Background / History

Jiraiya first encounters Naruto after being caught peeking at a Konoha hot spring. Naruto is initially suspicious of his unfamiliar chakra and “Oil” headband, while Jiraiya is struck by Naruto’s blond hair, blue eyes, extraordinary speed, and resemblance to Minato Namikaze. He identifies himself as the Toad Sage of Mount Myōboku and attempts to justify his voyeurism as research for his writing. 87

Naruto seeks Jiraiya as a master partly because Jiraiya’s status as Hiruzen Sarutobi’s disciple, a Legendary Sannin, and Minato’s former teacher could strengthen Naruto’s claim to become Hokage. Jiraiya tests him by demanding that he learn the Rasengan within a week.
