Background / History

Before his mortal wounding, Guilliman entrusted Belisarius Cawl with two long-term measures: the creation of stronger Astartes through the Primaris project and a suit of armor capable of purging Warp corruption. He also arranged for a stasis device so that a catastrophic injury would not leave him vulnerable to Chaos manipulation 83.

Fulgrim later struck Guilliman in the neck, leaving him suspended in stasis for ten thousand years. During this period, he remained in the Primarch Sanctuary on Macragge, with the Emperor's Sword laid across his knees and the fatal wound still visible 83.

Cawl and Yvraine's resurrection effort succeeded when the Armor of Fate was fitted around him amid a Chaos assault. Guilliman awakened, assessed the battlefield almost immediately, and led the defense of Macragge against the invading traitors 83 84.

The state of the Imperium after his return deeply unsettled him. He learned of its fanaticism, corruption, ignorance, and galaxy-wide suffering, while also discovering that the Emperor endured a damaged, uncertain existence upon the Golden Throne 87 88 140.

After securing Ultramar, Guilliman departed on a perilous pilgrimage to Terra. There he resumed the offices of Lord Commander of the Imperium and Chairman of the Council, pushed the Great Production Edict, and began organizing the Indomitus Crusade 123 140.

Appearance

Guilliman is a towering Primarch usually seen in cerulean Armor of Fate. Before his resurrection, he appeared pale and still, with a visible wound in his neck; later, Euten notes gray hairs showing the strain of his burdens 83 303.

  • Wears the cerulean Armor of Fate, which was built to preserve his life and purge harmful Warp energy 83 273.
  • Bears a long-healed but still painful neck wound inflicted by Fulgrim 83 218.
  • Carries the Emperor's Sword and uses the Gauntlets of Ultramar in combat 83 133.
  • During his Avenging Son awakening, his eyes burn with rage and flaming scarlet wings manifest behind him 297.

Personality

Guilliman is disciplined, politically capable, and exceptionally conscious of duty. After awakening into a nightmare of war and institutional decay, he rapidly resumes responsibility despite privately carrying grief and pessimism. His conversations leave allies encouraged because he carefully masks his distress with sincerity and optimism 87.

He favors pragmatic reform and long-term planning. He is wary of uncontrolled technological progress, warning Qin Yun that greed and impatience can turn even visionary projects into disasters. His administrative ability allows him to process immense numbers of military and political matters simultaneously 99 234.

His composure has limits where his adoptive mother Euten is concerned. Learning that Lorgar held her soul drove him into an irrational rescue attempt; her apparent destruction then awakened the furious, unstable Avenging Son within him 296 297. Following his recovery, Euten's guidance teaches him that anger must be understood and controlled rather than allowed to consume him 303.

Abilities & Skills

Primarch Physiology

As a Primarch, Guilliman possesses overwhelming physical strength, speed, resilience, and combat perception.

  • Bolter fire from Chaos Space Marines cannot penetrate his armor in battle 84.
  • His strikes are too fast for enhanced Chaos warriors to track, and he can kill armored Terminators with a gauntleted blow 84.
  • He can fight Daemon Primarchs including Fulgrim, Magnus, Angron, and Lorgar 133 136 297 337.
  • The Emperor's protection renders some of Magnus's flesh-and-soul curses ineffective 136.

Strategic Command and Administration

Guilliman's defining practical strength is coordinating war and governance on a massive scale.

  • Organizes counterattacks, defensive positions, retreats, and battlefield fire concentration under extreme pressure 126 137.
  • Can deduce battlefield conditions while simultaneously handling roughly a thousand administrative tasks 234.
  • Reclaimed authority on Terra, issued the Great Production Edict, and prepared the Indomitus Crusade 140 186.
  • Balances military mobilization against bureaucratic and conservative opposition, including resistance to Cawl and the Primaris project 158.

Avenging Son

Guilliman's true Warp essence is described as the Emperor's pure fury: an embodiment of revenge and war rather than merely a gifted administrator.

  • Awakens after Euten's soul is shattered by Lorgar 296 297.
  • Incinerates daemons and Chaos warriors with an aura of rage; hostile sorcery fails to harm him in this state 297.
  • Slays Angrath, Khorne's chief daemon, in two strikes 296.
  • Forces the Chaos-blessed Lorgar back and compels Lorgar, Magnus, and Fulgrim to flee 297.
  • Limit: The awakening initially overwhelms his reason, leaving him uncontrollable until Qin Yun and Lion El'Jonson subdue him 297.

Diplomacy and Political Acumen

Guilliman can use warmth, humor, and careful framing to lower tensions without surrendering authority.

