Background / History

Orochimaru trained under Hiruzen Sarutobi and became one of Konoha’s three celebrated shinobi alongside Tsunade and Jiraiya. Hiruzen regarded him as his most intelligent student, but Orochimaru secretly abducted Konoha ninja for human experiments. When those experiments were discovered, Hiruzen could not bring himself to kill his former pupil and allowed him to escape 139 140 142.

After becoming a rogue ninja, Orochimaru continued researching powerful bodies, unusual inherited abilities, and immortality. He developed Living Corpse Reincarnation and maintained laboratories funded by Otogakure. He also belonged to Akatsuki at an earlier point, although his participation served his own interests rather than loyalty to the organization 208 209 299.

His original Konoha Crush Plan was intended to provoke a wider war: more deaths would provide resources for strengthening Impure World Reincarnation. Killing Hiruzen was an additional objective. Learning that Naruto’s cultivation could lead to immortality caused him to abandon that plan and prioritize obtaining Naruto’s body or even a single cell 144 152.

Appearance

  • Recognizable features: Long black hair, vertical pupils, and an unusually long tongue that he habitually uses to lick his lips 136 139.
  • Forest of Death appearance: Wears a bamboo hat, tomoe-shaped earrings, and a purple cushion strapped to his back 136.
  • Face masks: Uses a skin mask bearing his own face over a female vessel; the mask helps conceal the identity of the body he occupies 138 143 208.
  • Tsukishirohime disguise: Appears as a woman in a cherry-blossom kimono and can switch between a seductive voice and his original male voice 145 150.
  • Disguise adjustment: Tries to suppress his lip-licking habit while playing Tsukishirohime, both to maintain the role and to avoid damaging his mask 208.

Personality

Orochimaru treats people primarily as research material. He covets Sasuke’s Sharingan and Naruto’s exceptional physique, and considers his existing experimental subjects worthless after witnessing Naruto’s Indestructible Body. Even Kimimaro’s approaching death becomes an opportunity to study a rare Kaguya Clan corpse 138 139 208.

He is patient, manipulative, and willing to change methods when force fails. He offers revenge, withheld inheritances, and privileged information to recruit Naruto and Sasuke, then adopts a honey trap after discovering that he cannot overpower Naruto. His willingness to abandon the Konoha Crush Plan shows that immortality matters more to him than destroying the village 136 144 152 156.

Despite his pride, survival takes precedence when he is cornered. He bargains, surrenders techniques, and accepts employment under Naruto rather than continue a hopeless fight. That outward cooperation does not end his schemes: he views the Breeding Farm position as access to Naruto and later secretly collects his DNA 210 211 212 214 277.

Abilities & Skills

Living Corpse Reincarnation

  • Developed through his extensive knowledge of human anatomy and experimentation 208.
  • Allows him to continue living in another vessel after the destruction of his occupied body; his apparent death in the Forest of Death is overturned when Danzo examines the remains 140 143 144.
  • Does not remove Sasuke’s tracking advantage: the Flying Thunder God mark remains detectable at a different location after the body is destroyed 144.
  • Eventually provides the technique to Naruto as part of his surrender and compensation 211 212.

Impure World Reincarnation

  • Reanimates Hashirama Senju and Tobirama Senju to fight on his behalf 209.
  • The summoned Hokage retain combat experience and use their respective Wood and Water techniques 210.
  • Orochimaru believes that possessing more of their remains would strengthen the summons; the versions he fields are insufficient against Naruto 208 210.
  • Gives Naruto the technique’s scroll after his defeat 212.

Snake Ninjutsu

  • Shadow Snake Hands: A B-rank technique that summons numerous snakes for intimidation, restraint, capture, and successive attacks. It is particularly effective against an unprepared opponent 179.
  • Coiling Snake Way, Rushing Serpent Steps, and Array of a Thousand Snakes: Summon snakes to attack or overwhelm a target 139.
  • Evil Snake Hand Burst: Uses snakes to restrain a target before detonating chakra. Against Naruto, Orochimaru detonates them early because the preceding attacks are destroyed too quickly 139.
  • Chakra cost: Can perform several large snake techniques consecutively, but doing so leaves him panting; their explosions fail to injure Naruto 139.

Defensive and Replacement Techniques

  • Snake Substitute: Burrows underground to evade Sasuke’s fire attacks and reappears elsewhere 137 138.
  • Triple Rashomon: Summons three defensive gates against incoming Rasengan 138.
  • Orochimaru-Style Body Replacement: A technique he developed himself, used alongside Triple Rashomon to survive Sasuke’s attack 138.

Taijutsu and Swordsmanship

  • Uses precision and experience to compensate for the limited physical strength of his female vessel 138.
  • Forces Sasuke onto the defensive during an extended close-range exchange with the Kusanagi Sword 138.
  • Cannot match Naruto’s physical power; even the Kusanagi Sword fails to pierce Naruto’s hardened skin 138 139.

Genjutsu

  • Uses Hell Viewing Technique to trap an opponent in a fear-based illusion and create an opportunity to escape 139 140.
  • The technique has no effect on Naruto because of his immense spiritual strength 140.

Infiltration and Intelligence

  • Infiltrates the Chunin Exams as a Kusagakure ninja and later re-enters Konoha despite heightened security 133 145.
  • Excels at concealment, disguise, hiding, and escape; Sasuke’s Flying Thunder God mark exposes movements that others fail to notice 143 153.
  • Uses Kabuto as a spy and exchanges information with Danzo. When Kabuto suspects surveillance, they arrange to communicate through dead drops 136 153 213.

