Background / History

Odin ruled Asgard after overthrowing his brother Cul Borrson, the brutal former All-Father known as the Serpent. Unable to kill Cul because of a World Tree prophecy that Thor would die alongside him, Odin sealed Cul instead and assumed the throne with the support of gods opposed to Cul's reign. 172

In pursuit of knowledge and power, Odin sacrificed an eye and hung himself from the World Tree, receiving rune knowledge and a portion of the Tree's power. He later created Rune stones derived from that knowledge and passed down the Power of Odin through Asgard's royal line. 212 213

When Angela was believed dead after being taken to the Haven Angel Realm, Odin severed that realm from the World Tree in fury. The former Ten Realms subsequently became the Nine Realms. 146

Odin spent centuries preparing contingencies for Ragnarok. These included Thor's exile to Midgard to learn humility, Baldur's apparent death and survival in Hell, the sealing of Hela, and the dispersal of his descendants across different realms. 163 183 210 He also monitored Thor's exile through his ravens, Thought and Memory. 167

Odin awoke early from Odin Sleep to address the crises surrounding Baldur, Hela, and the Serpent. Personality

Odin is pragmatic, calculating, and willing to make severe sacrifices for Asgard's survival. He sealed his own brother rather than kill him, allowed Baldur's suffering in Hell to preserve a contingency for Ragnarok, and imprisoned Hela after deciding her ambition had become uncontrollable. 172 210 244

Despite his harsh methods, Odin is deeply invested in his family and kingdom. Angela's return motivated him to recover from Odin Sleep unusually quickly, while the end of Ragnarok moved him to tears and convinced him to entrust more of Asgard's future to its younger generation. 244 255