  • Builds trust with Imperial and Aeldari representatives after his resurrection 87.
  • Treats Qin Yun as a valued adviser and discusses sensitive subjects such as the Second Imperium, Primaris Marines, and the Pharos Beacon with him 92 99.
  • Attempts to reconcile with the Space Wolves by presenting himself as their “uncle” through Leman Russ, rather than relying on force 246.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Armor of Fate — Cerulean power armor forged by Cawl; sustains Guilliman after his mortal injury and purges Warp energies 83 273.
  • Emperor's Sword — The Emperor's blade; burns with annihilating fire and permanently destroys daemonic essence, preventing resurrection 83 297.
  • Gauntlets of Ultramar — Command gauntlets used to parry weapons and strike down heavily armored foes 84 133.
  • Macragge's Honour — His flagship and a major command center; later equipped with a beacon for real-time communication 115 245.

Relationships

  • The Emperor — His father. Guilliman seeks his guidance but is devastated by the Emperor's suffering and limited ability to communicate 87 88 140.
  • Lady Euten — Adoptive mother and the person most able to reach him emotionally. Her apparent death triggers his Avenging Son awakening; her returning will later helps him regain control 296 303.
  • Qin Yun / the Living Saint — Trusted ally, adviser, and battlefield partner. Qin Yun repeatedly helps Guilliman make political and strategic decisions, supports him against traitor Primarchs, and assists in subduing his berserk state 87 99 133 297.
  • Lion El'Jonson — Loyal brother and frequent ideological counterweight. The Lion criticizes Guilliman's recklessness but still comes to his aid; together with Qin Yun, he restrains Guilliman after Dalok 296 297 303.
  • Marneus Calgar — Chapter Master of the Ultramarines. Calgar initially distrusts the resurrection party but remains deeply devoted to Guilliman's protection and later receives delegated authority over Ultramar 82 83 115.
  • Belisarius Cawl — The Archmagos entrusted with the Primaris project and Armor of Fate. Guilliman protects Cawl's work from conservative opposition 83 92 158.
  • Fulgrim — Traitor brother whose wound placed Guilliman in stasis. Guilliman seeks vengeance against him and wounds him severely with the Emperor's Sword 83 133 134.
  • Magnus — Traitor brother and recurring adversary. Guilliman withstands his sorcery and battles him during the pilgrimage to Terra 136 137.
  • Lorgar — Traitor brother who weaponizes Euten's soul to break Guilliman. Their confrontation unleashes Guilliman's Avenging Son aspect 296 297.
  • Angron — Traitor brother whom Guilliman later defeats by restoring his suppressed humanity, allowing Angron to defy Khorne 337.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Resurrection of Macragge

Guilliman's impending return motivates Qin Yun to reinforce Macragge, since a failed resurrection would leave the Imperium without its key loyalist Primarch. Cawl completes the resurrection with the Armor of Fate, and Guilliman personally annihilates the Chaos attackers threatening the sanctuary 72 83 84.

Rebuilding Ultramar and Reaching Terra

Following Macragge's defense, Guilliman confronts the Imperium's decay, receives a limited vision from the Emperor, and stabilizes Ultramar. He then launches the Pilgrimage Crusade toward Terra despite Warp storms, disappearances, and coordinated attacks by Magnus, Angron, and Fulgrim 88 115 123 133.

Regent of the Imperium

At Terra, Guilliman reclaims the position of Lord Commander and leads institutional and military reform. He pushes for the Primaris Marines, organizes the Indomitus Crusade, suppresses obstruction by powerful interests, and struggles with the burdens of regency 140 143 158 245.

Dalok and the Avenging Son

Lorgar lures Guilliman to Dalok with Euten's captured soul. Guilliman ignores warnings and attacks the trap, but Euten destroys herself rather than let him kneel to Chaos. His grief awakens the Avenging Son, allowing him to overwhelm Lorgar and terrify even the Chaos Gods before Qin Yun and the Lion forcibly stop him 296 297.

War Against Angron

After recovering control, Guilliman later faces Angron in a battle of immense force. Rather than simply killing him, Guilliman restores Angron's humanity, enabling Angron's final act of defiance against Khorne 337.

Trivia

  • Guilliman founded the Second Imperium during the Horus Heresy, a politically dangerous secret he fears could be used to undermine his authority 92.
  • He originally ordered Cawl to develop the Primaris Marines long before his mortal wounding 83.
  • He deliberately allows the God Chosen to form a protective screen around him during Primarch-level battles because they can return after death, unlike his irreplaceable Astartes sons 132.
  • He becomes noticeably jealous when Qin Yun gives Lion El'Jonson new armor and a sword, despite Guilliman's Armor of Fate being more valuable as life-sustaining equipment 273.
