Background / History

Nagisa kidnapping and border conflict

A Sand Shinobi group abducted Uchiha Nagisa and attempted to take her to the Land of Wind, apparently seeking the Uchiha Clan's Sharingan. Their lack of means to preserve a Sharingan was the reason Nagisa remained alive during the abduction. Fugaku led ten jōnin on the rescue mission. 21

The Sand Shinobi prepared a counterambush with camouflage, traps, and concealed puppets that even the Sharingan could not detect. Although Fugaku's rescue team killed the initial enemy force and recovered Nagisa, Sand reinforcements arrived earlier than expected. 23

During the ensuing pursuit, a Puppet Master used a remotely controlled puppet as a decoy and maintained a separate close-range defensive puppet around his real body. Kyosuke located and killed the Puppet Master after a prolonged exchange. 24 25

The Sand Shinobi also used a micro puppet placed on the captive Ikezu as a delayed ambush. The device fatally wounded both Ikezu and Fugaku and released poison into Ikezu's body, leading to her death. 28

Southwest campaign

Sand forces established fortified positions in a valley and rejected evacuation despite having only slightly more than 300 defenders. Kyosuke's squad infiltrated the position, killed guards, destroyed stored supplies with Exploding Tags, and forced the camp into chaos. 101 102

Sunagakure reinforced the Southwest front with 2,000 ninja under Chiyo and Ebizo, while the Third Kazekage personally arrived to take command alongside Binjing. 126

The Sand Shinobi relied on repeated raiding attacks, projectile barrages, puppet formations, and numerical superiority to pressure Konoha's special units. Their forces also obtained a map of Konoha's traps, allowing them to sustain further offensives despite mounting losses. 127 143

Konoha targeted Sand medical personnel and supplies to exploit Sunagakure's declining capacity to sustain a prolonged war. Orochimaru identified the loss of medical support as a major weakness in the Sand Shinobi war effort. 134 135

Defeat, remobilization, and alliance

Hiruzen Sarutobi, Orochimaru, and Fugaku ultimately broke the main Sand force. The Southwest Army captured 300 Sand soldiers, killed the remaining combatants in the decisive engagement, and drove the survivors into retreat and surrender. 150

After the Third Kazekage disappeared, Sunagakure remobilized on a large scale and formally declared war on Konoha. Its prolonged conflicts left most of its elite combatants dead or incapacitated and cost it more than seventy percent of its standing army. 151 227

Binjing's death at Kyosuke's hands further disrupted the Sand command structure. Chiyo managed to bring the retreating forces back within their encampment perimeter, but the loss severely weakened their ability to continue the campaign. 170

Later, Rasa sought Konoha's assistance when the One-Tail Shukaku escaped into the Land of Wind. Konoha's intervention led to an alliance between the two villages, despite the hostility created by their previous wars. 246 249

Betrayal and final defeat

The Shinobi Sect approached Sunagakure through Mr. Gate, who identified himself as Monzaemon Chikamatsu, the legendary first puppeteer. He offered advanced autonomous-puppet technology in exchange for Sunagakure joining the war against Konoha. 341

Chiyo and Ebizo accepted the offer, and Sunagakure abandoned its alliance with Konoha. The Sand Shinobi subsequently prepared for another campaign under Rasa's leadership. 341 348

Konoha's Southwest Army attacked the Sand encampment after only one day of rest, routing a 2,000-man Sand force and capturing Chiyo during the opening assault. 348

The later arrival of Konoha's Lightning Release Armor unit devastated Sand reinforcements in a canyon; ten armored Uchiha pierced through the formation in under fifteen minutes, and the reinforcement force was nearly annihilated within an hour. 357

Following the war, Sunagakure's upper leadership was eliminated. Uchiha Cho remained in the village as its Konoha-installed leader and used the Rasa Puppet's Gold Dust abilities to keep its economy functioning. 360

Sand Shinobi Puppet Masters employ concealed weapons, defensive constructs, poison, and remote attacks to control engagements from a distance.
