Background / History
Defection and Research
Orochimaru is a former Konoha ninja and student of Hiruzen Sarutobi. After defecting, he maintains connections with Danzō, who supplies information about Konoha’s political failures. He also leaves the Akatsuki before Hidan joins the organization 96 106 172.
His research centers on exceptional bodies, bloodlines, and forbidden techniques. A previous encounter with Itachi leaves him humiliated and nearly dead; Kabuto helps him escape. This defeat fuels his desire to obtain Sasuke’s body and Sharingan, both as research material and as a means of confronting Itachi 64 69.
He also investigates the Carefree Pill. Shortly before his encounter with Sasuke, he visits its creator, Xiong Fengshan, to uncover the manufacturing process. Xiong defeats him with a glance through genjutsu and releases him after he pays a one-million-Ryo fine 63.
Chunin Exams and the Konoha Collapse Plan
Orochimaru infiltrates the Chunin Exams as a disguised participant. In the Forest of Death, he initially impersonates Sakura, but Sasuke exposes him through a prearranged secret code. Orochimaru then appears as a female Kusagakure ninja and tests Sasuke through intimidation, clones, snake techniques, and close combat 62 63.
His objective is to make Sasuke seek his power, survive the Curse Mark’s side effects, and eventually become a vessel for Living Corpse Reincarnation. Naruto interrupts the battle and overwhelms him, turning the confrontation into a demonstration for Sasuke. Under Naruto’s genjutsu, Orochimaru reveals his body-theft intentions and the Konoha Crush Plan 64 65 66.
Naruto seals the interrogation memories and installs trigger seals. During Orochimaru’s escape, another seal replaces his memories of the preceding hours with fabricated ones, restoring his confidence without his knowledge 66 69.
Orochimaru later tries to force Sasuke to use the Curse Mark through Akado Yoroi’s chakra-draining ability, but Sasuke resolves the encounter with genjutsu instead 83.
During the invasion, Orochimaru holds Hiruzen captive within the Four Violet Flames Formation and summons the reincarnated First and Second Hokage. He treats the attack as both a supposed cure for Konoha’s stagnation and a large-scale test of Impure World Reincarnation. His plan collapses after Naruto defeats the reincarnated Hokage, whose bodies subsequently stop answering Orochimaru’s summons 96 97 105.
Orochimaru attempts to exploit Hiruzen’s affection and guilt by recounting the Hyuga affair and the Uchiha clan’s destruction. Hiruzen ultimately rejects this manipulation and cooperates with Jiraiya to capture him 105 106 107.
Prison Escape and Coerced Service
In Konoha Prison, Orochimaru is suspended by eight hooked chains, covered in wounds, and restrained through sealing techniques and blocked chakra points. Naruto visits while disguised as Uchiha Obito and offers escape in exchange for joining his version of the Eye of the Moon Plan 171.
Orochimaru accepts Hidan as a replacement vessel, intending to fake his death and eventually change bodies again after Living Corpse Reincarnation’s three-year cooldown. Naruto instead permanently seals his soul inside Hidan’s body, making the apparent rescue another form of imprisonment 172.
After transporting him to the Land of Hot Water, Naruto orders Orochimaru to remain publicly dead and assigns Black Mamba to monitor him. Orochimaru fails to detect the soul seal and regards his knowledge of Impure World Reincarnation as his bargaining advantage. Hiruzen later discovers that both Orochimaru and the sealed Hokage bodies have disappeared and attributes the rescue to Obito 173 179.
Renewed Pursuit of Sasuke and Death
From a secluded base in the Land of Fields, Orochimaru investigates the failure of his reanimation technique. Convinced that a subordinate sabotaged it, he conducts a purge that weakens his own forces without identifying a culprit 213 214.
A newspaper report claiming that Itachi defeated Naruto renews his pursuit of Sasuke. Believing Naruto is seriously injured, Orochimaru plans to deploy the Sound Five and additional helpers, possibly joining the abduction himself. Black Mamba refuses his request for outside support 214 215. The report is misleading: the visiting adult Sasuke observes that Naruto shows no injury and suspects he merely played along 206.
Orochimaru subsequently accepts a mission to assassinate the Land of Water’s Daimyo and destroy its governing power structure. Black Mamba supplies the reincarnated First Hokage, whose power Orochimaru uses to devastate the capital. The assassination shocks both ninja and civilian society 229 231 232.
Following Naruto’s apparent death, Orochimaru successfully induces Sasuke to defect. He expects to obtain Sasuke’s body, but Sasuke intends to use him as a test of strength. Orochimaru briefly gains an advantage through experience before Sasuke reveals his already-awakened Mangekyo Sharingan and kills him 232.
Appearance
- Eyes: Golden, snake-like eyes, repeatedly emphasized during his confrontations with Hiruzen 105 106.
- Tongue and mannerisms: A long tongue and habitual lip-licking, often accompanying his appraisal of prospective vessels 62 171.
- Snake forms: Can adopt a serpentine lower body; a white-scaled serpent emerges from his mouth when transferring into Hidan 63 172.
- Female exam vessel: Appears as a straw-hatted Kusagakure kunoichi after abandoning his Sakura disguise 62.
- Hidan vessel: Initially takes over a body with gray swept-back hair and purple eyes. His presence gives it a markedly chilling aura 172 173.
Personality
Orochimaru approaches talented ninja as specimens and potential possessions. Sasuke’s Sharingan, Naruto’s unusual abilities, and the research possibilities of the Uchiha, Senju, and Uzumaki bloodlines repeatedly occupy his attention. Even while Naruto dominates him through genjutsu, fear gives way to excitement at the prospect of studying such power 64 66 172.
He enjoys prolonging his prey’s distress. During his battle with Sasuke, he deliberately allows a Carefree Pill time to work because he prefers an opponent who remains tense, struggles, and gradually loses hope 63.
His confidence is tempered by a strong survival instinct. He retreats when Naruto’s strength and his own depleted chakra make continued combat untenable, bargains when imprisonment leaves him helpless, and restrains his hostility toward Black Mamba when he senses that attacking would end in defeat 65 171 215.
He is also skilled at manipulating emotional attachments and presenting self-interest as a larger cause. His claim that the Konoha invasion was undertaken for the village’s benefit draws on genuine criticism of its stagnation, but also serves his effort to survive capture. Later, his inability to explain the failure of Impure World Reincarnation develops into destructive paranoia 105 106 214.
