Drawing conclusions from a pile of abstract signals was the work of genuine experts and scholars, and evidently, even the real scholars were currently at a complete loss over these signals.

"They just look like random-intensity 'tremors,'" Morris said, standing beneath the lamp as he spread a long strip of paper tape across the table. He tried to find a pattern in the jumps of the curve, frowning thoughtfully. "We could convert the amplitude of each tremor into different numbers or 'breakpoints' of varying lengths, but it would be like some kind of cipher... Without the corresponding 'codebook,' there's no way to understand what these tremors mean."

"Since the first time we received these signals, scholars have tried converting them into all kinds of forms," Lucretia said from nearby. "Including sound—after converting these tremors into electrical signals and feeding them directly into playback equipment, they sounded like some sort of continuous, low moaning or 'murmuring,' but they didn't actually carry any meaning. We also tried converting them into images, but that approach has made no progress so far."

"We can't rule that out," Lucretia said with a nod. "The research station has a set of highly sensitive backup recording devices. Not long ago, one of them also received a weak signal from the direction of Phenomenon 001's main structure. We have reason
