Sandshrew!

Sandshrew had two forms. The other was called Alolan Sandshrew, but Alolan Sandshrew was not Ground Type—it was Ice Type and Steel Type.

Eichi also released Scyther.

"Come out, Scyther!"

Scyther flew out in a fierce pose.

A Xiang said spiritedly, "Scyther? My Sandshrew won't be afraid."

Eichi activated Bug King Eye. The cyan flame within this Sandshrew was only the size of an egg.

Its aptitude was ordinary, and its strength was at beginner level. It was clear that A Xiang was also a novice Trainer.

A faint, nearly imperceptible curve rose at the corner of Eichi's mouth.

A Xiang was the first to order Sandshrew to attack.

"Sandshrew, use Defense Curl!"

Silver radiance began to flow across Sandshrew's body before fading away. Sandshrew's defense began to rise.

Seeing this, Eichi gave Scyther an order as well. "Scyther, use Focus Energy."

While Sandshrew used Defense Curl, Scyther was also using Focus Energy.

Though Eichi's command had come a step later, Sandshrew and Scyther finished using their moves at the same time.

"Scyther, use Quick Attack."

Scyther flew toward Sandshrew like a streak of green lightning.

A Xiang also ordered Sandshrew, "Sandshrew, use Sand Attack."

Just as Scyther was about to close in, Sandshrew began rapidly scraping with its limbs.

Then, sand seemingly appeared from nowhere on the ground, and Sandshrew continuously flung it at Scyther's face.

Scyther used its scythes to shield its face from the sand.

It then tried to press forward and attack Sandshrew, but Sandshrew kept using Sand Attack. With more and more sand flying about, Scyther was forced to retreat again and again.

Scyther could only retreat to its original position and shake off all the sand on its body.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, A Xiang said to Sandshrew, "Sandshrew, use Defense Curl."

In the brief moment it took Scyther to retreat and shake off the sand, Sandshrew used Defense Curl once more.

Sandshrew's defense was now extremely formidable.

"Scyther, use Vacuum Wave."

A Xiang felt it was time to attack and ordered Sandshrew, "Sandshrew, use Rollout."

Scyther beat its wings and raised its scythes, which became covered in white light.

Sandshrew curled into a ball and rolled toward Scyther.

The moves of the two Pokémon collided fiercely.

The result, however, was beyond the spectators' expectations. When the two clashed, Sandshrew had actually come out worse.

Both Pokémon retreated some distance.

But Scyther had only taken one step back, while Sandshrew had retreated several steps.

"What?"

A Xiang was shocked. His Sandshrew's defense had already become excellent after using Defense Curl twice, so why had it still been knocked back?

Seizing the chance, Eichi ordered Scyther, "Scyther, use Leer."

Scyther's already intimidating gaze instantly became even sharper.

The moment Sandshrew met Scyther's eyes, fear filled its heart, and its defense rapidly dropped.

Eichi immediately gave another order. "Scyther, use Vacuum Wave again."

A Xiang anxiously said, "Sandshrew, use Rollout again. Come on, you can't lose!"

Hearing this, Sandshrew nodded firmly, curled into a ball, and rolled toward Scyther.

The two Pokémon collided once more. This time, Scyther's Vacuum Wave struck Sandshrew's body in exactly the same way.

But the result was different. Sandshrew's entire body was sent flying by Scyther.

It fell in front of A Xiang, unable to continue battling.

Having won, Scyther crossed its two scythes and clapped them together before raising them high.

Eichi shook his head. "When did this guy learn that victory pose?"

"You did very well."

A Xiang took out a Poké Ball and recalled Sandshrew.

He then walked up to Eichi and said, "I lost. Your Scyther is really strong."

Eichi said, "Your Sandshrew wasn't bad either."

A Xiang continued, "I'll continue traveling from here on. I hope to battle you again someday."

Eichi said, "Good luck."

Then A Xiang left the backyard to find Nurse Joy for treatment.

During Eichi and A Xiang's battle, many spectators had already gathered around them.

As soon as A Xiang left, someone stepped forward and asked, "Can I battle your Scyther?"

The one who asked was a boy in a short-sleeved shirt. Seeing that Scyther's fighting spirit was still high, Eichi agreed. "Sure."

The short-sleeved boy said, "Go, Magby!"

A red Pokémon with a pair of yellow eyes, flame-shaped antennae on its head, and droplet-shaped objects hanging beneath both sides of its mouth appeared on the ground.

The moment Magby appeared, the temperature around them rose by several degrees.

Magby, the Magma Pokémon

Type: Fire

Abilities: Magma Armor, Flame Body

Hidden Ability: Weak Armor

Eichi said, "Fire-type? It has the type advantage over Scyther, but that won't do much."

Eichi activated Bug King Eye. This Magby had ordinary aptitude and beginner-level strength.

Were they trying to rely on type advantage to beat me?

The short-sleeved boy commanded Magby, "Magby, use Ember."

A small cluster of sparks shot out of Magby's mouth.

Eichi said, "Scyther, use Agility to dodge."

Just as Ember was about to strike, Scyther turned into an afterimage.

Eichi then directly said, "Scyther, use Wing Attack. Finish it."

Scyther's wings glowed white as it charged at Magby.

Magby was too slow to dodge. The short-sleeved boy had Magby use Ember again, hoping to stop Scyther.

Scyther easily dodged it and struck Magby directly.

With a cry of pain, it lost its ability to battle.

The short-sleeved boy looked utterly unable to believe that he had lost—and so quickly at that.

Yet he had no choice but to accept the fact that he had lost.

After winning, Eichi was just about to recall Scyther when another boy with a crew cut stepped forward.

The crew-cut boy said, "I want to battle you too. Come out, Beedrill."

Before Eichi could even agree, he released his own Pokémon.

Eichi had originally wanted to refuse, but when he saw that the opponent had released a Beedrill, he seemed to think of something and agreed.

When Scyther saw that its opponent this time was a Beedrill, it turned to glance at the Poké Ball containing Eichi's Beedrill at his waist.

Then it became excited again. From the way it looked, one would have thought it had encountered a powerful foe.

Scyther had been with Beedrill since birth. After witnessing how powerful Beedrill was, it had assumed that all Beedrill were strong.

It was probably going to be disappointed. Eichi had checked with Bug King Eye—this Beedrill had ordinary aptitude and beginner-level Energy Level.

Then, during the battle, the opponent's Beedrill was instantly defeated. Scyther was left rather stunned. So weak!

Sure enough, Older Brother Beedrill was simply too strong. Scyther admired Beedrill even more after that.
