Background / History
Kurama was created by the Sage of Six Paths and remembers childhood under him as largely happy and carefree, despite having to study. Shukaku was already a frequent target of Kurama’s bullying during those years 35 68 162.
After the Sage’s departure, Kurama experienced repeated control and confinement. Madara Uchiha forced Kurama into a contract and used his eyes to take control. Hashirama Senju subsequently captured Kurama with one hand and sealed the fox inside his wife, Mito. Kurama resented being defeated so easily and then told how powerful it was 52 57 322.
Kushina later became Kurama’s host but rarely spoke to the fox. Kurama also resented Minato for blocking its senses during the couple’s private moments 35.
The Masked Man extracted Kurama from Kushina, controlled its mind, and unleashed it against Konoha. Minato redirected a Tailed Beast Bomb, defeated the attacker, and ultimately sealed Kurama inside Naruto. Minato and Kushina also left their chakra within the seal as a safeguard for their son 35 54 55.
Appearance
Kurama’s original form is an enormous orange-red fox with nine tails, narrow eyes, and an intimidating presence. Its everyday miniature form resembles a cat-sized pet fox 9 12.
- Eyes: Vertical pupils; initially described as lantern-sized in the giant form 9 30.
- Tails: Nine soft tails, usually concealed so that only one remains visible 12.
- Variable size: Can shrink to a portable miniature form or grow into a giant; takes a twenty-meter form opposite Shukaku 12 162.
- Clothing: Frequently wears a white lace princess dress, with an apron while cooking 117 145.
- Giant-form demeanor: Appears markedly fiercer and colder when returning to the original form for fusion 276.
Personality
Kurama is proud, suspicious of humans, and fiercely protective of personal dignity. Initially, the fox refuses Naruto’s offer of freedom in exchange for becoming a working pet, even declaring that permanent imprisonment would be preferable. Submission begins because Kurama fears the unknown powerhouse behind Naruto, whose ability to break the seal far exceeds Kurama’s understanding 10 12 35.
Over time, that reluctant arrangement becomes a life Kurama genuinely values. Conversation, freedom, and belonging matter more than additional combat strength. By the time the Yin-attribute half becomes available, Kurama worries that fusion might disrupt the personality and family life already established with Naruto and Sasuke 35 275.
Kurama remains selective about affection: Naruto’s petting is welcome, but strangers touching the fox are not. Pride also makes Kurama susceptible to praise, particularly over clothing. Beneath the bluster, Kurama becomes attentive to Naruto’s meals, training, and responsibilities as Hokage 42 85 145 215 300.
