Background / History

Exile to Midgard

Thor was banished to Midgard after attacking Jotunheim, killing Frost Giants, and nearly provoking a war between realms. Odin sealed most of his divine power and made him unable to lift Mjolnir. Shortly after arriving, Thor was incapacitated by a mortal stun gun and hospitalized in New Mexico. 164 167

Li Wei found Thor in the hospital and used emotion manipulation to lower his apprehension while reinforcing his honor, courage, confidence, and desires. Thor accepted Li Wei as a friendly Midgardian sorcerer. 164

Friendship with Li Wei and the Loss of Mjolnir

Li Wei took Thor to a bar, where Thor spent three days drinking heavily and socializing. Thor considered Li Wei a good person and treated him as a genuine friend, unaware that Li Wei was using their prolonged contact to replicate his powers. 165

When Thor reached Mjolnir, he found that he could not move it. Though devastated, he asked Li Wei to try, trusting that a worthy friend was preferable to leaving the hammer abandoned. Mjolnir instead recognized Li Wei as its new master. Thor ultimately accepted that Odin wanted him to learn humility through life as a mortal. 167

Staying on Earth

After Loki's deception was exposed, Thor chose to remain in Midgard to learn more about its people and its hidden powers. He regarded Li Wei as one of the strong individuals he needed to understand. 170

Thor remained on Earth with Jane Foster and spent much of this period drinking, boasting, and pursuing relationships rather than actively working to reclaim Mjolnir. Odin continued to watch him through ravens, preventing his exile from becoming completely directionless. 179 213 219

Return to Asgard

While protecting civilians in New York, Thor was shot by gangsters and left injured in the street. Li Wei confronted him about what he had learned during his exile; Thor answered that he had learned, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Thor subsequently regained his powers and returned to Asgard with Jane through the Bifrost. 221
