Soul-fragment resurrection safeguards 644 Research into Living Corpse Reincarnation and curse marks provides a means of revival while external soul fragments survive. Revival can still require considerable time after severe injury.
First completed Living Corpse Reincarnation 768 Successfully transfers into a female host. Earlier research into the Reaper Death Seal makes this version of the technique more complete.
Improved Impure World Reincarnation 806 Following the Third Kazekage’s earlier escape from his control, improves the technique and suppresses the summoned Kazekage’s consciousness to prevent another release.
Body Revival and Body Activation techniques acquired 1157 Obtains and verifies Shinnō’s two techniques, which he had sought to further optimize Living Corpse Reincarnation. Their subsequent mastery is not shown in the supplied context.

Background / History

Konoha commander and Hokage candidate

Orochimaru grows up in Konoha and becomes the Third Hokage’s direct disciple. During the Second Ninja World War, Hanzō grants him, Jiraiya, and Tsunade the title of Konoha’s Sannin. When the three encounter Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan as war orphans, Orochimaru proposes killing them to end their suffering, but Jiraiya intervenes 298 301 562.

His wartime record makes him one of Konoha’s leading commanders. His scheme against Blue B, Kumogakure’s previous Eight-Tails jinchūriki, causes Blue B’s death and helps provoke conflict between Kumogakure and Iwagakure. During the Third Ninja World War, he fights Kirigakure in the Land of Waves and later leads Konoha to victory against Sunagakure at Kikyo Pass 63 247 373.

At the height of his prestige, Orochimaru is the leading candidate for Fourth Hokage. Konoha’s leadership recalls him to begin taking over village affairs, and the Hyuga Clan votes to align itself with him. The exposure of his human experimentation damages his candidacy; after losing the election, he congratulates Minato and withdraws from public life to concentrate on research 247 251.

Partnership with Soji and defection

Soji first seeks out Orochimaru to trade for research materials. Their agreement exchanges a pair of Byakugan and potential Hyuga intelligence for continuing research updates. Orochimaru conceals both the partnership and his transplanted eyes from Danzo and Konoha’s leadership 80 81 127.

After his electoral defeat, Orochimaru becomes increasingly unscrupulous about obtaining experimental subjects. Danzo initially helps seize villagers, but Orochimaru begins doing so independently. He concludes that Konoha’s restrictions leave him insufficient freedom to pursue his work, despite his attachment to the village 251 298.

Before leaving, he invites Soji to accompany him and gives him scrolls containing his latest cell and gene research. Soji supplies funds and a Land of Fire map. When the Third Hokage discovers his experimental base, Orochimaru fights his way out and escapes the village; subsequent Anbu and Root efforts fail to capture him. Jiraiya requests responsibility for pursuing him 298 300 301.

Otogakure and Akatsuki

Following his defection, Orochimaru establishes Otogakure and a network of laboratories in the Land of Sound, working with the Fuma Clan. Soji maintains contact with him and eventually asks him to research a way to undo the Reaper Death Seal 369 372.

Pain forces Orochimaru into an encounter by destroying five experimental bases. Orochimaru immediately covets the Rinnegan, attacks, and is defeated by a single Shinra Tensei. He joins Akatsuki both to preserve his remaining facilities and to await another opportunity to steal the eyes 562.

Initially partnered with Sasori, Orochimaru is reassigned to Shisui because of his poor relationship with Sasori. Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan gives him a new reason to remain in the organization. He uses their mission to assassinate the Land of Fire’s daimyō as an opportunity to ambush Shisui, but the attempt fails; Soji saves him from the resulting confrontation 629 630 642 643 644.

Flight and Minato’s return

After defecting from Akatsuki, Orochimaru hides in the Land of Wind and secretly cooperates with Fourth Kazekage Rasa. He arranges for Kabuto to return to Konoha through Soji and gather intelligence on the Uchiha Clan 680.

Nagato’s destruction of his facilities and Sasori’s persistent pursuit eventually push him toward overseas laboratories. On an isolated island, he completes his first Living Corpse Reincarnation, then informs Soji that he is ready to work on breaking the Reaper Death Seal 768.

At Uzushio’s ruins, Orochimaru unexpectedly encounters Nagato and Konan. His renewed attempt to steal the Rinnegan ends with Nagato restraining him using Adamantine Sealing Chains and black rods. Soji intervenes, and the two later retrieve the genuine Death God Mask and relocate to Orochimaru’s underground laboratory in the Land of Fire 799 800 808 813.

