Background / History
Holy Soul Village
Old Jack serves as Holy Soul Village’s chief, receiving a salary from the Heavenly Dou Empire and keeping ordinary reference books at home. He adopts Xia Tianling after the latter arrives in the Douluo Continent. The surname Xia comes from the character on the child’s jade pendant 1.
He also helps support Tang San, providing food when Tang Hao neglects the boy. Old Jack explains spirit awakening and leads Xia Tianling and Tang San to the village’s annual ceremony. After Xia Tianling’s exceptional awakening, he accompanies his grandson to Spirit Hall’s Nuoding City branch 1 2 3.
Life in Nuoding City
Using funds supplied by Ghost Douluo, Su Yuntao buys Old Jack an elegant house in Nuoding City and persuades him to resign as village chief. Although he becomes one of the city’s wealthier residents, Old Jack continues dressing simply and living frugally 6.
For Tang San’s academy enrollment, he arranges transportation, new clothes, bedding, and spending money. When insulting gatekeepers provoke his Spirit Hall guards, Old Jack orders the guards to spare them. The pouch he presses on Tang San contains one hundred Gold Soul Coins—enough for the boy’s food and accommodation throughout five years at the academy 6 7.
Old Jack remains attached to his home village. Even after Xia Tianling’s medicines restore his vigor, he travels back each morning to work his fields rather than adopt aristocratic pastimes 183.
Relocation to Spirit City
Old Jack unexpectedly gains Soul Power during a specially prepared meal. Concerned that acquaintances in Nuoding City might notice this extraordinary transformation, Xia Tianling persuades him to move the entire household to Spirit City. Old Jack reluctantly agrees and hires villagers to maintain his fields 184.
After obtaining his first three rings, he settles into a villa in the residential district reserved for relatives of Spirit Hall’s core personnel. Xia Tianling retains his longtime household staff, sparing Old Jack the distress of dismissing people who have served him for years 185.
Agricultural Research and Public Recognition
Old Jack begins farming at the foot of Douluo Mountain, bringing Hou San and Er Lang with him. In five months, his fields produce more than twice the grain an ordinary farmer harvests from the same acreage in a year. The Elder Council recognizes the potential to support more civilians, troops, and soul masters 239.
Spirit Hall restricts access to the experimental land and establishes a farming research team to assist him. Old Jack later leads a group maintaining experimental fields, finding increasing fulfillment in the work 240 283.
Free seed distribution and coverage in Spirit Hall Monthly spread his reputation across the continent. Commoners call him the God of Agriculture and King of Agriculture. His former wooden home, shared with Xia Tianling, becomes a popular destination in the newly flourishing Holy Soul Town 430.
Appearance
Old Jack’s appearance changes markedly under the effects of Xia Tianling’s medicines and spiritual food 183 184.
- Plain clothing: Continues wearing simple clothes despite his wealth 6.
- Rejuvenated face: Becomes young-looking and handsome enough that he initially struggles to recognize himself in a mirror 184.
- Black beard: His beard returns to black as his body grows younger 321.
Personality
Old Jack is generous without being ostentatious. He supplies Tang San with food and school necessities, spares the academy gatekeepers, and remains reluctant to dismiss his longtime staff even after their abilities become inadequate for his new circumstances 1 6 185.
Farming matters more to him than status or combat strength. He dislikes noble entertainments, feels uncomfortable after a day away from the fields, and chooses soul skills according to their agricultural usefulness rather than conventional combat synergy 183 185 239.
Rejuvenation also restores his youthful boldness and fiery temper. Protective of Tang San, he publicly berates Tang Hao despite knowing that the man is the Clear Sky Douluo. His worldly experience makes him skeptical of Tang Hao’s awkward claims to have become a responsible father 184 321.
Abilities & Skills
Hoe Martial Soul
Originally an ordinary, rusty hoe without usable Soul Power, his martial soul later develops a refined blade emitting Earth Attribute light and a smooth, dark-brown handle 184 437.
- Earth Shaker Hoe / Soil Loosening Hoe: Striking the ground shatters or loosens soil across roughly ten square meters. Originally a restriction-and-control ability, Old Jack repurposes it for cultivation of fields 185.
- Ploughing Hoe: His second skill, adapted from Earth Splitting Hoe for agricultural work 185.
- Wildfire Hoe: His third skill, derived from flame enhancement and selected for farming utility 185.
- Water-spraying fourth skill: Granted by a ten-thousand-year ring and used to water crops. Its formal name is not provided 437.
- Specialization: His first three skills offer little conventional combat synergy but work efficiently together for farming 185.
Farming and Agricultural Research
- Produces more than twice an ordinary farmer’s annual grain yield in a five-month growing period 239.
- Inspires Spirit City residents to reconsider noncombat applications of soul skills 239.
- Leads experimental fieldwork with a dedicated Spirit Hall research team 240 283.
- Gains Soul Power through regular farming despite never taking the initiative to meditate 240.
Rejuvenated Physique and Equipment-Assisted Combat
- Heavenly Treasures and strengthening potions restore his youthful vigor 183.
- By his first ring hunt, his physique is comparable to a Beast Spirit Soul Elder’s, allowing an over-limit first ring 185.
- By Xia Tianling’s later examination, his physical strength exceeds that of a Beast Spirit Soul Emperor 437.
- With six hundred-thousand-year soul bones and Two-Character Battle Armor, his combat power reaches at least Quasi Soul Saint equivalence 438.
- He remains inexperienced and unskilled in fighting, relying on overwhelming attributes and equipment rather than technique 438.
Suspected Divine Fire
Xia Tianling discovers a tiny, bright flame in Old Jack’s Sea of Consciousness and interprets it as a likely embryonic godhood sustained by the Power of Faith. This is a hypothesis, not confirmation of completed godhood 437.
- The flame draws in unfamiliar energy that strengthens Old Jack’s body and transforms his martial soul 437.
- Its appearance coincides with the first harvest from Spirit Hall’s freely distributed seeds and extensive publicity for Old Jack’s team 437.
- Xia Tianling believes it could eventually develop into the God of Agriculture godhood if Old Jack reaches Level 99 and receives sufficient faith 437.
- To protect him, Xia Tianling disguises the flame and temporarily seals Old Jack’s related memories, withholding the discovery even from Zhu Zhuqing and Bibi Dong 437.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Longevity Pill: Consumed during the rejuvenating meal. Designed for mortals and capable of extending an ordinary person’s lifespan by five hundred years 180 184.
- Nine-grade Purple Ganoderma meal and body-strengthening potion: Help fortify his body and trigger his acquisition of Soul Power 184.
- Six Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Bones: Given by Xia Tianling; cover earth, wood, water, light, life, and spiritual attributes, providing twelve skills in total 437 438.
- Two-Character Battle Armor: Given by Xia Tianling and fused alongside the soul bones, greatly enhancing his combat power 437 438.
