Background / History
Shangguan Xiyun returned from her maternal family after attending her grandfather’s funeral in her mother’s stead. On the journey home, the Fierce Wind Bandits attacked her escort. Her guards were killed, and Zhu Han sacrificed himself to give her time to flee into the mountains. 5
Alone in the fog-covered forest, Xiyun was saved from pursuing bandits by Li Yan. Though initially terrified by his disheveled appearance and methods, she asked him to escort her home, identifying herself as the Shangguan Family’s third young miss. She secured his aid by promising a high-grade cultivation method as payment. 6 9
Li Yan’s killing of the bandits’ Third Boss, Xu Sanqiang, and Second Boss, Yuan Feipeng, made Xiyun a continuing target of the Fierce Wind Bandits. She warned Li Yan about the bandits’ leadership and helped him understand basic cultivation requirements, despite not practicing martial arts herself. 9 10
After her brothers Shangguan Feiyun and Shangguan Liuyun arrived, Xiyun returned safely to Dongjiang City. The Shangguan Family honored her promise to Li Yan by granting him the Flower Cultivation and Leaf Nurturing Art. 12 14
As Huang Lingyan’s campaign against the Shangguan Family intensified, Xiyun became both a hostage target and a political pressure point. She was hidden or moved for protection, then participated in an arranged “kidnapping” intended to mislead the City Lord’s faction and buy her family time. Li Yan ultimately rescued her before she could be delivered to the Fierce Wind Bandits. 20 38 47 50
Appearance
Xiyun is described as delicate and exceptionally beautiful, with her appearance considered outstanding even beyond Dongjiang City. 41 59
- Her beauty was a central motive behind Xu Sanqiang’s and Wang Dingtian’s attempts to seize her. 5 41
- She can appear disheveled after captivity or flight, but was noted to have no external injuries when presented before Dongjiang City’s citizens. 47
- She visibly blushes in intimate or embarrassing situations involving Li Yan. 7 49
Personality
Xiyun begins as sheltered and frightened by the brutality of the Fierce Wind Bandits, having grown up protected by her father and brothers. Even so, she chooses to flee after Zhu Han’s sacrifice and quickly learns to act decisively when her survival depends on it. 5 6
She is outspoken, sharp-minded, and more politically perceptive than Shangguan Feiyun initially realizes. She accurately predicts that Huang Lingyan will use the public uproar around Li Yan to consolidate Dongjiang City’s other forces against the Shangguan Family. 24
Her temperament is notably fiery. When paraded before the citizens of Dongjiang City, she condemns their ingratitude toward the Shangguan Family rather than pleading for herself. 47 48
Though she develops feelings for Li Yan, she does not force a confession or ask him to abandon his ambitions. She instead keeps her feelings private and hopes that he will return safely. 15 59