Orochimaru wears the mask, controls the Death God, and opens its stomach to release the sealed souls. He receives the same wound and must urgently change bodies afterward. His cooperation enables Minato’s true return and earns him greater tolerance from Konoha 813 814 1076 1083.

Attempts to obtain Uchiha vessels

Orochimaru returns to Konoha disguised as Otogakure’s team leader during the joint Chunin Exams. Using intelligence supplied by Kabuto, he targets Itachi as his next vessel and prepares to exploit Itachi’s concern for Sasuke 877 891.

He has a giant snake swallow the Central Tower and traps Itachi inside a barrier. Fighting alongside Ohm, he survives Itachi’s attacks through body replacement and later deploys the reanimated First Hokage, Second Hokage, and Third Kazekage. Despite these preparations, the operation ends in a frustrated retreat 901 902 906 918 932 935.

Orochimaru also implants Sasuke with the Heavenly Curse Mark and a fragment of his soul. The Uchiha Clan helps Sasuke suppress that consciousness while retaining the mark’s power. When Orochimaru attempts to exploit Sasuke’s chakra exhaustion, Sasuke and Chiyo jointly destroy over ninety percent of the fragment; its remaining head retreats deeper into Sasuke’s consciousness 1006 1007 1008.

Opposition to Akatsuki and return to Konoha

Acting on intelligence from Soji, Orochimaru travels to Takigakure with Ohm, Jugo, and Guren to interfere with Akatsuki’s tailed-beast operation. He also draws Shinnō into the conflict to secure techniques useful to his immortality research 1083 1084.

His intervention saves Kakashi and Sakura, although his stated objective is to obstruct Akatsuki rather than rescue them. He confronts Sasori with support from Guren, Ohm, and Manda, turning years of pursuit into an opportunity for retaliation 1125 1126 1127 1129 1130.

Orochimaru later obtains Shinnō’s Body Revival and Body Activation techniques and takes custody of Fū, the Seven-Tails jinchūriki, for research. His training improves her control enough to remain conscious during Half-Tailed Beast Transformation, though she does not become a Perfect Jinchūriki 1157 1438.

When Akatsuki destroys Konoha, Orochimaru abandons his experiments and returns with Ohm, Guren, and Shihō. He offers intelligence on Akatsuki and asks Minato about Soji’s whereabouts. He subsequently investigates whether Mizuki Ember is actually his disciple, but Soji diverts his suspicions with an explanation involving their supposed friendship and the Blood Crystals 1519 1520 1526.

Appearance

  • Usual appearance: Pale face, long black hair, golden vertical pupils, purple eyeshadow extending toward the sides of his nose, and blue-green magatama-shaped earrings 370.
  • Distinctive mannerisms: Extends a long tongue to lick his lips; speaks in a hoarse voice that young Minato finds intensely grating 20.
  • First reincarnated host: A pale, long-haired woman wearing a light yellow robe and a large rope knot around her waist. He can conceal this host beneath his familiar appearance 768 901.
  • True body: A White Phosphorus Snake, also shown emerging as a Little White Snake before transforming back into human form 814 906.
  • Research implants: One Byakugan on his back and another in his left palm 127.

Personality

Orochimaru prioritizes knowledge, immortality, and access to rare abilities. He is patient and calculating when gathering intelligence or arranging an ambush, but the prospect of acquiring the Rinnegan or Mangekyō Sharingan can override his caution. Powerful resistance often increases his interest in a prospective vessel rather than discouraging him 562 680 901 918.

He treats useful people with considerable latitude and can inspire willing devotion, as demonstrated by Kabuto. His laboratories are nevertheless governed by fear: subordinates dread becoming experimental material when they prove useless or interrupt his work. With Soji, he shows a lighter side, teasing him and taking pride in his achievements 297 562 680 813 890.

His feelings toward Konoha combine attachment, resentment, and possessiveness. He considers destroying the village but never launches the Konoha Crush Plan in this timeline. When Akatsuki destroys it instead, his lingering resentment fades and he decides to return. Even his research ambitions can yield to personal ties: he refrains from directly studying Naruto because of his relationship with Minato 1438 1519 1520.

Abilities & Skills

Scientific research

  • Cell and genetic research: Participates in Konoha’s secret First Hokage cell program and identifies a child capable of Wood Release 81 249.
  • Byakugan-assisted experimentation: Uses the eye in his palm to overcome several research bottlenecks, prompting the Third Hokage to entrust him with additional projects 127.
  • Brain examination: Detects Sasori’s memory-sealing needle in Kabuto’s brain and largely neutralizes its effects 680.
  • Chakra Armor development: Produces armor for Soji and his daughter, combining Soji’s supplied technology with his own research 249 297.
  • Advanced experiments: Studies Blood Crystals and a White Zetsu corpse supplied by Soji. His Clone Number One experiment later displays traits of three Sage Modes 1083 1445.

