Nature and Awakening
A Martial Soul is the outward manifestation of a person's inner potential. Jiang Zhen defines its two components as “Martial,” representing power, conquest, and protection, and “Soul,” representing the origin, psyche, and spirit of the self 246.
Martial Souls are normally awakened at age six. In Xi Nan Village, Su Yuntao uses six black stones arranged in a hexagonal magic array to awaken the children’s dormant Martial Souls, then tests their Soul Power with a blue crystal ball 1.
- A Martial Soul's form may be a tool, plant, beast, elemental phenomenon, or another unique manifestation 1 246.
- Innate Soul Power is tested immediately after awakening and determines whether the wielder can begin Soul Master cultivation 1 2.
- A Martial Soul that appears ordinary may conceal exceptional attributes. Jiang Zhen's fist-sized Water Orb was dismissed as a “waste spirit,” yet possessed the Ultimate Water Attribute and Innate Full Soul Power 1 2.
- Before Jiang Zhen's reforms, Martial Soul form and potential were widely treated as bloodline-based inheritances 246.

Cultivation and Development
Soul Rings and Soul Skills
Soul Masters traditionally increase their rank through cultivation, then obtain Soul Rings to gain fixed Soul Skills. This conventional path is effective but heavily reliant on external Soul Beast hunting 99.
- Soul Rings can grant offensive, defensive, enhancement, control, or domain-type abilities 33 56 96.
- Ring compatibility can substantially improve the wielder's control over their Martial Soul's attribute 4 15.
- Soul Rings may also evolve alongside a Soul Master if condensed through internal cultivation rather than acquired externally 244.
- Ah Yin demonstrates that some transformed Soul Beasts can condense their own Soul Rings without hunting Soul Beasts 22 23.
Self-Created Soul Skills
Jiang Zhen considers direct understanding and application of a Martial Soul more important than merely collecting high-level Soul Rings. He argues that most Soul Masters use less than one percent of their Martial Souls' and Soul Power's potential 99.
- Self-Created Soul Skills are developed through personal exploration, precise Soul Power control, and understanding of a Martial Soul's nature 99 101.
- They can be more suited to their creator than fixed skills granted by Soul Rings 99.
- Jiang Zhen develops numerous Water Element forms, including Water Arrows, Water Shields, Water Armor, Water Eyes, Water Ropes, and Water Bridges 6.
- His later Pure Water Phantom Spirit can form autonomous water constructs such as a Water Pattern Leopard 51.
- Dugu Yan begins developing the Emerald Poison Claw by condensing the corrosive poison attribute of her Martial Soul into a stable form 101.
Evolution
Martial Souls are not inherently fixed. They can evolve, mutate, or sublimate through cultivation, insight into higher laws, Immortal Herbs, and deeper compatibility with the wielder's true nature 46 246.
- Jiang Zhen's Water Martial Soul develops from Ultimate Water to include Ultimate Ice after he comprehends the laws of water and ice 28 31 33.
- Dugu Yan's Martial Soul evolves into the Jade Scale Poison Dragon, improving her control over poison and eliminating the inherited backlash of the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor bloodline 46 50.
- Under the reformed system, acquired cultivation and comprehension can allow a Martial Soul to surpass its initial form and limitations 246.
Awakening Rule Reforms
Jiang Zhen alters the rules of Martial Soul awakening across Douluo Star, replacing bloodline determinism with a system centered on individual souls 246.
| Aspect | Previous Understanding | Reformed Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Primary influence on Martial Soul form | Parents' bloodline and inherited Martial Soul templates | The awakener's individual soul traits, life essence, mental characteristics, obsessions, dreams, and personal imprints 246 |
| Role of bloodline | Treated as the decisive source of Martial Soul inheritance | Retained only as a faint tendency or predisposition, never the determining factor 246 |
| Innate quality and Soul Power | Closely tied to inherited lineage | Determined primarily by soul refinement and acquired cultivation 246 |
| Potential for growth | Often viewed as constrained by initial awakening and family inheritance | Can evolve through cultivation, exploration, and comprehension of higher laws 246 |
| Social consequence | Noble descendants held predictable inherited advantages | Commoners may awaken top-tier or embryonic divine Martial Souls, while nobles may awaken ordinary ones 246 |
The reform disrupts clans built around inherited Martial Souls. The Strength Clan, for example, faces a crisis when most of its children fail to awaken the traditionally inherited Mighty Gorilla Martial Soul 248.
Notable Quotes
“A Martial Soul should be the ‘material manifestation of force’ derived from soul power, mental traits, and the essence of life!” 246
“The vast majority of Soul Masters think the path to becoming stronger is through monotonous meditation day after day, absorbing the world's Soul Power to increase their rank, then hunting Soul Beasts to obtain Soul Rings and gain fixed Soul Skills.” 99
