Background / History
Sasuke entered the Ninja Academy alongside Naruto. Naruto initially viewed him as the story's “protagonist,” but found him approachable beneath his naturally cool demeanor 11 18.
The Uchiha clan was exterminated shortly afterward. Sasuke survived as the clan's sole known survivor and was hospitalized following the massacre; the rogue-ninja notice identified his older brother, Uchiha Itachi, as the perpetrator 18. The loss hardened Sasuke's resolve to gain strength and avenge his family.
Following graduation, Sasuke joined Team 7 under Kakashi Hatake alongside Naruto and Sakura. He rapidly advanced through missions and training, developing his Sharingan, Fire Release, Lightning Release, and Chidori 36 47.
During the Chūnin Exams, Sasuke faced Orochimaru in the Forest of Death. Although he outmaneuvered Orochimaru's Earth Clone and landed several techniques, Orochimaru's experience and resilience overwhelmed him; Naruto ultimately intervened 62 63 64. Orochimaru became fixated on Sasuke as a potential vessel because of his Sharingan and potential Mangekyo Sharingan 64 214 229.
Sasuke later attempted to challenge Shukaku after killing Gaara, but his strongest Fire Release and Chidori techniques could not pierce the Tailed Beast's defenses. Naruto saved him from Shukaku's Tailed Beast Ball, forcing Sasuke to confront the gap between his own strength and Naruto's 108 109.
His pursuit of Itachi continued when Itachi returned to Konoha with Kisame. Sasuke intercepted them with his Three-Tomoe Sharingan, Chidori, and Light Sword, but Itachi defeated him and used Tsukuyomi to reinforce his memories of their past 188 191. Sasuke's desire to awaken the Mangekyo grew after witnessing Itachi's ocular abilities 192.
Appearance
Sasuke is a black-haired boy with dark eyes in his normal state. When his Sharingan is active, his eyes turn scarlet with rotating tomoe 11 41 188.
- Black hair 11
- Scarlet Sharingan eyes, progressing from two to three tomoe 36 57
- Six-pointed-star Mangekyo Sharingan pattern after awakening 232
Personality
Sasuke is competitive, disciplined, and intensely driven by revenge. He repeatedly measures himself against Naruto, becoming restless whenever Naruto's growth exposes a wider difference in their abilities 31 62 96 181.
Despite his cold exterior, Sasuke is pragmatic and capable of cooperation. He provides Naruto with practical advice regarding Karin's situation and works alongside Naruto against opponents including Zabuza and Urashiki 41 68 205. He is also willing to seek guidance when necessary, setting aside Uchiha pride to ask Kakashi how to improve his Sharingan 181.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
Sasuke's Uchiha dōjutsu grants him heightened perception and potent genjutsu.
- Progressed from Two-Tomoe to Three-Tomoe Sharingan through training and combat 36 57.
- Can use genjutsu to incapacitate opponents; his Three-Tomoe Sharingan instantly restrained a Chunin examiner 57.
- Tracks fast taijutsu movements and supports his tactical responses in combat 63.
- Has considerable resistance to genjutsu, nearly resisting Itachi's Mangekyo-powered suppression despite the gap in their ocular abilities 189.
- Awakened a Mangekyo Sharingan, though its unique ocular technique has not been documented 232.
Fire Release
Sasuke is a proficient Fire Release user whose techniques form a major part of his ranged offense.
- Learned and mastered three Fire Release techniques during Team 7's early mission training 36.
- Fire Style: Dragon Fire Technique — Forms a focused, penetrating flame dragon capable of burning through a massive tree 63.
- Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique — Launches a large fireball; Orochimaru countered it with a water barrier 63.
- Fire Style: Phoenix Sage Fire Claw Red — Fires numerous chakra-infused fireballs to target Shukaku's vulnerable areas 108.
- His Fire Release was ineffective against Shukaku's defensive sand 108.
Lightning Release
Sasuke uses Lightning Release for decisive piercing attacks and broad-area suppression.
- Chidori — Learned from Kakashi during Team 7's training period 36.
- Chidori: Sharp Spear / Light Sword — Extends lightning into a blade or spear exceeding ten meters; it can sever giant trees but was insufficient to decisively defeat Orochimaru or harm Shukaku 64 108 188.
- Lightning Release: Thousand Flash — Emits a fan-shaped spread of lightning that incinerated Orochimaru's summoned snakes 64.
- Lightning Release: Gatling — A technique learned from Naruto and used alongside Chidori: Sharp Spear against Rock Lee 91.
Taijutsu and Tactical Combat
Sasuke combines strong fundamentals with calculated use of his dōjutsu and ninjutsu.
- Kakashi assessed his chakra reserves as above average for a Chunin and his fundamentals as solid 29 47.
- Improved his taijutsu under Teacher Leopard's training 63.
- Uses feints, substitution, kunai, and analysis to expose an opponent's real body or create openings 62 63.
- Avoids direct close-quarters exchanges with dedicated taijutsu specialists when ranged techniques are more advantageous 91.
Academic Training
Naruto believes advanced knowledge is necessary for Sasuke to awaken a powerful Mangekyo Sharingan.
- Naruto delivered a mountain of books and instructed Sasuke to begin with calculus 115.
- Sasuke accepted the training despite initial doubts, trusting Naruto and Teacher Leopard's involvement 115.
- He received three years of high-school knowledge through an overnight transfer, leaving him temporarily overwhelmed and in severe pain 182.
Relationships
- Uzumaki Naruto — Teammate, rival, and increasingly trusted friend. Sasuke constantly competes with Naruto, but accepts his help, advice, and training despite being unsettled by Naruto's overwhelming power 31 109 115 181.
- Uchiha Itachi — Older brother and target of Sasuke's vengeance. Itachi was identified as the Uchiha clan's exterminator; Sasuke later confronted him but was defeated by Tsukuyomi 18 188 191.
- Haruno Sakura — Team 7 teammate. Sakura supports and worries for Sasuke, rescues him after his battle with Shukaku, and develops a closer bond with him 62 83 109.
- Hatake Kakashi — Jonin instructor. Kakashi taught Sasuke chakra control, Fire Release, Lightning Release, and Chidori, later offering further guidance on Sharingan development 36 47 181.
- Orochimaru — Enemy who covets Sasuke's Sharingan and body as a vessel. Their Forest of Death battle revealed Sasuke's potential but also Orochimaru's vast advantage in experience and power 62 64 214.
- Uzumaki Boruto — Time-traveling companion from Sasuke's future. They cooperate to protect young Naruto and investigate how changes in the past may affect their world 194 207.
