Background / History

More than two thousand years ago, Bi Changchun was a scholar traveling to the capital for the imperial examinations. Illness caused him to fail the examination; ashamed to return home, he jumped from a cliff. He survived, discovered a dead cultivator’s remains and sword below, and used his newly acquired Foundation Establishment cultivation to comprehend Sword Flight and escape. When he returned home, he found his village destroyed by war, leaving him to wander as a rogue cultivator. 308

Rather than inherit a sect’s established method, Bi observed the natural world and human life: tides, stars, beasts, storms, warfare, cities, and water wearing through stone. These observations eventually gave him an enlightenment that sent his cultivation advancing by leaps and bounds. His path depends on individual comprehension rather than merely accumulating spiritual energy. 205 308

By his third century, Bi had become powerful enough to challenge the leading experts of the Ten Great Sects of both the Righteous and Demonic paths. He defeated each within three moves and compelled them to swear not to provoke the Bi, Tan, Jing, and Wu families without cause. He then ordered the three attendant families to establish independent sects and support one another, creating the foundation of the Four Great Families. 205 206

Bi later became the Punishment Envoy of the Demon Ghost Domain. During a major Blood Wolf uprising, he split Xishan Cliff with a single sword strike, exterminated more than four hundred thousand cultivated Blood Wolves, and killed a Spirit Transformation demon and ghost who refused his demand for atonement. 298

Appearance

Bi Changchun is a lean, clear-complexioned old man most often seen in a plain green robe. Though thin and somewhat stooped in earlier appearances, he carries a sharp, restrained presence that makes him seem inseparable from heaven and earth. 309 706 1069

  • Usually wears a simple green robe. 509 706

Personality

Bi Changchun is proud, austere, and intensely self-reliant. He disdains exploiting others’ weaknesses, refuses to take what belongs to his disciple, and insists that rules should not be broken merely for his convenience. 440 545

His cultivation philosophy centers on understanding rather than imitation. He patiently explains that power may be borrowed from the world rather than possessed outright, and he encourages Yue Qianchou to develop his own path instead of coveting another person’s techniques. 307 308

Although feared for his ruthless judgment and willingness to kill powerful enemies, Bi does not casually target weak opponents who cannot challenge him. He is capable of restraint, honor, and unexpected patience with those he accepts as allies or disciples. 506 697 1071

Story Role / Major Arcs

Demon Ghost Domain

Bi’s reputation dominates the Demon Ghost Domain long before his on-page appearance. Meng Yan, Yu Ji, and Ao Li react to his portrait by kneeling in fear, while demons and ghosts consider even serving on Shuntian Island an extraordinary opportunity. 265 317

When Yue Qianchou attempts to leave the domain, Bi stops and injures him with ease, then assigns him work cultivating vegetables. After Yue defeats Bi’s disciple He Li, Bi gives Yue freedom within the domain, entrusts him with the Deficient Flame Mysterious Fruit, and accepts him as a disciple. 269 294

Guardian of the Cultivation World

Bi’s presence deters the major sects and nations from openly attacking Huaxia. His name alone makes top experts cautious, while his arrival at God of Wealth Peak restores confidence against Green Brow, a Netherworld envoy. 542 658

He easily subdued Green Brow, destroyed the envoy’s Netherworld summons, and purged the lingering Netherworld energy with Righteous Qi. 659 660

Departure and Eastern Pole Sacred Land

Bi publicly confirms both his connection to the Four Great Families and his master-disciple relationship with Yue Qianchou before entering the Eastern Pole Sacred Land through a lightning-filled black vortex. His disappearance emboldens foreign powers to move against Huaxia. 706 707

Within the Eastern Pole Sacred Land, he challenged a Great Lord, survived an ambush, and killed three late Great Immortals despite suffering severe wounds. He refused healing elixirs, instead using his injuries as an opportunity to comprehend reforging the fleshly body. 732 734

Underworld Conflict and Return

Bi entered the Underworld, defeated two Nether Generals and two Immortal Lords, fought the Four Great Underworld Generals to a draw, and challenged the Nether Emperor. Bai Qi severely wounded him, but Bi escaped into a forbidden zone beyond the emperor’s pursuit. 826 827

He later reappeared near the Myriad Heavens Barrier, where he used sparring with Old Man Meng to improve his techniques. After reuniting with Yue, he killed Cang Yunxin and continued pursuing breakthroughs through battle. 1069 1070 1071

Battles of the Higher Realms

Bi fought Immortal Emperor Jin Tai and Nether Emperor Bai Qi simultaneously, turning their attacks against them and contributing to the collapse of the Immortal Palace. 1094

He later confronted Wangqing, neutralized the Six Dragon Snow Blue Sword with lightning, and chose not to destroy the weapon despite holding the advantage. 1098
