Background / History

Horus Heresy

During the Horus Heresy, Fabricator General Kelbor-Hal supported Horus in exchange for the abandonment of restrictive Treaty of Mars clauses and access to the Vaults of Moravec. Opening the vaults released Warp-infused scrapcode into the Martian network, killing countless people and shutting down foundries. Many Mechanicus members joined the rebels and became the Dark Mechanicus 189.

Martian loyalists received assistance from the Caretaker Matrix, which created machine armies and expelled daemons, but they failed to retake Mars during the rebellion. Elsewhere, Mechanicus forces fought alongside the Adeptus Custodes and Silent Sisterhood in the Emperor’s Webway war. Broken servitors and combat machines remained among the battlefield’s casualties 100 135 191.

Contact with the God Chosen

The Players welcomed contact with the Mechanicus as access to another faction and its enhancement services. Their independent engineering soon challenged its restrictions: Dora Workshop produced exoskeleton armor without an STC, and Magos Kolo condemned the equipment as heresy 22 30 31.

Qin Yun used his claimed authority as the Omnissiah’s messenger to compel technological development. Priest Hina began questioning Martian dogma, while Magos Casca embraced the opportunity to create new vehicles. By the reconstruction of Automata, both were exploring technologies beyond their previous doctrinal constraints 35 58 62.

Calixis Rebellion and Forge World Las

Some Mechanicus members joined the Colin Family’s rebellion, weakening the organization’s control over the Calixis Sector. Forge World Las became a major battleground, with loyalist Magos Morio contacting Qin Yun during the reconquest. Disruption of the rebels’ command networks opened their defenses to Imperial assault 122 124 128 129.

After Las was reclaimed, Morio became its overseer for his resistance to the traitors. He later coordinated construction of Automata’s Beacon, sharing its technology with other Forge Worlds in exchange for their participation 156.

Submission of Mars and Reform

Laski arrested Cawl and the Players after their recovery of the Akashic Reader and Caretaker Matrix, accusing them of illegal research into dark technology. Qin Yun subsequently confronted him on Mars and secured his allegiance. Laski accepted an Aquila Medal and pledged Mars’s resources to the Living Saint 191 192.

Competition from Dora Workshop later prompted Morio to organize a petition defending the Mechanicus’s military-supply monopoly. Qin Yun instead pursued marketization with support from Guilliman and Laski. The resulting bill initiated the first Mechanicus reform since the Emperor ascended the Golden Throne; Hina became its earliest industrial pioneer 214 216.

Organization

Hierarchy

Rank / Position Documented Authority or Function
Fabricator General Rules Mars and holds final authority to interpret Martian regulations; Laski uses that authority to endorse Qin Yun’s reforms 191 216.
Archmagos On Mars, Cawl’s authority is described as second only to the Fabricator General; ordinary priests cannot safely defy him 189.
Magos Senior specialists who can oversee factories, Forge Worlds, and major research or production projects 128 156.
Tech-Priest Performs technical work and acquires knowledge under a hierarchy in which senior Magos control access to resources and advancement 66 216.
  • Knowledge-based advancement: Promotion requires mastery of sufficient technology. Rare STC discoveries can provide knowledge valuable enough to accelerate a priest’s rise to Magos 156.
  • Restricted access: Senior Magos guard their discoveries and exchange knowledge at high prices, leaving lower-ranking priests dependent on them 66.
  • Internal factions: Conservatives defend STC restrictions, while radicals such as Cawl welcome challenges to established rules 66 82.
  • Gear Forum: A Beacon-network forum allows members to trade technology and discuss research. Accounts are tied to real identities and ranks 214.

Major Sites

Site Significance
Mars Central repository of Imperial technical knowledge and home of the Solar Fleet, described as the Imperium’s most powerful fleet 189.
Ring of Iron An equatorial megastructure around Mars composed of space stations, void ports, and large shipyards 189.
Forge World Las The Calixis Sector’s most important Forge World, permanently granted to the Mechanicus during the Angevin Crusade. Its three planets’ intersecting orbital paths create gravitational conditions useful for smelting rare metals and alloys 122.
Planet Automata A center of collaboration with Qin Yun and the Players, producing military equipment and hosting the new Beacon and Hina Industrial Group 58 123 156 216.

Doctrine and Reform

STC Restrictions

  • Approved production: Before reform, products required a corresponding STC. Unauthorized innovation could be treated as heresy and provoke a punitive fleet 30.
  • Safety and political control: Restrictions address the danger of Chaos corruption, but also preserve Mars’s dominance because it possesses more STCs than other Forge Worlds 66.
  • Selective enforcement: Mechanicus members secretly research xenos and forbidden technologies while preventing outsiders from doing the same 124.
  • Institutional obstruction: Attempts to reverse-engineer Necron Gauss weapons were hindered by unfamiliar principles, research accidents, and conservative interference 66.

Market-Based Reform

Change Effect
Factory-to-household distribution Weakens senior administrators’ control over industrial resources and creates opportunities for lower-ranking members 216.
Market competition Ends the protected supply monopoly; Forge World products must compete with Player factories and Hive City industries 216.
Independent enterprises Allows ambitious Magos and Tech-Priests to establish their own groups, following Hina’s example 216.
Martian endorsement Laski and other Martian Archmagos decline to lead opposition after receiving valuable technologies from Qin Yun 216.

High-ranking Forge World councils and supervisors oppose the reforms because they threaten their profits and authority. Lower-ranking members are less unified: some publicly comply with their superiors while covertly increasing pressure for change 216.

Appearance

  • Crimson robes: Worn by Tech-Priests, including former Mechanicus members employed by Dora Workshop 147 213.
  • Extensive augmentation: Hina’s Magos body contains dense cables and mechanical structures, with a miniature fusion reactor replacing the heart’s position 147.
  • Specialized body configurations: Cawl possesses numerous cybernetic limbs; Laski moves his immense body on a heavy tank chassis 189 191.

Abilities & Skills

Engineering and Manufacturing

The Mechanicus supplies the technical implementation behind many Player-designed machines 74.

  • Develops and produces the Casca Tank and Tyreen Transport after testing 58.
  • Manufactures power armor, bolters, and chainswords for newly transformed Players 47 48.
  • Supports engineering vehicles equipped for mining, cutting, welding, and maintenance 74.
  • Inspects completed warships, applies gear symbols, and blesses their machinery before delivery to the Imperial Navy 123.
  • Assists Dora Workshop and Xi Ling with research into Necron dimensional technology, jumps, and advanced materials 181.

  • Planetary conversion: Clears Ork spores and structures before replacing them with human settlements 289.

Golden Throne Maintenance

The Mechanicus maintains the Golden Throne without understanding its underlying operating principles 187.

  • Replaces damaged parts and adds compensatory machinery when replacements cannot match the originals 187.
  • Its accumulated repairs make the Throne increasingly bloated and inefficient; by 999.M41, failure is becoming unsustainable 187.
  • An attempted solution involving trade with Commorragh costs tens of billions of lives and nearly exposes the Emperor’s gene samples to theft 187.
