use Chaos Magic to influence space and defend herself from attacks that would otherwise be fatal. 147 603
- Cushions high-impact falls and attacks with protective magical shells. 147
- Binds Vision while he attempts to phase through a wall. 265
- Uses spatial magic for evasive movement, though Thanos can forcibly counter it. 603
- Her passive magical awareness and reflexes allow her to react to sudden attacks, such as Lady Sif's attempted sword strike. 524
Matter Creation
After studying the Darkhold, Wanda gains the ability to create elements from nothing. 350 606
- Created carbon on her first attempt after reading the Darkhold. 350
- Can conjure matter more proficiently than Eli Morrow. 606
- Avoids using large-scale creation casually because channeling excessive external magical energy into the world could have serious consequences. 606
Combat Training
Michael trains Wanda to supplement her magic with physical movement and close-quarters fighting rather than treating Chaos Magic as simple telekinesis. 97
- Can maintain extended staff combinations in sparring. 97
- Uses close-range magical weapons and aggressive movement to disrupt spellcasters who prefer distance. 191 220
- Defeated or pressured Amora by forcing the Asgardian sorceress into close combat. 191 192
Limitations
- Early in her training, Wanda relied on Chaos Magic as telekinesis and lacked a full understanding of its magical nature. 27 361
- Her mental probing can be disrupted by powerful defenses; Vision's Mind Stone amplified their connection into an uncontrolled energy burst and enabled his escape. 266
- Against Skadi, she experiences magical depletion when the pace and output of combat exceed her recovery rate. 415
- Thanos can overpower her barriers, negate her spatial escape, and withstand her full-force Chaos Magic. 602 603
