History

Lu Li first encounters Prison Demon while using the Resonance Method to descend into his own soul. He reaches a purple-black hell dominated by magma, flames, and tormented souls, where a massive cage seals a pitch-black figure beneath countless chains. The entity answers Lu Li’s request for its name only with a roar filled with resentment, madness, and loneliness, violently expelling him from the soul-space. 23

After repeated visits to that inner hell, Lu Li rejects the idea that he must be given the Zanpakutō’s name. He chooses it himself: Prison Demon. During his duel with Retsu Unohana, he invokes its release command—“Shatter your chains, Prison Demon”—and awakens its Shikai. 31

Prison Demon grows by consuming soul power from enemies Lu Li kills. Its progression initially stalls at Epic because Lu Li has not achieved Bankai; once he reaches an agreement with his own heart and obtains Bankai, the weapon breaks through into Dark Gold grade. 371

The imprisoned entity remains dangerous even after Shikai and Bankai are established. When it communicates with Lu Li for the first time, its incomprehensible speech nearly shatters Lu Li’s soul-body, and Lu Li subsequently enters a destructive rampage that injures Aizen. 319

Later soul-space exploration reveals that the prison cage has expanded enormously, suggesting that the force inside is pressing outward against its seal. Its later communication is purposeful rather than animalistic. Though initially hostile and bound, the Jet-Black Demon God agrees to cooperate when Lu Li threatens to keep it sealed, demonstrating self-interest and a willingness to compromise when confinement is the alternative. 859
