Yan Ruyu is the Demon Race's princess and a descendant of the Azure Emperor. She seeks means to nurture the Demon Emperor's Sacred Heart and locate the Desolate Pagoda, believing that the Azure Emperor's primordial spirit may have entered it after his imperial body disintegrated. Lu Zhou's unusually detailed knowledge of these matters convinces her that he is unfathomable and leads her to seek his help. 44 45

She initially finds Lu Zhou's immediate proposal of marriage overwhelming. Accustomed to respectful, restrained admirers, she is flustered by his directness and escapes after calling him “very boring.” 47 Nevertheless, she gradually accepts his plans for nurturing the Demon Emperor Heart within Ye Fan, trusts his assurances regarding its return, and becomes increasingly open about her concern for him. 49 50 51

During the conflict with the Ji Family, Yan Ruyu fights beside Lu Zhou using the Azure Emperor Weapon. After Lu Zhou takes the bright moon from Ji Haoyue's Sea of Suffering Phenomenon and gives it to her as a “candle,” she openly says that she likes anything he gives her. 56 57

She later joins Lu Zhou in aiding her Nineteenth Ancestor, Wan Nian, whose possession of Pang Bo is resolved when Lu Zhou provides the Crown Prince's body as a suitable vessel.
