Background / History
Tony is kidnapped in Afghanistan by Lazar Hamidmi's terrorist group after Obadiah Stane arranges for his death. Held alongside Yinsen, he works on an Arc Reactor while imprisoned and gradually realizes that Stark Industries weapons have harmed innocent people. When Li Chuan infiltrates the base disguised as Obadiah, Tony initially believes his longtime associate has betrayed him. 29
Li Chuan ultimately rescues Tony and Yinsen/Dr. Ethan in exchange for Tony's future assistance to Li Group, including business support and improvements to its production machinery. After returning to New York, Tony shuts down Stark Industries' weapons-manufacturing division and establishes support for families affected by war. He entrusts company operations to Pepper Potts so he can focus on completing the armor he began developing in captivity. 30 34
Tony becomes Iron Man and begins targeting terrorists internationally. He refuses Nick Fury's invitation to join the Avengers Initiative, resents S.H.I.E.L.D.'s attempts to control him, and publicly reveals his identity as Iron Man despite Fury's warnings. 52 56 57
Personality
Tony is brilliant, confident, impulsive, and intensely independent. He rejects attempts by governments or S.H.I.E.L.D. to dictate how he uses his technology, openly refusing to surrender his armor designs at a congressional hearing. 56 80
His captivity gives him a stronger sense of responsibility for the consequences of his weapons. Although still sharp-tongued, flirtatious, and prone to showing off, he chooses to use Iron Man to protect civilians and confront threats personally. 34 57
He is capable of restraint and growth. During the confrontation over Bucky Barnes, Tony ultimately chooses not to kill him and allows him the opportunity to atone. 281
