Background

In his youth, Chiriku served among the Twelve Guardian Ninja, whose duties included secretly protecting the Land of Fire’s daimyo. A civil war among the twelve left only Chiriku and Asuma alive. Asuma returned to Konoha, while Chiriku went back to the Fire Temple and became its abbot 3 9.

Chiriku accepted Prince Yuan Chuan—Li Chuan’s identity in the Naruto World—as an apprentice despite initially doubting that a noble would endure ninja training. After seeing Li Chuan’s aptitude and relentless practice, he recognized him as a direct disciple and devised a curriculum covering ninjutsu, chakra control, combat, and practical ninja knowledge 4 6 9.

Appearance

Chiriku is described as a bald monk in his thirties who wears a kasaya 3.

Abilities & Skills

Sage Art and Fire Temple techniques

• Sage Art chakra — Chiriku teaches the Fire Temple’s refinement method, which incorporates a small amount of natural energy. It can gradually improve physical condition, but chakra refinement is slower than with ordinary chakra 4.
• Raijin – Thousand-Armed Killing — Produces a defensive Thousand-Armed Kannon statue. Chiriku expends nearly all his remaining chakra using it against Kakuzu’s three-element attack, but the statue is destroyed 301.
• Acala — An offensive form that Chiriku uses against Kakuzu before switching to Thousand-Armed Kannon for defense 300.
• Technique limitation — Chiriku must maintain a specific hand-seal posture while using the statue techniques, leaving his body unable to move 300 301.

Teaching

• Chiriku teaches hand seals and the Three Body Techniques, then expands Li Chuan’s training to include combat, chakra control, ninja tools, tactics, and cipher interpretation 5 6 7 9.
• He shares advanced Fire Temple knowledge with Li Chuan, including its secret ninjutsu, chakra nature transformation, and barrier construction 51.

Relationships

• Li Chuan / Chuan — His direct disciple. Chiriku grows proud of Li Chuan’s progress; Li Chuan later intervenes to save him from Kakuzu 6 8 301.
• Sora — A lay disciple whom Chiriku brought to the temple and cares for like his own child. Chiriku worries about the unexplained power inside Sora 3 302.
• Asuma — Fellow survivor of the Twelve Guardian Ninja. Asuma taught Chiriku Konoha ninja knowledge, while Chiriku shared Fire Temple secret ninjutsu with him 9.
• Kakuzu — Attacks the Fire Temple to collect the bounty on Chiriku. Chiriku holds him off but cannot withstand his composite ninjutsu without Li Chuan’s intervention 297 300 301.

Story Role

• Fire Temple apprenticeship — Chiriku becomes Li Chuan’s first master in the Naruto World and provides the foundation of his ninja training 4 9.
• Fire Temple crisis — After Kakuzu breaks through the temple’s defenses, Chiriku fights him with Acala and Raijin – Thousand-Armed Killing. Li Chuan arrives before Kakuzu’s attack can kill him; Chiriku survives with his chakra nearly depleted 300 301 302.
