Background / History
Kenneth is the ninth-generation head of the Archibald family and one of the Clock Tower's youngest Lords. By his twenties, he had become Lord of the Mineralogy Department, led the El-Melloi Faction, taught at the Clock Tower, and held the directorship of Spiritual Evocation. Backed by the Yulifis and Barthomeloi houses, he was widely expected to become a Grand Magus. 19 20
He took Rovey Crowley as a student after recognizing his aptitude for alchemy, wind-and-water magecraft, and the El-Melloi Faction's Mystic Codes. Although Rovey frequently skipped class and appropriated materials from the El-Melloi estate, Kenneth intended to make him his successor and arrange his future marriage into the family. 20
Rovey's Hallcraft research changed Kenneth's assessment of him. Initially dismissive of a theory proposed by a student at the Opening stage, Kenneth became convinced of its value after reviewing the data and chose Rovey as his direct disciple. He supplied the Crowley family with resources and research funding in exchange for El-Melloi priority over Hallcraft's eventual patent rights. 115
Personality
Kenneth is intensely proud of his lineage, title, accomplishments, and magecraft. He habitually dismisses magi he considers inferior, particularly provincial practitioners and students whose talent fails to meet his standards. 15 20 38
His arrogance does not prevent him from respecting exceptional ability. He recognizes Sakura's Imaginary Numbers Constitution as extraordinary, accepts Rovey's Hallcraft as a foundational achievement, and treats Aozaki Touko as a fellow genius rather than a subordinate. 37 113 115
As an instructor, Kenneth is demanding but protective. He worries over Rovey's disappearance, accepts Waver's potential after the war, and refuses to abandon his students even in Fuyuki's most dangerous moments. 15 82 92
Abilities & Skills
Mineralogy and Alchemy
Kenneth is a Color-Rank magus specializing in mineralogy and alchemy. His work with Mystic Codes and magical furnaces allows him to prepare exceptionally well-supplied battlefields. 19 35

- Created handwritten instructional material on advanced wind-and-water fluid control for users of Volumen Hydrargyrum. 117
Volumen Hydrargyrum

- Automatically protects its user when danger arises. 35
- Serves as a high-grade computational device for the El-Melloi Faction. 8
- Can be paired with formations and gem magic to negate a hostile workshop's advantage. 35
- Was personally given to Rovey after his promotion to Festival Rank. 8
Workshop Warfare and Preparation
Kenneth treats a Magic Workshop as a decisive strategic asset and fills his own with restrictions, familiars, magical furnaces, and concealed countermeasures. 34 35
- Set a baited trap for Emiya Kiritsugu instead of personally entering the battlefield. 24
- Equipped himself with defensive, stealth, reconnaissance, positioning, and amplification Mystic Codes. 29
- Used a substitute doll purchased from Aozaki Touko to survive Kiritsugu's RPG attack and expose the Magus Killer's methods. 29
- Prepared a magical furnace, relics, and additional Mystic Codes before joining the Holy Grail War. 20
Combat Ability
Beyond magecraft, Kenneth is an accomplished close-quarters fighter. His students discover that his unarmed strikes can destroy practice puppets. 21
- Uses the Three Original Stones against Kiritsugu. 24
- Applies scientific knowledge to counter modern tactics such as heat camouflage and ballistic targeting rather than rejecting technology outright. 24
- Became markedly more cautious after treating Rovey as a hypothetical opponent, refusing to let pride dictate his decisions. 24
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Volumen Hydrargyrum — His mercury-based supreme Mystic Code. 8
- Three Original Stones — Magical attack used during his pursuit of Emiya Kiritsugu. 24

- Jewel-Grade Mystic Eyes — Received a pair from Rovey during the Mystic Eye wager. 186
Relationships
- Rovey Crowley — Direct disciple and designated successor. Kenneth provides him with resources, protects his interests, and plans to integrate the Crowley and El-Melloi families through marriage. 20 115
- Waver Velvet — Initially regarded as an untalented, troublesome student, but later accepted as a disciple and promoted him into clerical and secretarial roles after recognizing his theoretical and administrative talent. 38 92 116
- Fionn mac Cumhaill — His Lancer-class Servant in the Fourth Holy Grail War. Kenneth entrusted Fionn with battlefield initiative and mana usage. 23 24
- Iskandar — Waver's Rider. Kenneth attempted to recruit him, but Iskandar rejected the offer and considered Kenneth a possible subordinate. 35
- Aozaki Touko — A respected but cautiously handled ally. Kenneth agreed to support her against her Sealed Designation while securing her as an external El-Melloi consultant through contract. 113 116
- Reines El-Melloi Archisorte — His adoptive sister and niece. Kenneth selected Rovey as her future husband and instructs her to care for him as the household's future hostess. 114 178
- Luphreus Nazaire Yulifis — Kenneth's teacher and Lord of the Spiritual Evocation Department. Yulifis supported Kenneth's choice of Rovey as successor, despite wanting Rovey for his own family. 121 122
- Emiya Kiritsugu — Holy Grail War opponent whose reliance on firearms and anti-mage tactics Kenneth openly disdains. Kenneth outmaneuvered him with traps and a substitute doll. 24 29
Story Role / Major Arcs
Fourth Holy Grail War
Kenneth enters the Holy Grail War after learning Rovey has vanished to Fuyuki. He initially considers the ritual beneath his standing, but joins to retrieve and protect his disciple. 15 20
He summons Fionn mac Cumhaill as Lancer and uses him to draw out rival Servants. Unlike the predicted future in which he would die before using his full strength, Kenneth prepares extensively and allows Fionn greater tactical initiative. 23 24 32
After Rovey and Waver confront him in his workshop, Kenneth learns of the future in which Waver's theft of a catalyst contributes to his death. Rather than retaliating, he accepts their alliance after reading Waver's self-criticism and seeing Rovey's Hallcraft prototype. 32 35 36
Kenneth joins Rovey, Waver, and later Matou Zouken in operations against the remaining Masters and Servants. He acts as bait against the enemy alliance, supplies Waver's mana through his workshop, and provides Rovey with protection for the battle against Saber. 41 42 67
Postwar El-Melloi Reforms
Having survived the war, Kenneth returns to London and reorganizes his faction. He promotes Reines and Waver, recognizes Waver's aptitude for administrative work, and begins planning the El-Melloi Faction's long-term expansion. 113 116
He formalizes Touko's position as an external consultant, coordinates with Rovey to manage responsibility for the Holy Grail War's aftermath, and intends to focus on advancing toward Grand rank while Rovey develops Hallcraft. 113 116
Mystic Eye Train and Clock Tower Politics
Kenneth represents the Archibald family during the Clock Tower's response to the Mystic Eye Train's disappearance. He later receives Jewel-Grade Mystic Eyes from Rovey, though he worries that Rovey's public wager will provoke the gathered magi. 177 186
When Rovey drains London's leylines while attempting to summon Aiwass, Kenneth personally joins the Department of Law's investigation out of concern for his disciple. 190
Later Career
Kenneth eventually becomes a Grand Magus, fulfilling the potential attributed to him since his youth. His survival preserves the Mineralogy Department and prevents the El-Melloi Faction's decline; Waver subsequently becomes El-Melloi II through experience and earned status rather than inheriting a ruined faction after Kenneth's death. 469
His workshop-oriented magecraft later becomes widespread enough in London to be taught as a practical foundational discipline. 502
