Background
Kazuma was a sixteen-year-old Japanese boy who died while returning home after buying the first edition of an online game. He frames the incident ambiguously as either dying from fright or bravely saving someone, and considers it important that he died outdoors rather than as a shut-in. 195
During his reincarnation, Aqua mocked him while presenting his choices for a powerful ability or item. Angered, Kazuma chose Aqua herself and forced the goddess to accompany him to the new world. He expected her divine status to make her an exceptional asset, but quickly found their partnership contentious. 195
Soon after arriving, Kazuma met another Japanese arrival, Natsuki Subaru. Their physical contact manifested identical clock patterns on their right hands, eventually leading them to Chu Ke's Exchange Space. 195 196 At the Adventurers Guild, Kazuma's attributes proved largely average, frustrating his expectation of receiving a protagonist-like cheat. He nevertheless registered as an Adventurer and began working toward an adventuring life. 196
Chu Ke later gave Kazuma and Subaru access to cross-world travel and an exchange system fueled by Soul currency. Kazuma used his initial Soul Coin to claim a special revolver, then entered the r0 World with Subaru. 198 Their first confrontation with the Gut Hunter Elsa ended in the deaths of Kazuma, Subaru, and the silver-haired spirit user calling herself Satella, revealing their shared reset mechanism. 199 200 202
After several attempts, Kazuma and Subaru used their retained knowledge to gather intelligence, prepare traps, and drive Elsa away. Kazuma's Steal became decisive in the encounter, though it repeatedly targeted Elsa's underwear and clothing before successfully depriving her of weapons. 204 206
Personality
Kazuma approaches unfamiliar worlds through game logic. He treats guild registration, item selection, combat routes, and cross-world missions as RPG systems to be analyzed and exploited. He carefully weighs card costs, identifies potential allies as assets, memorizes battle sequences after resets, and prioritizes information before confronting stronger opponents. 198 204 209
He is proud, competitive, and highly sensitive to evidence that he is not the “special” protagonist. Aqua's overwhelming attributes, Subaru's apparently unique skill column, and the discovery that Subaru shares the reset ability each provoke dramatic frustration. 195 196 202
Despite his self-serving language and occasional lewd misuse of Steal, Kazuma repeatedly takes responsibility when others are in danger. He agrees to help save Satella and Felt, rescues an impaled survivor from a monster nest, protects Megumin during the Magic Flame Dragon operation, and intervenes to save Yosuke from attackers. 202 215 217 223
Abilities & Skills
Adventurer Training
Kazuma's basic class lets him learn a wide range of skills as he gains points, rather than specializing immediately in a single advanced class. 196 213
- Possesses above-average Intelligence and notably high Luck, despite otherwise ordinary initial attributes. 196
- Learns basic fire, water, and ice magic through party missions. 213
- Uses water magic to gather vapor for an injured survivor. 217
- Uses ice magic to reduce the heat affecting Subaru near the Flame Shrine. 220
- Cannot yet afford the points needed to fully learn Megumin's Explosion Magic. 213
Steal
A thief skill whose success and target are governed by Kazuma's Luck. 206
- Initially failed repeatedly, producing either no result or stolen air. 196
- Can steal items the target considers important, with better Luck increasing the chance of success. 206
- Against opponents far stronger than himself, it may fail to take valuable weapons and instead take clothing or underwear. 206
- Improved enough to repeatedly disarm Elsa and force her retreat. 206
- Its inability to select a specific target creates frequent embarrassing incidents. 211 212
Shared Load/Save
Kazuma shares Subaru's altered return-from-death effect in the r0 World. Chu Ke changed Subaru's original ability into a team-effective power, allowing Kazuma to retain memories through resets. 202 209
- Activates following death or team annihilation. 202
- Lets Kazuma revise plans using knowledge gained in failed attempts. 203 206
- Does not function in Kazuma's original world, leaving him vulnerable during missions elsewhere. 210
- Kazuma initially believed it was his personal cheat and was devastated to learn Subaru shared it. 202
Tactical Planning
Kazuma compensates for limited raw power through analysis, preparation, and team coordination.
- Uses repeated timelines to map routes, identify opponents, and prepare for encounters. 203 204
- Recognizes Felt's speed and theft ability as potential combat value. 204
- Organizes traps in Rom's yard before Elsa's arrival. 205 206
- Identifies the tactical value of recruiting specialized teammates instead of relying solely on his own abilities. 210 213
- Uses the Rope Master's Phone to summon Megumin when a Universal Signal becomes available at the Flame Shrine. 220 221
Equipment / Items
- Special revolver — An Exchange Space reward with varied special bullets. Its effects can be useful but unpredictable; it produced three Love Potion bullets in succession against a group of thugs. 198 199
- Rope Master's Phone — A purple Exchange item that can summon an agent linked to a sub-device, including across worlds. Kazuma uses it to call Megumin to the Flame Shrine. 209 210 220 221
- Clock imprint — A pattern on the back of his right hand that connects him to the Exchange Space and cross-world missions. 195 196
- Basic magic — Fire, water, and ice spells learned through adventuring. 213
Relationships
- Aqua — The goddess Kazuma chose as his reincarnation “item” in retaliation for her mockery. They constantly argue, but she remains a core party member and High Priest. 195 196
- Natsuki Subaru — Fellow Japanese otherworld traveler and Kazuma's closest tactical partner. They share the Exchange Space, retain memories through the r0 World's resets, and coordinate closely in combat. 195 202 217
- Chu Ke — The god-like operator of the Exchange Space. Chu Ke explains the Soul exchange system, provides cards, and modifies Subaru's reset power so it affects Kazuma as part of the team. 198 209
- Megumin — Crimson Demon Arch Wizard recruited into Kazuma's party. Kazuma values her Explosion Magic despite its one-use limitation and takes responsibility for protecting her during the Magic Flame Dragon mission. 211 213 222
- Darkness — Crusader Knight who joins after witnessing Kazuma's embarrassing Steal incident. Kazuma accepts her despite quickly realizing her combat behavior is unusual. 212
- Shima Yosuke — A fellow Japanese arrival initially calling himself Wolfgang Brad. Kazuma and Subaru rescue him, help him adapt to reality rather than game logic, and work with him against the Magic Flame Dragon. 215 216 224
- The silver-haired spirit user “Satella” — Kazuma and Subaru initially agree to help recover her stolen item. He later learns that “Satella” is a pseudonym that could provoke her if used carelessly. 199 204
- Elsa Granhiert — The Gut Hunter who kills Kazuma's group during their first encounter in the r0 World. Kazuma later uses repeated Steal attempts to disarm and repel her. 200 204 206
Story Role / Major Arcs
