"We didn't. The kingdom's high-tier spellcasters weren't as numerous as Professional Soldiers..." Roland shook his head with a sigh.

"Nothing, nothing!" Realizing he had misspoken, Roland promptly shut his mouth. It was fine for his subordinates to call Archbishop Charlie Pross a charlatan, but as the monarch, he could not be too openly biased. No matter what, that charlatan was still a bona fide cardinal archbishop of the Dragon God Temple. As one of the Temple's most capable enforcers and a leading loyal hound of the Empire, Roland needed to avoid terms that could invite misunderstanding. After all, those above set the example for those below. It would be troublesome if someone took it seriously!

No matter how stubborn Lavien was, he could sense fate's favor toward this not-entirely-legitimate King of Lagrange. If the dragons and high-tier troops from before could be explained as the Empire's legacy and foundation, then these rare resources that kept appearing as though Roland had automatic looting enabled made Lavien see him in a new light. Perhaps this man truly was destined by heaven?
