Background
Obito was a Konoha shinobi and a teammate of Kakashi Hatake and Rin Nohara under Minato Namikaze. His parents, both Uchiha Chūnin, died during the Third Ninja World War; his grandmother died soon after hearing of Obito’s presumed death at Kannabi Bridge. With no close blood relatives remaining, he treasured Kakashi and Rin as his family. 260 1455
After being crushed and presumed dead, Obito entrusted his Two-Tomoe Sharingan to Kakashi. Konoha recognized the act as the final wish of a village hero and allowed Kakashi to retain the eye. 251
Madara Uchiha rescued the injured Obito and kept him in a hidden cavern. Though Madara offered him the Moon Eye Plan as a path to world peace, Obito initially rejected it, caring only about returning to Konoha and rejoining Kakashi and Rin. 260 Madara and White Zetsu instead arranged circumstances that drove Obito into despair, after which he awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan and began acting under Madara’s identity. Madara also placed a Curse Mark on Obito’s heart and assigned Black Zetsu to monitor him. 269 331
As the masked “Madara Uchiha,” Obito attacked Konoha during the Nine-Tails Night, interfered in the Night of the Coup, and manipulated Fourth Mizukage Karatachi Yagura, worsening Kirigakure’s Bloody Mist era. 1344 1564 He later joined Nagato, Konan, and Zetsu as part of Akatsuki’s original core, while privately distrusting both Nagato and Zetsu. 460
Obito reclaimed his Sharingan from Kakashi to complete Dual Kamui, seeking enough power to contend with Nagato and to ensure that nobody could interfere with his Kamui Dimension. 1338 1344 His reunion with the revived Rin changed his priorities: learning that Madara had orchestrated the circumstances of Rin’s death and implanted a Curse Mark in her heart turned Obito’s hatred toward Madara himself. 1455 1460 1461
During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Obito became the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki to pursue revenge against Madara. His obsession preserved his Six Paths form, but he steadily lost control to the Ten-Tails’ consciousness. 1662 1665 When Madara threatened Rin, Obito’s instinct to protect her broke through Madara’s control; he expelled the Ten-Tails rather than endanger her. 1677 He later apologized to Rin, Kakashi, and Minato, then aided the Allied Forces against Madara. 1678 1745
Appearance
Obito commonly conceals himself behind a spiral-patterned mask while posing as Madara Uchiha. His face was permanently damaged by the rockfall that nearly killed him.
- Half of his face is heavily disfigured. 723 1455
- Wears a spiral-patterned mask during much of his time as Tobi/Madara.
- Later wears a white mask and carries a giant gunbai during the Fourth Great Ninja War. 1586
- Often wears Akatsuki’s black cloak patterned with red clouds. 1490
- Possesses matching Mangekyō Sharingan with a three-bladed shuriken pattern. 1343
Personality
Before his corruption, Obito was compassionate, deeply loyal to his comrades, and desperate to return to Konoha despite Madara’s pressure. His greatest emotional vulnerability was Rin; danger to either Rin or Kakashi could override his fear, caution, and even Madara’s manipulation. 260 265
As “Madara,” he became manipulative, prideful, and willing to treat villages and people as pieces in his plans. He repeatedly framed mass harm as the price of achieving his ideal world, even while his anger at Kakashi showed that he had never truly severed his attachment to his past. 569 1344 1345
Rin’s return exposes the insecure, awkward side of Obito that remained beneath the mask. He fears that his disfigurement will disgust her, becomes visibly jealous when she praises Kakashi, and gradually stops denying that he is Obito Uchiha. 1455 1459 1658
Abilities & Skills
Mangekyō Sharingan and Kamui
Obito’s signature dōjutsu is Kamui, a space-time ability linked to his personal dimension. His right eye specializes in mobility and defense, while the eye formerly held by Kakashi provides destructive spatial distortion. 1343
- Can make parts of his body intangible by shifting them into the Kamui Dimension.
- Can teleport himself and transport targets into the Kamui Dimension.
- The offensive eye can warp and sever targets through spatial distortion. 1343
- Dual Kamui greatly increases his intangibility, absorption, and spatial-transfer speed. 1424 1425
- Cannot attack and remain intangible at the same time. 1504
- As a Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, he loses intangibility because his Mangekyō cannot phase a Six Paths-level body; teleportation and offensive Kamui remain functional. 1666
Susanoo
After regaining both Mangekyō Sharingan, Obito can manifest a sky-blue Susanoo.
