Nature
- The Warp is a realm shaped by the emotions and souls of material beings. Strong emotions can create echoes with consciousness—daemons—and an emotion that leaves a permanent mark can become a god. 283
- Its authorities originate in the emotions and needs of sentient life, rather than belonging inherently to the gods who wield them. 283
- The Warp was not portrayed as purely evil: Players describe it as a chaotic realm capable of being shaped toward either order or corruption. 268
- Warp energy can empower psychic abilities, faith-based powers, daemons, and Chaos entities, but excessive exposure destabilizes reality and endangers both minds and machines. 121 152 338
Manifestations and Hazards
- Warp storms — Severe storms weaken material laws, distort time, impede navigation, and can mutate ships and crews into flesh-covered monstrosities. 30 123 152
- Rifts and incursions — Tears between reality and the Warp allow daemons, psychic phenomena, and corrupting energies into realspace. 44 205
- Warp beasts — Predatory creatures that inhabit thin points between realms; their forms vary, though they commonly possess numerous red, malicious eyes. 184
- Corruption — Warp exposure can produce mutations, madness, psychic backlash, possession, and the transformation of vessels or warships into Chaos abominations. 6 152 208
- Time distortion — Time can flow differently in Warp anomaly zones; during the Siege of Terra, the Sol System's displacement into the Warp halted time and obscured Terra from Guilliman's relief force. 30 162
Travel and Containment
| Method | Relationship to the Warp | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Warp travel | Ships tear through the veil into the Immaterium. | Safe entry is normally made from a Mandeville Point; travel requires protection against Warp intrusion. 74 101 |
| Geller Field | Creates a bubble of reality by using Psykers' dreams as an anchor. | Player engineers developed rotating Psyker “battery packs” to reduce the strain on the Psykers maintaining it. 101 |
| Star Gate | Establishes safer, faster Warp routes between gates. | Humanity's Star Gate 1.0 sends enemy vessels that attempt to use it into the deep Warp. 156 159 |
| Webway | Avoids direct Warp travel through a separate dimension between reality and the Warp. | More advanced than Star Gates, though much of its ancient structure was damaged or corrupted. 156 219 |
| Blackstone | Can suppress or amplify Warp influence. | Chaos forces use reversed Blackstone fields and constructs to widen rifts or sustain rituals. 196 298 |
History
The Old Ones reportedly shaped the Warp as part of a defense against the Extragalactic Old Gods. Their plan involved creating Warp life and nine powerful gods that could resurrect endlessly and draw upon faith and souls. The project failed: the eight-pointed artifact at its center became corrupted, and its gods transformed into the Chaos Gods. 321 322
Following the opening of the Great Rift, Warp activity intensified across the galaxy. Psykers and mutants became more common, storms disrupted time and travel, and Chaos forces repeatedly used breaches, rituals, and Blackstone constructs to pull worlds and fleets toward the Immaterium. 121 123 196
The completed Aetheric Phase Engine later began siphoning Warp energy. Its operation weakened daemons, psychic powers, and advanced technologies while making physical laws unusually dominant; Moro Planet became an Aetheric black hole that drained daemonic forces. 332 338 339
After the Chaos Gods were defeated, Qin Yun and the Emperor recovered and repositioned the Chaos Star, halted the Engine's extraction, and repaired the temporal damage to restore the Empyrean. To prevent another Chaos-dominated age, Qin Yun divided the realm into the Celestial Realm, which receives noble emotions, and the Abyss, which receives negative emotions; both were given conversion channels to return their energy to the material universe. 341
Relationship with Chaos
- Chaos Gods — Their authority and existence depend on Warp energy, emotions, and belief. They became progressively weaker as the Aetheric Phase Engine drained the Immaterium. 283 340 341
- Daemons — Warp-born entities sustained by the realm's energy. As the Warp thinned, many struggled merely to maintain existence, fled, pledged themselves to the Chaos Gods, or were hunted by Imperial Players. 340 341
- Chaos Star — An Old Ones artifact described as the foundation of the Warp and the basis for the Chaos Gods' birth. Its recovery enabled the final war against the Four Gods. 341
- Blackstone — A mineral with a dual Warp-suppressing and Warp-amplifying nature, making it vital to both Imperial defenses and Chaos rituals. 196 298
Relationship with Humanity
- Qin Yun — Uses Faith Points and the Emperor's power to purify Warp corruption, wield psychic attacks, purge Warp power with Soul Storm, and gain strength in Warp-saturated areas. 5 132 227
- The Emperor — His power protects the God Chosen, supports Warp-based technologies such as Star Gate 1.0, and is central to the postwar restructuring of the Empyrean. 121 159 341
- God Chosen / Players — Their fate threads are obscured by higher-dimensional interference and linked only to Qin Yun. They resist ordinary Chaos corruption, disrupt daemonic curses and blessings, and can transform hostile Warp power into emotions such as revenge. 186 286 291
- Aetheric Phase Engine — Drains Warp energy into crystals, suppressing Chaos but also causing psychic and technological deterioration where the Warp becomes depleted. 332 338
- Webway — A protected transit network distinct from the Warp, pursued by humanity to reduce its dependence on dangerous Warp travel. 156 323
