Background / History
Zhang Sanfeng founded the Wudang Sect and became one of the Central Plains martial world's foremost figures. His master, Jueyuan, recited the Nine Yang Divine Manual on his deathbed; Zhang later developed the Tai Chi Pure Yang Limitless Technique from its essence, retaining its strengths while discarding its flaws. 95
Before Chen Xiaofan's arrival, Zhang worried that Wudang lacked a successor capable of sustaining the sect after his death. Though he valued the Wudang Seven Heroes, he believed none could reach his level. 94 311
Yu Lianzhou brought Chen Xiaofan to him after recognizing the child's extraordinary ability. Zhang tested Chen with Tai Chi Swordplay and was shocked to find that Chen had reconstructed the complete art from its simplified Wudang branch. He accepted Chen as his final disciple, placing him in the same generation as the Wudang Seven Heroes. 82
Appearance
Zhang Sanfeng is an elderly, immortal-like Daoist with white hair and beard, usually dressed in white and carrying a horsetail whisk. 82 294
- His residence sits at Mount Wudang's highest point, amid scenery described as possessing an immortal aura. 82
- When demonstrating the Tai Chi Pure Yang Limitless Technique, his aged face becomes flushed and vital, restoring an appearance close to his physical prime. 95
- Chen Xiaofan's medicinal treatment later removes his chronic ailments and leaves him ruddy, agile, and vigorous. 307 309
Personality
Zhang Sanfeng is discerning and unusually humble for a martial-arts patriarch. Rather than resent Chen Xiaofan's ability to surpass him in martial-arts creation, he openly acknowledges that his disciple's improvised techniques exceed arts Zhang spent years developing. 95
He is deeply invested in Wudang's future. His concern over the sect's succession drives his decision to nurture Chen, grant him authority, and eventually entrust Mount Wudang to him. 94 310 311
He is also protective and respectful toward Chen. Zhang expels a guardian elder who obstructs Chen's access to the Scripture Depository, but refrains from prying into the source of Chen's later growth, considering fortuitous encounters personal matters. 104 186
Abilities & Skills
Land Immortal Cultivation
Zhang is one of the martial world's highest-level combatants, reaching the Peak Land Immortal realm after observing Chen Xiaofan's battle with Tianshan Child Elder. 91
- His aura after the breakthrough is compared to a divine mountain, and his disciples immediately recognize that he has entered a higher realm. 91
- His Lightness Skill once allowed him to rise roughly twenty meters above the ground and remain airborne for about half the time needed to brew tea. 460
- Even as a senior Land Immortal, he cannot match Chen Xiaofan's immortal-level flight or later cultivation. 97 460
Tai Chi Swordplay
Zhang is the founder of the complete Tai Chi Swordplay, though he initially taught Wudang disciples only a simplified branch due to the original art's difficulty. 82
- The complete art combines immense offensive power with health-preserving effects that nourish the internal organs, promote blood flow, and extend longevity. 82
- Chen Xiaofan astonishes Zhang by deducing and performing the complete form from the incomplete branch taught by Yu Lianzhou. 82
Tai Chi Pure Yang Limitless Technique
Zhang's supreme internal-energy art originated from Jueyuan's transmission of the Nine Yang Divine Manual. 95
- It can drive internal energy to an exceptionally high state and temporarily restore the practitioner to peak vitality. 95
- Zhang keeps the technique in his memory rather than a written manual because ordinary Wudang disciples cannot comprehend it. 95
- His demonstration enables Chen Xiaofan to master the technique, comprehend the Tai Chi Undying Divine Skill, and derive the Immortal Ascension Method. 95
Wudang Cotton Palm
Zhang teaches the Wudang Cotton Palm directly through demonstrations before allowing disciples to study written copies. 92
- A strike can reduce rock to flying dust. 92
- Chen Xiaofan uses its principles to create more than a hundred derivative martial arts, each of which Zhang judges comparable or superior to the original palm art. 94
Teaching and Sect Stewardship
Zhang is an attentive instructor who repeatedly demonstrates techniques until his disciples understand them. 94
- He rewards Chen Xiaofan with one hundred Nine Yuan Pills after Chen's battle inspires Zhang's breakthrough. 91 92
- He grants Chen unrestricted access to the Scripture Depository through a sect token. 104
- He arranges public martial-arts events to establish Chen Xiaofan's reputation as Wudang's new leader. 322 325
