Background
During the battle against the Word Bearers, the God-Emperor manifested through a blood-soaked Icon of the Emperor. The icon shed tears of blood before golden holy light consumed several traitor Astartes, burned away the cultists’ courage, and stripped Chaos followers of their borrowed power. 50
He later made direct contact with Gao Yi through the Warp, appearing beside Gao Yi’s projection as an immense black, icy sun. Impressed by Gao Yi’s pure human soul and ability to devour and purify Warp energy, he invited Gao Yi to Terra to temporarily occupy the Golden Throne and block the daemons beneath it. Gao Yi refused. 56
Instead, the God-Emperor concealed Gao Yi’s Warp presence from the Chaos Gods, authorized him to act as a Living Saint, and sent Bishop Holt a dream commanding him to support Gao Yi. 57 This arrangement remained conditional: the Emperor viewed his proximity to Gao Yi as both protection and a safeguard against Gao Yi ever acting against humanity. 57 150
When the Four Chaos Gods confronted him through their avatars, the God-Emperor revealed that the Golden Throne could no longer fully suppress the faith-driven power pushing him toward godhood. He enlisted Gao Yi as a “pressure valve” to absorb his excess energy, then unleashed holy fire that forced the avatars of Khorne, Tzeentch, Nurgle, and Slaanesh to retreat. 150 151
On Terra, his deteriorated physical state disturbed Guilliman and Ferrus Manus: his body was desiccated, connected to countless tubes, and sustained by the Golden Throne. Within their minds, however, he appeared as a convergence of innumerable consciousnesses, with a remnant of his former self still preserved. 275
Appearance
The God-Emperor has two known manifestations: a physical body upon the Golden Throne and a psychic form within the Warp.
- Warp manifestation — an enormous, motionless, pitch-black icy sun that radiates vast quantities of golden psionic energy. 56
- Physical body — a desiccated corpse-like figure seated upon the Golden Throne, pierced by innumerable tubes that drain his life force and psychic power. 275
- Psychic presence — perceived as a collection of countless wills, emotions, and consciousnesses rather than a single stable form. 275
- Divine radiance — manifests as golden holy light and purifying flames capable of destroying daemonic power. 50 151
Personality
The God-Emperor is devoted to humanity’s survival even at the expense of his own existence. He remains on the Golden Throne to contain Warp threats and is willing to endure continual torment rather than abandon the Imperium. 56 276
His concern for humanity is paired with severe caution. He initially limits his support for Gao Yi because excessive intervention could expose him to the Chaos Gods, and later instructs Guilliman to supervise Gao Yi due to his unexplained origin, rapid growth, and absence from fate or prophecy. 57 275
He rejects godhood despite drawing immense strength from faith. He considers full apotheosis dangerous because it would erode his humanity and potentially bring disaster upon the people he seeks to protect. 150 153
Abilities & Skills
Warp Manifestation and Psionic Communication
The God-Emperor can manifest his consciousness in the Warp and communicate directly through thought.
- Appears as an icy black sun beside Gao Yi’s Warp projection. 56
- Can sense Gao Yi’s soul, projection, and Mechanicus-derived faith from across the Warp. 56 57
- Communicates through dreams, psychic messages, and Vox-casters. 57 152
- Scrutinized Gao Yi’s body at a cellular level to confirm that he was human. 276
Holy Light and Purification
His divine power burns Warp corruption, daemons, and Chaos-derived power.
- Manifested through an Imperial icon to kill Word Bearers and rout Chaos cultists. 50
- Purified Warp corruption in Malphee’s Lower Hive during the clash with the Chaos Gods’ avatars. 151
- Destroyed or drove away Warp creatures in the area surrounding his projection after his confrontation with the Four Gods. 153
- His power can be recognized by psykers and faithful Imperials as distinct from ordinary Warp energy. 58
Blessings and Religious Authority
The God-Emperor can empower loyal followers and legitimize them through visions and miracles.
- Authorized Gao Yi to act as his Living Saint within the Imperium. 57
- Sent Bishop Holt a dream identifying Gao Yi as his chosen representative. 57
- Allowed Gao Yi to channel stored golden energy into visible miracles, including holy light, levitation, and golden wings. 154
- Faith in him provides resistance against Chaos corruption and plague-like Warp effects. 44 206
Possession
The God-Emperor can take control of a willing or endangered host body to intervene directly.
- Possessed Guilliman when Tzeentch nearly dragged him into the Labyrinth of Change. 263
- Used Guilliman’s body and the Emperor’s Sword to flood Tzeentch’s realm with holy fire, forcing Tzeentch to sever part of his own daemon realm to escape. 263 264
- Ended the possession after Guilliman was expelled from the Warp. 264
Command over the Adeptus Custodes
The God-Emperor retains enough influence over Terra to direct the Adeptus Custodes.
- Ordered the Custodes to dispatch a squad to aid Gao Yi in the Calixis Sector. 152
- His commands, relayed through Vox-casters, were obeyed despite uncertainty among the Custodes. 152
Limits and Costs
His power is immense but constrained by the Golden Throne and the danger of godhood.
- The Golden Throne sustains his life while continuously absorbing his psychic energy. 150 275
- Faith strengthens him but also accelerates his transformation into a god, a fate he actively resists. 150
- Releasing enough power to confront the Four Chaos Gods required Gao Yi to absorb his excess energy. 150 151
- His outburst against the Four Gods left him temporarily suppressed and less able to influence the material universe. 153
- Maintaining Warp-born loyalist forces such as the Scars Legion further pushes him toward godhood. 210
Relationships