- Can form skeletal and larger-stage Susanoo constructs. 1424 1446
- His third-stage Susanoo wields an enlarged Chain Scythe. 1446
- Susanoo provides substantial offensive and defensive power but can be outmaneuvered by faster opponents. 1445 1448
Six Paths Power
As the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, Obito achieved a Six Paths-level life form.
- Manifested nine Truth-Seeking Orbs. 1663
- Could fly and use Truth-Seeking Orbs defensively. 1673 1677
- Empowered Kamui with Six Paths-level output, enough to instantly destroy Madara’s third-stage Susanoo. 1672
- His use of ninjutsu and dōjutsu accelerated the Ten-Tails’ attempt to consume his consciousness. 1672 1673
- After expelling the Ten-Tails, he retains only a limited reserve of Six Paths power. 1681
Wood Release and Fire Release
Obito inherited and mastered techniques left behind by Madara, including Wood Release and advanced Fire Release. 331
- Wood Release — Impaling/Insert Technique — Forms branches or wooden spikes for close-range impalement. 268 1340
- Fire Style — Flower Phoenix Fire Technique — Launches successive flame projectiles. 1340
- Fire Style — Violent Wind Dance — Combines Fire Release with Kamui’s spatial distortion to produce spiral flames. 1505
- Uchiha Flame Formation — Raises a powerful flame barrier capable of dispersing Konan’s paper attacks. 1425
Genjutsu and Other Techniques
- Uses Sharingan genjutsu to control or coerce targets. 1452 1453
- Has used Izanagi to survive death, reviving roughly three hours after being crushed by sea pressure at the cost of a Sharingan’s sight. 723
- Can create Kamui-infused projectiles, including a Shadow Windmill Shuriken. 1661
- Uses Chakra Receivers, including one imbued with Kamui power. 1448
Equipment
- Spiral-patterned mask — Conceals his identity while he acts as Tobi or Madara Uchiha. 460 1455
- White mask — Worn during the Fourth Great Ninja War. 1586
- Chain Scythe — Used in battle with Kakashi and replicated as Susanoo’s weapon. 1340 1446
- Gunbai — Carried during the Fourth Great Ninja War. 1586
- Amenonuhoko — Wielded while in his Ten-Tails Jinchūriki state; later combined with Kamui as a void-piercing attack. 1245 1674
- Chakra Receivers — Used to restrain opponents and as Kamui-linked traps. 1448 1455
Relationships
- Rin Nohara — The person Obito values above all else. Her apparent death drove his descent, while her resurrection and acceptance helped restore his identity and redirect his hatred toward Madara. 1455 1460 1677
- Kakashi Hatake — Former best friend and recipient of Obito’s Sharingan. Obito resents Kakashi over Rin’s death, yet repeatedly hesitates to kill him and later apologizes to him. 1343 1345 1678
- Minato Namikaze — Former mentor figure. Obito blames Minato for arriving too late for his students, but Minato forgives him after learning the truth. 1504 1662 1679
- Madara Uchiha — Rescuer, manipulator, and eventual primary target of Obito’s revenge. Madara used Obito as a pawn, implanted the Curse Mark controlling him, and orchestrated Rin’s tragedy. 331 1460 1665
- Black and White Zetsu — Madara’s agents and Obito’s uneasy collaborators. Obito uses them for intelligence but knows they monitor him on Madara’s behalf. 460 484
- Nagato — Akatsuki counterpart and rival. Their alliance is mutually useful but distrustful; Obito later challenges him for leadership after obtaining Dual Kamui. 460 1425 1426
- Konan — Nagato’s protector and an opponent during Obito’s attempt to take control of Akatsuki. 1425 1426
- Hyuga Soji / Mizuki Ember — A recurring adversary who repeatedly defeats or frustrates Obito. Obito later spares Neji’s group because he owes Soji a favor. 268 723 1490
- Sasuke Uchiha — An Uchiha rival whom Obito initially provokes and considers taking the eyes of; he later spares Sasuke while focusing on revenge against Madara. 1586 1658
Story Role / Major Arcs
