Background

Garp adopted Haku after the World Government’s assassins killed Haku’s parents over their connection to the “D” Clan. He raised Haku as his grandson and personally forced him into Marine training, keeping his existence hidden from most of the organization. 12 382 509

His training methods were notoriously brutal: he threw Haku into a thousand-fathom abyss, left him in forests at night, and tied him to a balloon to send him into the sky. Garp considered this necessary preparation for becoming a strong Marine. 192

Garp nominated the seventeen-year-old Haku for the position of Marine Admiral, openly boasting about his grandson’s potential despite Sengoku’s reservations. After Haku overwhelmed Akainu during his evaluation, Garp’s confidence in him was vindicated. 1 2 5

When Haku is transferred to G5 in the New World, Garp objects out of concern for the danger he will face. After Haku defeats the Beasts Pirates, Garp enthusiastically celebrates the achievement at Marine Headquarters. 26 47

Ace’s Execution and the Summit War

Garp is unable to reconcile his Marine duty with Ace’s impending execution. He protests the decision to reveal Ace as Roger’s son but ultimately remains at Marineford as the war approaches. 212 250

After CP0 steals Haku’s unconscious body and hands him to Vegapunk for replication and memory erasure, Garp storms into Akainu’s office demanding answers. Sengoku and Tsuru intervene before the confrontation escalates further. 278