Living Corpse Reincarnation

  • Transfers into replacement bodies; his first completed transfer uses an unknown female host 768.
  • Relies on splitting the soul without inflicting excessive damage on the user 1209.
  • Preserves fragments in Heavenly Curse Mark recipients as possible resurrection points 1007.
  • Does not prevent injury or lengthy recovery. Destroying his principal body can leave him awaiting revival 644 906.
  • Reduces his resistance to genjutsu; even with transplanted Byakugan, his resistance is described as only average 1209.
  • Although initially unwilling to pass on this core technique, he later guides Soji in learning it 1208 1209.

Heavenly and Earth Curse Marks

  • Develops curse marks through research into Jugo’s power 768 1445.
  • Both marks use Natural Energy, sharing their underlying principle with Sage Mode 1445.
  • The Heavenly Curse Mark provides recipients with enhanced combat power while carrying Orochimaru’s soul fragment; Jugo is explicitly exempt from this implantation pattern 768 1007.
  • Can allow Orochimaru to communicate with and influence a marked target, especially when the target’s suppressing chakra falls below a critical level 1006 1007.
  • Does not guarantee control: Sasuke retains the enhancement while suppressing and severely damaging the implanted fragment 1008.

Snake techniques and summons

  • Shadow Snake Limbs: Binds targets with a giant snake while smaller venomous snakes attack their limbs 642.
  • Shadow Many Snake Hands: Launches multiple venomous snakes from his arm or sleeve; his signature snake techniques generally require no hand seals 901 1441.
  • Ryūchi Cave summons: Uses snakes for reconnaissance, communication, and combat 20 80 680.
  • Giant snake: Swallows the Chunin Exam Central Tower and creates a restrictive, fleshy battlefield around Itachi 901 902.
  • Manda: Provides large-scale combat support, though the summon remains vulnerable as a flesh-and-blood creature 1130.

Modified body and Body Replacement Technique

  • Stretches his torso and bends around defenses at unnatural angles 902 1127.
  • Reassembles his body through masses of Little White Snakes 1127.
  • Sheds a damaged body and emerges in an uninjured replacement, surviving a broken neck and severe burns 643 902.
  • Can discard a host and escape as his snake true body 906.
  • Shedding his body leaves behind approximately seventy to eighty percent of Tsukuyomi’s damage, but does not eliminate the remaining mental injury 906.
  • Possesses substantial poison resistance, reducing the effectiveness of Sasori’s usual poison tactics 1126.

Impure World Reincarnation

  • Summons the dead as controlled combatants, including Hashirama Senju, Tobirama Senju, and the Third Kazekage 906.
  • Initially fails to prevent the Third Kazekage from releasing the technique through sheer willpower 697.
  • Improves control by stripping the summoned subject of personal consciousness 806.
  • Uses reanimated shinobi alongside living subordinates to overwhelm opponents through coordinated attacks 907 917 918.
  • His version is explicitly superior to Sasori’s later version 1530.

Byakugan

  • Gains improved combat awareness from the eye implanted on his back and close-range observation for research from the eye in his palm 127.
  • Uses the palm-mounted eye to escape one of Shisui’s genjutsu 643.
  • The implants impose almost no burden after adaptation, but do not make him immune to stronger illusions 127 643 1209.

Sealing knowledge and defensive techniques

  • Researches the Reaper Death Seal after Soji explains its soul-sealing mechanism 372.
  • Uses the genuine Death God Mask to control the Death God and release the souls in its stomach, receiving the same abdominal wound in return 813.
  • Prepares a spare reincarnation body to survive the ritual’s consequences 813 814.
  • Summons Three-Layered Rashomon to block Sasori’s boomerang attack 1129.

Command and intelligence

  • Commands major wartime fronts and devises operations with consequences extending beyond the immediate battlefield 247 373.
  • Maintains informants in Konoha and the Land of Fire, although many are purged or sever ties after his defection 630 639.
  • Coordinates close-range sword attacks with Guren’s Crystal Release and Ohm’s Wood Release support 1126.
  • Abandons learning Ryūchi Cave’s sage arts after weighing the risks, pursuing curse-mark research as a safer route to Natural Energy instead 1445.