Biological Research

  • Performs skilled dissections to study the energy within powerful ninja bodies and inherited traits 208.
  • Takes responsibility for rare species, diversified breeding, and expansion planning at Naruto’s Breeding Farm 214 274 277.
  • Continues pursuing Naruto’s biology in secret, including collecting a DNA sample while discussing farm expansion 277.

Weaknesses

  • Fear of insects: Naruto’s Netherworld Passage exposes this fear. A cage of cockroaches later causes visible alarm, and Orochimaru asks Sasuke to keep it away 140 208 210.
  • Persistent tracking: Sasuke first marks him in the Forest of Death, then places roughly one hundred Flying Thunder God marks across his body to prevent another escape 138 144 210.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — Drawn from a snake emerging from his mouth; sharp enough to pierce iron. He loses it during the battle with Naruto, who gives it to Sasuke 138 139 140.
  • Face masks and disguise clothing — Conceal his vessels and support identities such as Tsukishirohime 143 145 208.
  • Two coffins — Hold the reanimated First and Second Hokage used as his trump card against Naruto 209.
  • Scalpels and sterilized gloves — Used for dissection in his laboratory 208.
  • Laboratory bases and specimens — Financed through Otogakure; one major base and its experimental samples are destroyed during Naruto’s assault 209 211.

Relationships

  • Naruto Uzumaki — Initially a desired reincarnation vessel and research subject; later his employer. Orochimaru accepts the Biological Advisor position for three meals a day while privately continuing to pursue Naruto’s cultivation secrets 139 212 214 277.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Covets his body and Sharingan, but fails to recruit him. Sasuke injures, tracks, and ultimately helps restrain him; Orochimaru later delivers Ninjutsu to Sasuke under Naruto’s arrangement 136 138 210 274.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teacher who spared him after discovering his experiments. Orochimaru repeatedly expresses a desire to kill him and welcomes Naruto’s confrontation with him 140 142 222.
  • Anko Mitarashi — Former student who recognizes his dangerous experimental history and responds urgently to his infiltration of the exams 139.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Valued subordinate, pupil, and Konoha spy. Supplies intelligence, learns Orochimaru’s Ninjutsu, and helps him ambush Rasa 136 153 180.
  • Kimimaro — Loyal subordinate who assists in Rasa’s assassination and hopes to become part of Orochimaru’s body. Orochimaru orders him to rest but also plans to study his corpse after death 180 181 208.
  • Danzo Shimura — Information source who later seeks to capture Orochimaru and obtain his successful immortality research 136 143 213.
  • Rasa — Former collaborator in the Konoha Crush Plan. Orochimaru murders him to prevent renewed attacks on Konoha from disrupting his pursuit of Naruto 170 179 180 181.
  • Karin — Under his care; Naruto specifically intervenes to ensure her safety after Orochimaru joins the Breeding Farm 274.
  • Tsunade and Jiraiya — Fellow Legendary Sannin. Both openly dislike him even after Naruto declares him an ally 301.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Chunin Exams and Apparent Death

Orochimaru infiltrates the exams and decides that he wants both Naruto and Sasuke as vessels. In the Forest of Death, he offers them power and information about their families, but both reject him. Sasuke wounds him with Flying Thunder God and Rasengan before Naruto takes over the fight 133 136 137 138.

Naruto’s twenty-meter Indestructible Body shifts Orochimaru’s interest decisively toward research. His sword, snake techniques, and genjutsu fail to stop Naruto. Netherworld Passage exposes his fear of insects, and Naruto destroys his occupied body after Orochimaru attacks again 139 140.

Danzo’s examination reveals that the corpse belonged to a woman wearing Orochimaru’s face mask. Sasuke independently confirms his survival through the displaced Flying Thunder God mark 143 144.

Tsukishirohime and Rasa’s Assassination

Returning in a new vessel, Orochimaru adopts the identity of Tsukishirohime and has Kabuto investigate Naruto’s schedule. He rehearses seductive dialogue and stages an ankle injury to solicit Naruto’s help, but Naruto delegates the escort to Sasuke rather than accompany him to the hotel 145 150 155 156.

When Rasa refuses to abandon the Konoha Crush Plan, Orochimaru arranges a false reconciliation meeting. He chooses terrain that restricts the Sand ninja’s abilities, then kills Rasa with Kabuto and Kimimaro’s assistance. Removing Rasa lets him resume pursuing Naruto without the threat of an invasion disrupting his plans 170 179 180 181.

Capture and Employment

Naruto and Sasuke locate Orochimaru’s distant laboratory through the tracking mark. Naruto destroys the base, defeats the reanimated Hokage, and stops Orochimaru from fleeing. Sasuke then covers him with additional Flying Thunder God marks 208 209 210.

Orochimaru surrenders techniques and negotiates a place at the Breeding Farm. During questioning, he supplies information about Konoha’s leadership and alleges that Naruto’s parents’ remains may be undergoing experimentation, prompting Naruto to seek verification 211 212 213.

Breeding Farm and Akatsuki Operation

At the farm, Orochimaru develops breeding proposals, supplies Ninjutsu to Sasuke, and presents an expansion plan that Naruto approves. He nevertheless continues covert research into Naruto’s body 214 274 277.

His former Akatsuki membership makes him a useful source of information, although he does not intervene when Asura Path attacks Konoha. Naruto later includes him in the expedition against Akatsuki, where he fights Amegakure ninja using snake techniques 299 301 302.

Parallel-World Counterpart

  • In the parallel world discussed during Naruto’s travels, Sasuke does defect to Orochimaru and trains under him for two years, refining Lightning Release and Cursed Seal abilities. This differs from the main world, where Sasuke rejects Orochimaru’s invitation 136 263 280.
