Ch. 41The Second Pokémon

Eichi had a Pokémon Egg incubated at the Beautiful Nursery, then trained Beedrill with three TMs while waiting for it to hatch. The Egg hatched into a Scyther that immediately bonded with Eichi and joined his growing Pokémon family.

  • Eichi asked Aunt Keiko to incubate the Egg he said a Heracross had given him, and she estimated it would hatch in two days.
  • Eichi told Amelie and Aunt Keiko how he had received the Egg, leaving both women astonished by his luck.
  • Eichi taught Beedrill Double Team, Brick Break, and Hidden Power, then tested the moves in the Small Woods and discovered Beedrill's Hidden Power was Electric-type.
  • On the third day, Eichi returned to the Beautiful Nursery as the Egg hatched into a Scyther that leapt into his arms.
  • Eichi introduced Scyther to Beedrill, let Amelie and Aunt Keiko hold the newborn Pokémon, and listened as Aunt Keiko explained Scyther training.

Ch. 42The Little Scyther in Flight

Eichi watched Baby Scyther admire Beedrill's training and prepared her to begin training the next day. Baby Scyther completed her first flight workout, showed Eichi the four moves she knew, and he decided to keep her training gentle for now.

  • Eichi let Baby Scyther watch Beedrill train, and she eagerly anticipated becoming strong enough to train herself.
  • Eichi fed Baby Scyther MooMoo Milk and honey, massaged her, and infused her and Beedrill with Bug Force before they slept.
  • Baby Scyther began training by flying laps with Beedrill, but she collapsed after fifteen laps, so Beedrill caught her and Eichi restored her stamina.
  • Eichi asked Baby Scyther to show her moves, and she demonstrated Vacuum Wave, Quick Attack, Leer, and Focus Energy.
  • Eichi praised Baby Scyther and decided to keep her training relaxed while she was still young.

Ch. 43Training and Learning

Eichi drafted a training plan for Baby Scyther and studied the extensive knowledge required to become a Basic Breeder. After studying Amelie's notes until late at night, he went to bed.

  • Eichi let Baby Scyther practice freely while Beedrill followed its usual training routine.
  • Eichi planned training for Baby Scyther's Vacuum Wave and Quick Attack, while deciding Leer did not need practice.
  • Eichi considered how his growing Bug Force and improving physical fitness might eventually let him fight Pokémon hand-to-hand.
  • Eichi studied Breeding Knowledge, including Pokémon diets, massages, breeding, hatching, and grooming.
  • Eichi read Amelie's detailed notes in the Pokémon encyclopedia and learned how much breeders needed to know about each Pokémon's health and care.
  • Eichi studied until around eleven and then went to bed.

Ch. 44The Resolve to Grow Stronger

Eichi trained Baby Scyther and Beedrill in the Small Woods, pushing them to improve their skills and explaining why they needed to grow stronger. After Beedrill reached proficient mastery of Brick Break, Eichi took both Pokémon home, unaware that a shadow had appeared near the training clearing.

  • Eichi made Baby Scyther complete flying laps with Beedrill and trained it in Vacuum Wave.
  • Eichi had Beedrill practice Brick Break repeatedly while Baby Scyther watched and trained harder.
  • Eichi explained to Baby Scyther that they would need to train relentlessly to face strong opponents.
  • Beedrill pushed through exhaustion and raised its Brick Break mastery to proficient.
  • Eichi took Baby Scyther and Beedrill home, and a dark shadow appeared in a tree after he left.

Ch. 45Preparing to Set Out

Eichi prepared to leave on a journey, said goodbye to friends, and gathered supplies for the trip. After his father urged him to stay safe, Eichi spent the night with Beedrill and Scyther, looking ahead to the battles they might face.

  • Scyther completed its training, reached the peak of the novice level, and learned Pursuit, False Swipe, and Agility, while Beedrill brought its moves to mastery and learned three new TMs.
  • Eichi visited the Beedrill colony to say goodbye and then asked Amelie for travel advice at Beautiful Nursery.
  • Eichi said goodbye to Aunt Keiko and bought camping gear, Berries, and three months of Pokéblocks at Lianfang Department Store.
  • Eichi's father, Yoshino, prepared a farewell dinner and asked Beedrill and Scyther to protect Eichi on his journey.
  • Eichi took Beedrill and Scyther to a hillside, told them they would face other Trainers, and encouraged them to become powerful.

Ch. 46Departure

Eichi left home to travel through Viridian Forest toward Pewter City, hoping to explore new places and challenge Gyms. As he continued into the forest, Heracross appeared and challenged him to a battle.

