Background / History

Aizen began as a commoner soul and rose through the Soul Society to become Captain of the Fifth Division. His ascent exposed him to the corruption of the Five Noble Clans, Central 46, and the Gotei 13’s role as their enforcement arm. He came to view the existing order as a stagnant system built to serve nobles rather than the three realms. 265

While publicly acting as a calm, scholarly captain, Aizen secretly pursued Hollowfication research. His experiments caused multiple captains to disappear and led to Kisuke Urahara and Yoruichi Shihōin becoming scapegoats and fleeing the Seireitei. 3 20

Before his rebellion became public, nearly all of Seireitei—including Captain-Commander Yamamoto—had already fallen under Kyōka Suigetsu’s hypnosis. Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tōsen were his known operatives within the Gotei 13, though Gin’s true objective was revenge for Rangiku Matsumoto. 19 20

Li Yue’s chat group gave Aizen foreknowledge of his possible future defeat, Yhwach’s return, and the Soul King Palace’s secrets.
