"Chapter 4: Running into Xiao Wu and Asking for Investment"
"Alright, stop!"
A steady voice sounded from behind them.
Xu Changqing turned his head and happened to see a man walking past him with his hands clasped behind his back.
He was a middle-aged man in his thirties or forties, with a crew cut and a black robe. His face bore a slight weathered look.
"Yu Xiaogang?"
The corner of Xu Changqing's lips curled upward. Watching an anime and personally experiencing its plot were clearly two very different things. The latter was far more interesting. Seeing everything unfold just as he had expected was rather amusing.
Perhaps sensing his gaze, Yu Xiaogang turned to look at him. Their eyes met for an instant before Xu Changqing casually looked away.
A trace of confusion appeared in Yu Xiaogang's eyes.
Just now, it seemed as though he had seen a confidence in that boy's eyes, as if the boy knew everything about him. Or perhaps it was amusement?
"Strange. Was it an illusion?"
Yu Xiaogang shook his head and paid it no further attention. He strode toward the entrance, picked up the Spirit Hall work-study certificate from the ground, and looked it over. Then his gaze shifted to Tang San, who had withdrawn his left hand, before finally settling on Old Jack, who leaned on his cane.
"The certificate is genuine. Old sir, on behalf of the academy, I apologize for what happened just now. Rest assured, you can leave this child in my care." Yu Xiaogang bowed slightly.
"Hello, are you a teacher here? I'm a newly admitted work-study student. This is my work-study certificate." Xu Changqing chose that moment to step forward and hand over his Spirit Hall certificate.
Yu Xiaogang froze. He carefully examined Xu Changqing from head to toe. Dressed like this, he would have believed Xu Changqing was the child of some noble family. Yet he was saying he was a work-study student?
Suppressing his doubts, he accepted the certificate and gave it a glance. His expression shifted slightly in astonishment. Another Innate Full Soul Power?
Had Innate Full Soul Power become so worthless now?
Could those Spirit Hall deacons responsible for martial soul awakenings all be blind?
How could such promising seedlings keep ending up in a tiny place like Notting Academy one after another?
"Hello, may I go in now?"
Xu Changqing's question snapped Yu Xiaogang out of his thoughts. He nodded. "The certificate is genuine, so naturally you may. In a moment, I'll take the two of you to the Academic Affairs Office to register your student identities."
With that, Yu Xiaogang handed the certificate back and revealed what he considered a very kind smile.
Xu Changqing took it and grinned. "No need to trouble yourself, Teacher. I can handle it myself."
Without waiting for Yu Xiaogang's response, Xu Changqing dashed into the academy with his large bundle on his back.
Yu Xiaogang stared blankly at Xu Changqing's retreating figure, which never once looked back. Had he not seemed approachable enough?
Were children these days all this rude?
He wanted to take the boy as a disciple, yet the boy had run off so quickly?
He had not even been given a chance to speak.
Forget it. As long as the boy remained in the academy, it would not be a problem.
He should find a way to win over the Twin Martial Souls in front of him first!
Yu Xiaogang thought to himself.
Meanwhile, Xu Changqing was somewhat lost after entering the academy.
This Notting Junior Soul Master Academy was ridiculously huge.
A junior soul master academy would roughly be equivalent to an elementary school campus on Blue Star in his previous life. Yet an elementary school-sized campus occupied such a vast area. It was truly outrageous.
From this small detail, Xu Changqing personally experienced just how esteemed soul masters were on Douluo Continent.
He had not felt it so deeply when he had only read the novel and watched the anime before.
Sure enough, one had to experience things personally to truly understand them.
This only further strengthened his resolve to become powerful. In this world where soul masters reigned supreme and strength was everything, being a slacker had absolutely no future.
Yet his martial soul was flawed. No matter how hard he worked, he would likely only reach the Soul King rank. The System was probably his only means of turning things around now. He had no idea what functions it possessed, so he would have to study it carefully once he had some free time.
"Excuse me, do you know how to get to the Seventh Dorm?"
Just as Xu Changqing was lost in thought, someone suddenly patted him on the shoulder from behind.
"Fuck!"
Xu Changqing jumped in fright, shifting his feet as he leaped two meters away.
While silently blaming himself for being too careless, he looked toward the person who had spoken.
She was a little girl slightly shorter than him. Her little face was round and rosy-white, with a hint of baby fat. She wore a set of pink clothes and a rabbit hair clip, while her long black hair was tied into a Scorpion Braid that hung down to her legs. She held two sets of dark blue clothing in her hands, which should have been the academy uniforms.
Xiao Wu!
That appearance was far too recognizable. Xu Changqing recognized her at a single glance.
"Sorry, classmate. Did I scare you?" Xiao Wu asked with an embarrassed smile.
Xu Changqing shook his head and smiled gently. "It's alright. I was just thinking about something."
"Hello, my name is Xiao Wu. Wu as in dancing. Are you also a new student this year?" Xiao Wu looked curiously at the huge bundle on Xu Changqing's back, then held out her hand.
Xu Changqing took her hand and nodded. "My name is Xu Changqing. Chang as in staying together forever, Qing as in being lovey-dovey. I'm a work-study student at Notting Academy this year. By the way, Xiao Wu, do you know where the Academic Affairs Office is?"
"Staying together forever, being lovey-dovey... Those words are so ambiguous," Xiao Wu muttered, her cheeks flushing slightly. Who introduced their name like that? It was far too easy to misunderstand.
"I thought you knew the way."
"But it's fine. I love helping people the most. I just came out of the Academic Affairs Office, and I have nothing to do anyway, so I'll take you there." Xiao Wu blinked her large, watery eyes and enthusiastically offered.
"Then I'll have to trouble you."
Xiao Wu waved a finger and smiled brightly, full of life. "No trouble, no trouble. I'm a work-study student too, so we'll be classmates from now on. It's only right that we help each other. Let's go."
With that, she skipped ahead, occasionally spinning in circles. She did not seem able to stay still at all, but she was very cute.
Following behind, Xu Changqing got his first real introduction to the original story's female lead.
She really was just like she had been in the anime. At this point, Xiao Wu was innocent and pure, living with complete sincerity. She was entirely like a human little girl, with a naïve and worldly-unaware nature.
They had only just met, yet she was willing to take him to the Academic Affairs Office, even though she herself was a little dummy who could not find her way around!
Her willingness to help others was a good quality.
At least upon their first meeting, compared to Tang San, who had been ready to use a Silent Sleeve Arrow to take someone's life, Xu Changqing had a much better impression of this playful and adorable original female lead.
With Xiao Wu's help, Xu Changqing quickly registered his student identity at the Academic Affairs Office and received his two sets of academy uniforms. As expected, he was also assigned to the Seventh Dorm.
The two chatted and laughed as they walked along, asking for directions from time to time as they slowly headed toward the dormitory building.