  • Eichi greeted the Bug Catchers in Viridian Forest, promised to tell them stories when he returned, and shared Pokémon food with friendly Bug-type Pokémon.
  • Eichi released Beedrill and Scyther for a break, cooked them lunch, and rested before continuing through the forest.
  • As Eichi reached a sign marking the edge of Tokiwa City, Beedrill emerged from its Poké Ball and watched Heracross warily.
  • Heracross pointed at Scyther's Poké Ball and challenged Eichi to a battle.

Ch. 47Scyther vs. Heracross

Eichi watched Scyther battle Heracross, who tested Scyther by holding back before defeating it with a single strike. After Eichi healed and comforted Scyther, he shared dinner and a night’s rest with a group of hungry Pokémon.

  • Eichi released Scyther to fight Heracross, and Scyther’s Leer had no effect before its Quick Attack and Vacuum Wave were blocked.
  • Heracross charged with Horn Attack and fired Bullet Seed, injuring Scyther and slowing it down.
  • Scyther used boosted Quick Attacks, Wing Attack, and Vacuum Wave to land several hits, while Heracross allowed the attacks to connect.
  • Heracross dodged Scyther’s next Vacuum Wave, struck it down, then praised Scyther and flew away; Eichi realized Heracross had been testing it and holding back.
  • Eichi healed Scyther with his Bug Force and encouraged it to train, then cooked soup as night fell.
  • Hungry Pokémon gathered around Eichi, who shared Pokémon food and soup with them before everyone slept together by the fire.

Ch. 48Rookie Trainer

After reaching a Pokémon Center in Viridian Forest, Eichi arranged a battle with A Xiang to help Scyther build confidence. The chapter ended as A Xiang sent out Sandshrew in the Center’s backyard.

  • A Xiang sent out Sandshrew as the battle began.

Ch. 49Scyther vs. Sandshrew

Eichi’s Scyther defeated A Xiang’s Sandshrew and then won battles against a Magby and a Beedrill. Scyther was surprised by how weak the opposing Beedrill was and admired Eichi’s Beedrill even more.

  • A Xiang’s Sandshrew used Defense Curl and Sand Attack to hinder Scyther, but Scyther weakened its defense with Leer and defeated it with Vacuum Wave.
  • After A Xiang recalled Sandshrew and left for treatment, a short-sleeved boy challenged Eichi with Magby.
  • Scyther dodged Magby’s Ember and knocked it out with Wing Attack.
  • A crew-cut boy challenged Eichi with Beedrill before Eichi could refuse.

  • Eichi ate breakfast with Beedrill and Scyther, then headed to Nibi Gym with two other people.
  • Wu Neng introduced himself as the Gym Leader and showed the challengers the Boulder Badge.
  • The first challenger sent out Rattata, but Geodude defeated it with Rock Throw.
  • The challenger sent out Poliwag, whose Water Gun weakened Geodude, but Geodude knocked it out with Tackle.
  • The referee declared the first challenger’s challenge a failure after both Pokémon lost their ability to battle.

Ch. 52Gym Challenge

Challenger Number Two defeated Wu Neng’s Geodude and Onix with Water-types and won the Boulder Badge, while Challenger Number Three failed his Gym challenge. Eichi took his turn and sent out Scyther against Geodude, leaving Brock wondering how Scyther could counter it.

  • Eichi recalled Scyther and sent out Beedrill as Brock and Wu Neng doubted it could defeat Onix.

Ch. 54Beedrill vs. Onix

Eichi’s Beedrill defeated Wu Neng’s Onix in a hard-fought Gym battle, earning Eichi the Boulder Badge. The badly injured Beedrill was recalled after the victory, and Eichi left with the badge.

  • Eichi encouraged Beedrill to face Onix, and Beedrill spread Toxic Spikes across the field while dodging Onix’s Rock Throw.
  • Beedrill increased its Attack with Swords Dance and shattered Onix’s boulders, but Onix trapped it in a Sand Tomb and wore it down with rocks.
  • Wu Neng offered Eichi the badge if he admitted defeat, but Eichi refused and urged Beedrill to keep fighting.

  • After two days on the road, Eichi stopped for the night and sent Beedrill and Scyther to find water and firewood.
  • Yaqi arrived on Corviknight and asked to share Eichi's campsite, and Eichi used Bug King Eye to confirm he was not dangerous.
  • Eichi discovered that Yaqi's Corviknight had Elite-level strength and his Ninetales had Gym Leader-level strength.
  • The aroma of Eichi's cooking drew wild Pokémon, including a Kangaskhan and its Marill, and Eichi fed them all.
