Background & History

Canossa first encounters Rein on a train-bound auction while using the name Madam Vanessa. Dressed in a qipao, she repeatedly probes the guarded young doctor with playful flirtation; his disinterest only makes her more curious. After discovering he genuinely spends his time dissecting corpses, she invites him to accompany her toward the City of Radiance. 40 42

During the journey, Canossa travels with a well-equipped caravan and reveals that she is heading to the City of Radiance on merchant-guild business. When a beast tide attacks the group, she remains composed, suspects magical hypnosis as its cause, and later identifies the unconscious barbarian girl Wudo as a potential connection to the Blackwater Platform. 45 46 50

Canossa subsequently disappears, prompting the Black Gold Merchant Guild to issue an SSS-class mission offering ten billion Liso and a Gold Grade Extraordinary inheritance for information on her whereabouts. 95 She had entered a sinkhole alone in search of the shrine of Morogos, the Great Strength Demon God, where she survives for two months by mapping tunnels, marking routes, and establishing a safe house. 165

Within Morogos’s temple, Canossa finds a Divine Power Crystal guarded by eight nearly indestructible Gargoyles.
